Of course nothing it’s going to change on Feb 1st. Mainly because we will be an EU member state in all but name. Absolutely disingenuous for any brexiteer to act as if it’ll all be fine because the transition arrangement has kicked in. Problems come 1st Jan 2021 at the end of the transition when BoJo has f***ed it on a free trade deal.

This is the key point. With the government effectively ruling out ANY extension to the transition period (ending on 31st December, which - isn't that far off, despite us just having celebrated New Year..!) that means that he has already given the power in the trade negotiations to the EU. The UK will have to accept whatever the EU offer because they now have this huge time pressure from this self-imposed pointless deadline. This is repeating the mistakes made when negotiating the WAB, which as we saw with the self-imposed 31st October deadline saw Boris accept the previously unacceptable border down the Irish Sea in order to 'get a deal done'.

This means we'll probably get a reasonable deal on goods trade, which the EU has a surplus with us on (minus £48 bn for the UK) - and a pretty sh1t one on services, about 40% of our trade (where we have a surplus, plus £77 billion for the UK).

Which will be sold to the public as 'a great deal'.

No point arguing about it, like most of us can see, 'a great deal' will be sold to the public but in reality it will be a shite one. The MPs and government will make a shed load of money for their personal game and then they have the safety next of 3 years before the next election to try and improve the public rating ready for a general election.

I've given up now, people voted to be worse off, let them be worse off. Nothing will amuse me better than taking advantage of the panic that is going to come, hopefully at the expense of a Brexiteer.

Why do you take that as read?

I don't agree - we can still walk away with No Deal if necessary.

They stood on a manifesto that we would have a deal. No deal should be off the table in the same way a second referendum is.

If the EU tries to foist a deal on us that's worse than No Deal, surely we should have the option to walk away, whatever the manifesto said?

There’s literally no such thing as something worse than no deal. By like actual dictionary definition.
Not great! We can apply for a visa from 1st February, but if you've been here for less than 5 years and on a temporary contract, then they only last as long as your work contract does (and when the contract ends in June is exactly when I will need it, so I can prove that I do indeed have the right to live and work here), and you also have to have a minimum income which I don't meet yet!

Oh Christ. That sounds fairly grim. If it’s June this year would you need anything for then? I thought that under the Withdrawal agreement we still have full free movement rights and access to the labour market until 1/1/2021? It’s the only reason I’m not shitting it about not being able to get back into Germany if I leave the country this year.

What is the minimum requirements for you? Sucks that there is a desire to put roadblocks up but I guess they’re only responding in kind to the UK Gov

I would not wish unwanted visa issues on my worst enemy, absolute best of luck Harve. The freedom of movement is such a valuable thing to be giving up and I think that will worsen the British population culturally as well as economically. Post-Brexit Britain had better be prioritising some goddamn second language training to combat this*.

*it won't.

I feel so bad for you guys. :( I've been very fortunate that a deal was worked out and ratified with the EFTA countries(Norway, Iceland etc) so that Brits who were registered as living here prior to Brexit can carry on as they do now.

The only precautionary measure I've had to take is exchange my UK driving licence over to an Icelandic one as the UK one probably won't be recognized on Icelandic roads this time next year. That'll be another inconvenience for tourists who find that suddenly they need to get an international licence.

I still fail to understand how Brexiteers think trade will go outside the EU wjen the UK is essentially landlocked by the EU on all sides - any trade coming to you will need to pass through France, Spain, The Netherlands, Portugal, EU airspace or EU waters to the North or West.

I got an international license before heading out here but under German law I have to swap if I stay for more than 6 months, my appointment is a week on Friday to get the paperwork done before brexshit day. Trying to take advantage of the ability to do a straight swap as an EU member state before all the complexities of mutual recognition and that come into it

Glad that you’ve been able to sort things out for your residency in Iceland! Do you still require a Schengen visa to visit another EFTA/EEA/EU country?

I am continually telling EU nationals in work to apply for 'settled status' so they can remain here following all this. Think they have to have been here longer than 5 years though

The Eton Mess apparently wants to crowdfund £500,000 for Big Ben to bong on Brexit night.

What a phucking tw@.

I’m sure Murdoch, Dyson, Farage or Tim Martin will be able to foot the bill.

Look no-one's forcing you to celebrate, attend any event, watch TV or be happy. We're luckily a free country though so let us who want to celebrate do so. Think wife's having her friends round, some food and bubbly. I have a Union Jack T-shirt to wear, hat and flag that she got me in the car boot sale in a pack on Sunday. It's nothing anyway cos we won't be properly out until 31st Dec.

From LBC.

LBC's Nick Ferrari offered to get Brexit backers to pay for Big Ben to bong on Brexit day after authorities ruled that it was too expensive.

A number of MPs had pushed for the bongs to be heard at 11pm on 31st January, but it is understood the House of Commons Commission has ruled it out on cost and logistical grounds.

Nick ridiculed the decision and immediately offered £1,000 to get the bell ringing.

And he started the campaign by contacting leading Brexiters such as Lord Bamford and Tim Martin from Wetherspoons to help get the rest of the money.

Big Ben only struck two weeks ago to mark the start of 2020, but since then, the temporary floor needed to ring the bell has been removed. It would need to be rebuilt in order to sound Big Ben again for Brexit day.

And you don't honestly think £500,000 could go to something more worthy?

Also, practice what you're preaching and don't try and tell me what to do. Thanks.

I'm guessing so since although I'll be living and working legally in Iceland I'll still be a legal foreigner with a non-EU passport. Theres still smaller details that are still up in the air.

All this to please knuckleheads that won't even see any benefit of leaving.

Yes of course I do.
