It's 15 years since Shapeshifters' 'Lola's Theme' and Rachel Stevens' 'Some Girls' occupied the Top 2.

'Lola's Theme' was the first single from house duo Shapeshifters, compromising of DJs Simon Marlin and Max Reich, with featured vocals from Cookie. Its production takes inspiration from old disco records and includes a sample of Johnnie Taylor's 'What About My Love'.

'Some Girls' was the lead for the re-release of Rachel Stevens' debut album and was chosen as the official Sports Relief single. It was written by Richard X and Hannah Robinson with Girls Aloud intended as the performers. Music manager Simon Fuller requested that the song be given to either of his acts, Geri Halliwell or Rachel Stevens. Legend has it that Geri locked herself in her car in protest when she was denied the song!

Both were tipped for #1, however the Sports Relief status of 'Some Girls' wasn't enough to overcome the strong radio play of 'Lola's Theme', with the latter debuting 9k higher on 52k. Total sales for 'Lola's Theme' now stand at 500k whilst 'Some Girls' remains below 200k.

15 years on, which is your favourite?

Both songs are really good but I've plumped for 'Lola's Theme' as that is one of the absolute best noughties dance songs for me, a summer playlist essential

The quality of 'Some Girls' needs to be sorted out on YouTube  I had no idea that Girls Aloud were intended as the performers :o that could've been quite a moment. I did know about the Geri Halliwell thing though, I did a double-take when reading that on Wikipedia back in the day! Iconic.

This is by far the hardest of the polls so far. 'Lola's Theme' is a classic Noughties dance song, so uplifting and absolutely gorgeous in the sunshine. 'Some Girls' was a such a childhood fave, possibly my favourite from Rachel Stevens, and I have strong memories of the video. In the end, I went with 'Some Girls' as I feel nostalgia just edges it.

Poor girl didn't even have her own Vevo page 11 months ago!

Oh wait I had no idea that 'Some Girls' had actually been sorted out on YouTube at last!! Hallelujah, I remember trying to play it on plug a couple of times a few years ago and it was potato quality :') what a revelation this has been *.* about time!

I see! YouTube often does the dirty on noughties pop - I'm sure some Sugababes and Girls Aloud videos finish 30 seconds too early and I remember the 'Biology' video was shifted slightly so poor Nicola was cut out for the most part! :') Although I think that may have been sorted out now.

Same can't be said for So Good alas, like the only song of hers I go back to and it's all backwards on there :'( I think it may have been taken down now.

Anyway, no contest at all - Lola's Theme is an absolute feelgood classic and one of the VERY few number 1s from that year that has aged really well

My beloved Danushka turned down Lola's Theme :(

Lola's Theme by miles

oh the days when Morrissey could get top 10s so easily but First of the gang is a brilliant track, his best of the 00s

best newie in the t40 is Counting Crows - Accidentally in Love, brilliant songs and deserved much much better than low top 40
