7 Lewis Blissett - Killing Butterflies | 1-2-1-1-2-6-6-18-24-22-21-33-25-24-34-31-…

It's funny because I've watched at least part of every series of The Voice UK, and I watched the first series of The Voice Kids UK too, but none of the artists have made much of an impact. In fact, Becky Hill is the only one who's scored a top 10 in my chart, back in 2016 with Matoma on #7 hit False Alarm. A few international Voice artists have done well, including Michael Schulte and Cassadee Pope, as well as Voice Kids star Matteo Markus Bok most notably, but I never expected one of my favourite songs of 2019 to come from a star of The Voice Kids UK.

Enter 15 year old Lewis Blissett, a semi-finalist of Team Pixie from the first series. In recent times, Lewis has become known for his YouTube covers, primarily of Ariana Grande who he makes no secret of being a massive stan of on his Twitter. As mentioned upthread, I discovered debut release Sick Thoughts through a Buzzjack member, so by the time Killing Butterflies arrived as single 2, I was ready and waiting. It really didn't disappoint, either. It continues the dark, moody pop sound of Sick Thoughts, channelling Troye Sivan and Billie Eilish for an eerie, thumping instrumental and sublime vocals.

The track instantly became Lewis' first ever #1 in my chart, spending three non-consecutive weeks at the top, more than any other track this year. Lewis became the youngest artist to hit #1 since Greyson Chance's Sunshine & City Lights opened at the top when he was 15 years and 2 months old - Lewis was 15 years and 6 months old. The only younger artists are Greyson again, at 14 years and 5 months with Running Away, and Ronan Parke, exactly 14 years old for We Are Shooting Stars' week at #1 in August 2012. This all makes Killing Butterflies' success really impressive, and it continues to hang around my chart, currently on its 20th week in my top 40. Whenever Lewis releases his next single, it's bound to make a big impact, and I for sure can't wait!

6 froy - Fix Me | 1-2-3-4-5-9-11-19-24-23-29-32-35-37-40-27-33-39-38-x-32-x

Perhaps it's slightly sad to admit this, but I always give my dad a little countdown of my top 10 EOY songs every year. Last year, when I played sideswipe at #2, my dad predicted Froy would be a one-hit wonder, mostly based on the hype of meeting him at WereWolfCon that October. I was unsure at the time - sideswipe seemed to be another false start to his career, after previously scrapping an entire EP, and later scrapping the rest of the sideswipe project too seemingly. It felt a little like Froy didn't know where to go next in his music career, despite landing some pretty great acting gigs over the past couple of years.

When Froy announced he was releasing Fix Me as his brand new single, I was intrigued. I still didn't quite know what to expect from him at that point, but I was excited to hear the follow-up to my second favourite song of last year. Fix Me turned out to be one of the most instant songs of the year, and it's easy to see why. It's one of the most explicit tales of depression I've heard in music, going as far as to actually name "depression" in the bridge. The lyric "I'm too scared to live but I'm more scared to die" is one of the biggest gut-punches of a lyric I've heard all year. Yet somehow, among this tale of mental health and recreational drug use, Froy presents an uplifting, encouraging message - "can somebody fix me, I'm working on my mind // there's nothing wrong with me, just takes a little time." Goosebumps every time.

Fix Me of course became Froy's second #1 single, and though it didn't quite match sideswipe's longevity, it still had a huge chart run. Dare I say I'll go on to love this one more than sideswipe in years to come? It ticks all the boxes: emotion, the bop factor, and replayability. Once again, it remains to be seen if Froy will feature highly if at all next year, but here's hoping that he brings something just as high quality as this.

5 Bea Miller & 6LACK - it's not u it's me | 3-6-7-9-6-2-6-9-12-16-14-22-18-24-29-33-31-29-36-39-x-39-x

Flash back to 2012 when I actually watched a chunk of the second season of The X Factor USA, the season that produced Fifth Harmony most notably of course. One of the contestants was 13 year old Beatrice Miller, who brought an enjoyable pop/rock vibe to her performances, which were good for somebody so young! She finished in ninth place ultimately, and I for one certainly never expected to hear from her (or any of the X Factor USA contestants) ever again. Fast forward a few years, and Beatrice, now going by nickname Bea, released her first album Not An Apology, which I listened to and rather enjoyed. She only had one hit single to her name in my chart though - Yes Girl got to #24, then silence for three years as she fell off my radar.

