August 7, 20195 yr 'Ai Se Eu Te Pego' was Portuguese, not Spanish! [/late] It's really strange that Ella Mai, an artist whose first exposure was as a member of a failed girlgroup on the X Factor, ended up with one huge and another pretty big hit in the US but both were only very middling top 100 hits here and she's still yet to ever go top 40. 'Trip' really deserved better.
August 7, 20195 yr RTF was her first solo hit and was the single before KYD. I *think* Energy was the debut single elsewhere in the world though, so maybe it wasn't a "re-release" and that we just got Energy as the third single? Ah yes. That was it. Such a good remix  It elevated it so much. I just need new Keri :( I genuinely forgot about Keri's songs outside of 'Knock You Down' and the main two Timbaland features! 'Pretty Girl Rock' was a tune as well. She just seems to have disappeared.

I loved Lose Control as well, which was a Stargate production cut from the same cloth as Rude Boy but was soooo good <3
August 7, 20195 yr someone mentioned Rihanna's You Needed me but what about Love on the Brain that was even bigger in the US, top 5 with massive airplay... but didn't even go top 100 in the UK (I think)
August 7, 20195 yr another recent one is Luis Fonsi & Demi Lovato - Echame la Culpa massive #1 in many EU and South American countries, in Spain it was massive but did nothing in the UK despite having Demi
August 7, 20195 yr It's especially interesting when songs smash across Europe and Ireland too (as the UK and Irish charts often tend to share similar hits and peaks) but somehow completely bypass the UK. Gigi d'Agostino could have had at least three hits here with a push - La Passion, L'Amour Toujours and The Riddle, and probably others. Also, one of my favourite ever songs, All I Really Want by Kim Lukas (which I first heard on the radio in Tenerife in early 2000) was big in Canada, which did seem more keen on Eurohits than the US, and smashed in many European countries but was given no UK release despite Kim being British. Yeah, exactly - back in those days (c 2002) the Irish and UK charts were closely aligned and if a European/American hit made the Irish charts, you could always count on it turning up on the UK charts too (especially in the physical sales era), so it was really quite unusual when this did not happen. I agree, Gigi d'Agostino would have had big hits with those three songs - it was strange how they were never pushed in the UK! Definitely strange too how that Kim Lukas record was never pushed in the UK (or Ireland) either despite Kim being from the UK. It's a good song and definitely one of those that would have done well in the charts as it fit in very well with the sounds of the time.
August 7, 20195 yr Aie Si Te Pego flopped here, as did In The Zone the album by Britney. It was one of her biggest across the world. Hollier didn't sell much, but absolutely slayed in Brazil and South America too!! Madonna For A Girl flopped here as well.

I don’t think it flopped it sold over 500,000 copies here. Didn’t it outsell Britney the album what peaked at #4?
August 7, 20195 yr Oh, I've just thought of two more examples: "Break My Stride" by Unique II from 1997. It was a dance-pop cover of Matthew Wilder's 80s song, and got a lot of TV and radio airplay in Ireland. It made no1 in Austria and New Zealand and no2 in Australia according to Wikipedia, and made the top 10 in Ireland (no9, thanks irishcharts.ie!) It never made the UK charts though. It's a nice boppy catchy version - I didn't realise at the time that it was a cover but it still sounds good and brings back memories to me! Another one - "Friends Forever" by Vitamin C. According to Wikipedia, it got to no2 in Australia and no4 over here in Ireland, top 30 in five countries and made it to 38 in the US. It was really big over here in Ireland in the year 2000 - it seemed to be all over the TV and radio and my sister's year used it as their high school graduation song and sung it at their school-leaving ceremony, along with almost pretty much every graduating class in Ireland in the year 2000! It's a really nice song and you've just got to love the classical music sample in it too. It never made the UK charts though I think it was never actually released in the UK. August 7, 20195 yr A lot of Imagine Dragons songs, most notably "Believer." A few Kygo singles, one of them coincidentally also with Imagine Dragons. Some European hits like "Jungle Drum", "I Will Love You Monday (365)", "Everything at Once", "Friends". Every Robin Schulz single after "Prayer In C".
August 7, 20195 yr What a great idea for a thread. I thought about doing a similar thread. Some great examples. Friends forever and is passion would have been massive here. I am always surprised some songs are never pushed here. I've always wondered why? Or even why Ireland get them and we don't. How about daddy dj? Massive euro hit in 2001 Also aicha by outlandish. Big hit in 2003 and thought it had lots of potential here. I also why uk labels don't cover euro songs more. For example no angels had some big pop songs and whilst they were geared to the German market some of their songs could have easily been covered by a UK group. Break my stride by unique ii is one of my fav songs. I still can't believe it wasn't pushed here. In 1997 it would have easily gone top 3 in my opinion
August 7, 20195 yr I guess it's quite rare for a huge US hit to underperform here, unless it's country, but there are a few - Imma Be by Black Eyed Peas (No.55, No.1 in the US), basically everything by the incredible Sarah McLachlan apart from Silence... there’s a million exemples since the 1960s of songs which were huge in the US and did nothing in the Uk... even now with the US charts becoming very hip hop dominated, most of these songs barely make the charts here or anywhere else, except Canada maybe... Just look at any Billboard year end chart from 1985 till 2010 and you’ll find that most of the songs didnt make the UK charts or didnt even go top 40... Edited August 7, 20195 yr by Dark Horse

