23. Get Back (1969) / Let It Be

5/17 votes

It's another 'Let It Be' song that drops out this time. This leaves the title track as the last one standing from that album. 'Get Back' was released as a single in 1969 and became the group's first song to debut at #1 in the U.K. instead of climbing to the position. It stayed at the top for 6 weeks. 'Get Back' topped the chart in the U.S. too, their 17th #1 at the time, matching the amount of chart-toppers that Elvis had achieved in the States. Both 'Get Back' and its B-Side 'Don't Let Me Down' are famously connected to The Beatles' last live performance - on top of the Apple Studios roof. A different mix to the single version was added to the 'Let It Be' album as its closing track. This version instead closes on a quip made by John Lennon during the roof-top performances - namely "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition". Aside from Lennon's spoken parts and backing vocals, this is predominantly a Paul song. Billy Preston was also brought in by George Harrison to play keyboard on 'Get Back', this was to help minimise bickering between the group. The song mainly revolves around the line "get back to where you once belonged" and Lennon commented that Paul looked at Yoko Ono every time he sang the line in the studio, leading to his conclusion that "there's some underlying thing about Yoko in there". He also said that he thought it was a better version of 'Lady Madonna', so it seems that BuzzJack agrees with him on that one, as 'Get Back' finishes 3 places higher than that.

Glad that's out now as it was the clear weak link for me! Now is where it starts to get really difficult :( after some deliberating I've chosen 'Eight Days A Week', which is probably the best song from my least favourite Beatles album 'Beatles For Sale', but isn't as essential as the rest here.
I think I'll keep this open until Wednesday as I'm at an Ariana Grande concert tomorrow. Keep your votes coming!

Enjoy the concert!

Enjoy the concert!

Thanks Chris! :D very excited.

P.s. guys look what I got on eBay -

A vintage Beatles magazine! I had a lot of fun reading it (lots of fans writing in wishing for the group's second movie to be in colour, instead of black and white, was a particularly fun time capsule) - I think I'll treat myself to one each payday and build up a collection, as over 300 were published!

Wow you sure a big Beatles fan Jade!

Indeed! It pains me that I can obviously never see them live, but these magazines help to paint a picture of what the pandemonium was like at the time (in addition to footage on YouTube of course) and I can’t resist getting stuck into a collection. I told my grandparents about it and apparently they both used to get these magazines in the 60s!

Also yes, there’s a tie. I’d love to get the next round up today while I have the day off work so come through more voters!

I'll keep this open for another hour and if the tie-break is still there then I think I'll do a separate tie-break round for those 2 songs for 24 hours!