I first heard it's not u it's me when I was at Zak Abel's concert at the Roundhouse in Camden. A Spotify playlist was playing in between the support act and Zak himself, and I really liked the sound of one song. I found the playlist to look up the song (it wasn't loud enough to Shazam) and found it was Bea Miller's latest track. I added it to my playlist to listen properly later, and I really grew to love the track. Bea's vocals are at their most slick, the production is top notch (the stop-start section while she sings "talking bullshit" is FABULOUS) and 6LACK's guest verse is really strong too, he definitely adds to the track (much more than on Rita Ora's Only Want You).

The track debuted at a very impressive #3 in its first week, lingering in the top 10 until it peaked at the very unlucky position of #2 in its sixth week. Its #2 peak annoys me and is a regret of mine for 2019 - it was blocked by Dominic Fike's 3 Nights, a great song, but it had nowhere near the impact of it's not u it's me and it was basically too close to call as well :( Of course, it's the highest non-#1 left in the countdown and the highest track by a female primary artist. Whether Bea will ever have another hit as big as this in my chart remains to be seen, as follow-ups have not come close to it's not u it's me, but I'm really hoping she pulls another brilliant track like this out of the bag in 2020.

4 Greyson Chance - shut up | 3-4-5-7-6-2-2-1-2-5-9-12-16-20-25-30-28-22-25-26-30-25-27-30-35-38-40-x-10-17-x

When Greyson Chance announced the first single from his sophomore album was coming, I didn't really have any expectations. His last top 10 hit in my chart was two and a half years prior, and while I hoped it would've been enjoyable, none of his standalone single in the interim even came close. I thought my days of stanning Greyson were long gone, even though I was intrigued to hear the song based on the small snippet, featuring the first chorus with Greyson's strong falsetto. What's more is that shut up came out in one of the busiest weeks of the year - its main contender was The Chainsmokers' Who Do You Love, and Oscar Enestad's I Love It joined (and subsequently thrashed) the battle on the Saturday night after Melodifestivalen.

Therefore, shut up proved to be one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the year. Falsetto can be hit-or-miss with me - I like it in some songs but not others, and shut up is one of the songs where it really truly works. It's especially good to hear the contrast between the verses and chorus in Greyson's voice, which has matured so much over the years. Lyrically, the song is about being deeply in love with someone, and perhaps talking a little too much out of nerves when being around them. It's a simple yet relatable concept, and an instant indicator of the direction portraits, its parent album, was set to go in.

shut up debuted at #3 in my chart, behind Oscar at #1 and The Chainsmokers at #2. It was Greyson's highest charting track since 2012's #1 hit Sunshine & City Lights, and stuck around in the top 10 for several weeks before finally reaching a new peak of #2 in week six, spurred on by the album release. Two weeks later, it managed to go even higher, becoming Greyson's third #1, and first, again, since Sunshine & City Lights. It's his second longest running hit (trailing only mammoth hit Running Away throughout 2012-13 - the early days of my chart were something else...!), and his best EOY position to date. It's amazing the impact that one song can have, because this was just the start of a year that Greyson helped define for me.

3 Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love | 3-1-1-2-4-2-2-5-7-5-6-9-8-6-8-13-14-22-26-27-29-35-40-x

Over the past few years, I've really become a massive fan of Whitney Houston. Her greatest hits albums really are an incredible listen with no filler tracks to be found. An undeniable voice and talent, especially on her emotional, raw ballads like I Will Always Love You and my personal favourite, Greatest Love of All. There's also the bops too, though - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), So Emotional, How Will I Know? and so many more. Losing Whitney was such a gutting loss for the world of music, but I can't lie, I was sceptical to hear Kygo was remixing a mostly unheard retro Whitney track seven years after her death. Would it live up to her legacy? Would it be handled as respectably as possible? Would it actually be worth listening to?

First listen of Higher Love was entirely positive, though. In fact, it was surprisingly positive. Having not heard the original Whitney cover of Higher Love, I didn't know just how GOOD she would sound. It was from Whitney's prime, so her voice really couldn't have sounded any better. What I really loved too is that while Kygo adds his trademark production traits, he never detracts from Whitney being the prime focus of the track. She's up front and centre for the duration of the track, just the way it should be in a celebration of her career, legacy and life. Any worries about this being a cheap cash-in were quickly expelled because Higher Love ticked every box, and then some.