Love this, the Canon sample is so overused in pop music (C U When U Get There, Go West, All Together Now, that N-Dubz song - We Dance On?), but I'm sure this would have been a big top 10 in the UK. As far as I'm aware it had no release or any sort of push here. I thought I'd read somewhere that the songwriters of Atomic Kitten's Whole Again loved this song and tapped into its general vibe/tempo when writing that. A lot of Imagine Dragons songs, most notably "Believer." A few Kygo singles, one of them coincidentally also with Imagine Dragons. Some European hits like "Jungle Drum", "I Will Love You Monday (365)", "Everything at Once", "Friends". Every Robin Schulz single after "Prayer In C". The Germanic speaking countries have had a lot of one-off hits by artists from elsewhere - Jungle Drum (Emiliana Torrini is from Iceland), I Will Love You Monday (365) (Aura Dione is Danish), I Follow Rivers (Lykke Li is Swedish), and another is If A Song Could Get Me You by Norwegian Marit Larsen which was No.1 in Germany/Austria/Switzerland and Norway and not a hit anywhere else. Funny how these countries tend to pick up on these songs/artists out of nowhere.

I agree with you that there are many examples up until maybe 2010. Globalisation sped up by the dominance of the internet and particularly streaming in the last decade has made many countries charts and hits more similar than they used to be, and I can't think of that many US top five hits of late for example that haven't been hits of any sort in the UK. August 7, 20195 yr Ain't Your Mama. It's the most popular #182 hit! Also, the fact that Emotions by Mariah and Escapade by Janet both only peaked at #17 here always confuses me since they're so well known
August 7, 20195 yr Aie Si Te Pego flopped here, as did In The Zone the album by Britney. It was one of her biggest across the world. Hollier didn't sell much, but absolutely slayed in Brazil and South America too!! Madonna For A Girl flopped here as well. What It Feels Like For A Girl? I don't think it did, a #7 peak for the final single is pretty good and it performed better than in most countries. It's surprising that Take A Bow broke her top 10 streak though since it was technically her biggest hit in the US and (according to Wikipedia) outsold the #4 and #8 peaking Bedtime Stories and Human Nature!
August 7, 20195 yr As a Finn I must point out that Fairytale Gone Bad by Sunrise Avenue (2006) should've been promoted in the UK. It reached top ten in Sweden, Austria, Germany and Switzerland among others but was never even released in the UK as far as I know.
August 7, 20195 yr Some Billboard number ones I can think of that didn't make it big in the UK: Ready For The World - Oh Sheila The Black Eyed Peas - Imma Be Monica - Angel Of Mine (iirc) Divine - Lately Enrique Iglesias - Be With You Carrie Underwood - Inside Your Heaven T-Pain feat. Yung Joc - Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin') The last three didn't chart in the UK at all (with the T-Pain one bubbling under the Top 100 according to zobbel.de) Other US Top 10 hits I can think of that didn't make it big in the UK include DaBaby's Suge (that might happen later this year), Shop Boyz' Party Like A Rockstar, Lady Antebellum's Just A Kiss, Drake's Best I Ever Had and Maxwell's Fortunate.
August 7, 20195 yr Author Although in the case of Monica it was an almost identical take of a song Eternal had already gone top five with two years earlier. Surprising in retrospect that Lately did nothing when it was a top ten hit when covered by Samantha Mumba a few years later.
