26. Lady Madonna (1968) / non-album single

6/21 votes

Next out is the McCartney fronted 'Lady Madonna'. This is another non-album single to drop out, as this was simply used as a tool to keep The Beatles' name out there while they were out of the country for their famous trip to India. This first Beatles release of 1968 topped the chart in the UK and climbed to a peak of #4 in the U.S. After a few years of psychedelia influencing the group's music, the aim of 'Lady Madonna' was to return The Beatles to their rock 'n' roll roots. A lot of artists followed their lead in 1968, by swapping excessive amounts of psychedelia for more of a back-to-basics approach. Paul has said that he aimed to impersonate Fats Domino with his vocal delivery on this song, elaborating that his voice went to unexpected places. He has also admitted that it took him years to realise that 'Lady Madonna' mentions every day of the week except Saturday! The record is about an exhausted mother who faces a new problem during (almost!) each day of the week. It feels weird to think of a time when the famous Madonna had not started her career yet, so yeah, this doesn't quite reference her!

Right I can choose something else now! It was tough, but I'm plumping for 'Get Back'. I think it's a good song but I've never been overly keen on Paul's vocal delivery on it.
Now it's getting a lot harder. Going for Get Back too as I think it's the weakest of their 17 No.1 singles.

Amma come back to protect Hey Jude if it ever gets in trouble. Don't k ow most of these.

Going tactical now so she loves you! When I was 5 it was fab gear but now I'm not 5 years old it's weathered less well than the other kiddie playground song yellow submarine
Definitely still She Loves You. The earlier stuff just isn’t a patch on the later material

I’ve been aiming to keep these open for three days but I’ll give you guys an extra day since I’m going to be busy with IRL plans and presenting BJSC results tonight! Next round coming tomorrow.
Can't for the life of me understand the dislike of She Loves You. It's just a great catchy pop song. I was only 3 in 1963 when it came out bu my mum says I was going round the house singing "yeah yeah yeah"

Can't believe Yellow Submarine hasn't been voted off yet! Surely it was written for a laugh - it can't be taken seriously as a song!

I too don't get the hate for She Loves You but then again - although I hated The Long and Winding Road when it first came out - I've come to love it in recent years (although to be fair - it is just a McCartney solo song rather than a Beatles song.
