From the recent by elections a GE could be very interesting in blue wall areas a bit like 2017 now the dust has settled brexit wise but they would need decent organisation to not let the tories through the middle!

Well Labour stood in Chesham and Amersham but that didn't stop Lib Dems storming ahead. I'd be in favour of a formal alliance in some but not all seats.

In any case think the chance of a snap General election anytime soon is off until at least next year earliest but realistically 2023.

Hope Sturgeon goes for Scottish Independence again and they win..

Think the only way that happens is if there is a Leadership bid. I did wonder if the Tories would try and put one through before the public inquiry in to Covid, but the Conservatives are definitely rattled at the moment with faction wars. I think a few more close polls like this then we will see MPs start to panic. It's already telling when Steve Baker has tried to be the voice of moral reason for the Backbenchers.. crazy!

I agree with Steve's points about the 2017-2019 blue wall seats too post Brexit. No surprise nothing has really changed there apart from some extra funding to some places, but not all. And as most of us know the reasons why people voted Leave were not related to Brexit in a lot of cases.

Would rather the libs in single digits and let Labour take over 40%, get more done that way. There’s enough liberals in the Labour Party!

There are plenty of seats in the south which Labour will never win but the Lib Dems can. Chesham & Amersham is the obvious recent example.

Nice to see a poll with such a small lead.

I think Brexit may very well start to rear its ugly head more so now or take some of the light away from covid, which'll likely negatively impact the cons.

Labour 37 (+2)

Liberal Democrat 6 (-4)

Green 6 (+1)

Scottish National Party (SNP) 3 (+1)

UK Independence Party (UKIP) 3 (-)

Reform UK 2 (-)

Plaid Cymru (PC) 1 (+1)

Some other party 1 (-1)

Wow this is great to see. Think it's mainly due to the way that lockdown was lifted (especially the incomprehensible decision to make masks optional in transport and in shops which not a single sensible person agrees with).

Starmer OUT etc. etc.

He should be 20 points aheas in the polls! Etc etc. Such hypocrisy from you neoliberal lot.

And recent polls show the evil party increasing their lead (as no doubt the opening up is so far so good). :banghead:

I wonder if the situation regarding Afghanistan is going to have any effect on the polls. Quite a lot of papers lambasting the government over the situation currently.

I don't think it'll have much effect though as I'm pretty sure a majority of the public were of the opinion that the war in Afghanistan has not been worth it/we shouldn't have been involved in the first place.

Yeh it’s one of those events where MPs and establishmentarians are outraged whereas the public probably don’t care!

I suspect it will have an effect, probably not as major as it should. Seems like it will be a running story over the next few weeks - both Raab and Johnson have taken a beating in the National Papers today. Even lots of Tory MPs disagree with the way the Government have handled parts of the mess and the news about Raab allegedly not bothering to answer his phone on holiday is pretty scandelous.

It's kind of received wisdom that ordinary people™ don't care about foreign policy but I think it matters more than you'd expect (cf. Palestine coming up on the doors of Batley & Spen unprompted). Primarily because it's always big news and it's directly linked to nationalism and/or moral feelings in a way more domestic and nuanced issues are not so people can let their opinions out a bit more freely.

For one thing the Afghanistan current policy was already unpopular with the public but it was an issue that was lying dormant so it resurfacing again is going to remind people of the issue. For another, for any people who care about nationalism and Britain's place in the world, this is a reminder of how powerless and incompetent our current leadership are, if people are backing Conservative for that reason, this messes with their competence levels on anyone who was still believing MBGA-type delusions. Depends how the situation continues to shape, especially if Raab's name gets kept in the papers for culpability.

The public (Knowing Brexit Britain) are probably more concerned about refugees coming here

Got to spare a thought for the brexiteers and the British media. They’ve got a tough line to walk between their general anti-migrant racism and the irony of taking pot shots at Islam over women’s rights and saying we should take refugees while at the same time calling for boats in the channel, primarily filled with Afghans, to be shot and sunk.

It’s a tough time to be a racist islamophobic dickhead

Few polls out with varied leads (one has the Tories leading by 11%) but this one from a company (Kantar) that is notorious for giving the Tories astronomical leads since its inception has a significant shift away from them to the other parties. Nice to see the Lib Dems now almost mid teens.

CON: 37% (-7)

LAB: 34% (+3)

LDEM: 14% (+2)

GRN: 5% (+1)

REFUK: 2% (+1)

The one where literally nothing changed was rather funny.

We're either about to enter out from political deadlock or this is just the preamble for the next CON (+2) meme.
