Brexit bill backed with a majority of 124. Now Boris has a majority of 86 so others must have voted for it too.

6 Labour MPs voted for it, 32 others abstained. 3 line whip, but I suspect they consider the party to be in disarray.

One interesting thing Boris said this morning was that our fisherman, "trawlermen out in all weathers" will no longer be bound by so many quotas and red tape. That has to be one positive of Brexit.

Only if you fancy having a North Sea empty of fish in a few decades. Centralisation of this stuff produces oft-reported inefficiencies, but the rules and quotas are for the most part beneficial to the sector. can probably extrapolate that to the rest of the EU tbqh

The problem with Quotas isn’t that they exist but who owns the bulk of the quotas. A few very large companies own the absolute majority of the UK quota leaving very little for the ordinary fisherman to make a livelihood from. The quota itself is vital for ensuring a sustainable future for fishing, what needs to be changed is how the UK chooses to allocate it’s quota. Yet again a problem made by the UK Government and blamed on the EU.

Wonder who the new scapegoat will be for self-inflicted stupidity/Tory cruelty come Feb 1st

From BBC News.

Following a meeting of the Privy Council this evening, a proclamation issued in the name of the Queen, who wasn't present due to having gone to Sandringham earlier today, confirmed the intention to produce “coins in gold, silver, and cupro-nickel marking the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union on January 31st”. HRH Prince Charles was present at tonight's Privy Council meeting.

A Treasury spokesperson confirmed the commemorative Brexit coin was due to be issued at the end of January: “This coin will be introduced into circulation on the day the UK leaves the EU.”

In other news, Sky News say that sales of wine, champagne and other alcoholic drinks, and also snacks, are expected to soar just before Jan 31st, as millions of Brits prepare to celebrate the day we leave the EU. Retailers usually expect a quiet sales month after Christmas and New Year but are already stocking up in anticipation of increased sales as Brexit approaches. A Tesco spokesman said "we expect sales to be something like when England have an important World Cup match"

Also, special programmes are planned for late on Friday 31st Jan. by Sky, the BBC and ITV now that the Brexit agreement has been passed and the uncertainty has ended.

This has got to be a joke surely?

No, why should it be a joke. There'll be celebrations all around the country. We've waited long enough for this.

The fishing industry is one of the first things they'll make concessions for in a trade agreement. It's a very small percentage of the economy and Boris has a large majority, so there's nothing in the way of stopping the government from using it as leverage in a EU-UK trade deal.

Without quotas, stocks of fish would have been exhausted years ago. The Common Fisheries Policy is one of the EU's biggest successes,

The Common Fisheries Policy is one of the legitimate critisims and reasons for some voting to leave, I wouldn't necessarily call it one of the EU's biggest successes. It's one of the reasons Norway and Iceland aren't part of the EU. You can have a perfectly sustainable fishing industry without it and arguably a fairer industry than what is currently in place, particularly when dealing with quotas. Although that's very unlikely to occur under the current government given it's the wealthy and big businesses that own most of the fishing quotas in the UK.

In Theresa Mays words 'Nothing Wil Change'

The same cannot be said of the Common *Agricultural* Policy...

You mean like the special programmes scheduled for the end of March this year?

Six Labour MPs voted for it including one who seems to believe that an increase in the Tory vote of 1% was the difference between no mandate and an overwhelming one.

Yes and October. However the deal has been passed so it's virtually certain we're leaving on 31st Jan.

The CAP is far from perfect. Of course, the reason it is so difficult to get any meaningful reform is the power of veto which so many Leave supporters seem to believe doesn't exist.

But this time the Hoc hasn't blocked it...

But this time the Hoc hasn't blocked it...

It never has. It has been doing its job of holding the government to account. Now that Johnson has a load of dim-witted arse-lickers on his backbenches, that isn't happening.

Wasn't the power of veto a relic from when it had far fewer members?

Wasn't the power of veto a relic from when it had far fewer members?

It still exists for some areas. largely because countries such as the UK insisted on it.

The CAP is a prime example of how things could have been different if the UK had joined the Common Market at the very start.

Brexit is an absolute joke. The gov will put on a massive firework display for it, celebrating the ruin of the country.

Apparently it'll be live on BBC1 and Boris will say a few words before lighting the first firework.