Higher Love debuted at #3 in my chart, behind Why Don't We's Come to Brazil which debuted at #1, and the previous week's #1 from Señorita by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. The following week, it leapfrogged both to reach #1, becoming the first chart-topper for either artist, beating #2 hit Firestone for Kygo. It spent two weeks at the top, one of only a few tracks to manage more than a sole week at the top in 2019, before Alec Benjamin's Jesus in LA dethroned it. Higher Love spent a huge fifteen weeks in my top 10 - matching froy's sideswipe from 2018. The last song to spend longer in my top 10 was Frans' If I Were Sorry, which managed seventeen weeks in 2016. A huge shoutout to its music video too, which was really brilliant, especially with the Whitney posters in the background. A truly special track, rightfully placing Whitney back in the charts, where she belongs.

2 Harry Styles - Lights Up | 1-1-3-2-3-3-7-7-3-3-6-...

My love of Harry Styles is well-documented across the forum, ever since I joined. There's not a box he doesn't tick for me: vocally, aesthetically, musically. His debut solo album in 2017 was very good, though it was always quite clear that he had room to get even better on the whole. Despite that, its lead single Sign of the Times has been one of the biggest hits of the decade for me, and topped my 2017 EOY with ease. When Harry started to tease his second era, my fangirling had never been higher. I knew what was going to come would be brilliant, even if I wasn't sure exactly what sound he would return with.

Waking up to see Lights Up had been released created such an unbeatable feeling of excitement. I immediately listened before I even got out of bed, and really enjoyed it from the very start. The unusual structure of the track makes it an interesting listen, and Harry uses his voice to perfectly convey light and shade throughout. My favourite part of the song is the middle section - "step into the light, it's so bright sometimes" - but honestly each part is essential and the track's reasonably short length means Lights Up has lots of replayability and a single listen is never too long.

It goes without saying that Lights Up debuted at #1, and it secured two weeks at the top spot, just one short of Sign of the Times. That said, it's gone on to become Harry's longest top 10 runner - finishing on a total of 13 weeks. It's also my most played Harry song (helped by the fact Sign of the Times is basically double the length so it was easier for Lights Up to rack up more plays), and it remains my favourite from the Fine Line album. The video is extremely good - the imagery is perfect and it's Harry's first truly brilliant music video. Lights Up felt like the moment Harry Styles truly became his own popstar, and it's a significant moment in his stellar career so far.

1 Oscar Enestad - I Love It | 1-2-1-2-5-11-14-13-16-19-24-25-34-39-x-33-26-33-x-29-x-30-33-x

Once upon a time, there was a boyband called The Fooo. The band name came from the members' first names - Felix Sandman, Oscar Enestad, Omar Rudberg and Olly Molander. A band rename saw them become The Fooo Conspiracy, releasing a series of singles, including My Girl and Who Doesn't Love Love, both of which became top 10 and top 20 hits respectively in my chart. Another name change came shortly after the release of the latter as Olly left the group, leaving Felix, Oscar and Omar to be FO&O. Their debut as a trio came in Melodifestivalen 2017 with Gotta Thing About You, which qualified for the final and spent two weeks at #1 in my chart. Another #1 single and a #1 album later, FO&O went on "hiatus", and we know what that means for pop groups.

Cue three individual solo careers - Felix Sandman launched his at Melfest 2018, while Oscar and Omar released their own tracks that year too, neither really making any impact on me. Felix was winning the race. Melodifestivalen 2019 saw Oscar and Omar performing with separate tracks. Omar' Om om och om igen became his first top 40 in my chart but still he failed to create many waves. Oscar, having just scored a #1 with second single Sign of My Love in my chart, made a noticeably bigger impression.

I Love It is Oscar's story of loving the person he wants to love, regardless of who disapproves. This is particularly relevant for 22 year old Oscar, who is dating 51 year old Cecilia Dahlbom. Naturally, the couple have faced backlash, but they've been dating for at least three years now! Oscar wanted the song to be relevant for more than just him, though - he says it's for anybody who might face an uphill battle in love. Songwriter Parker James is gay, for example, and the song could quite easily be about somebody in a "forbidden" gay relationship. It's an important track no matter what, so the fact it finished last in its Melodifestivalen heat was a pretty depressing and sorry state of affairs - let's do better, Sweden! Away from the lyrical content, I Love It is an uptempo, club inspired pop track. Oscar sold it with conviction in the live performance, though unfortunately it never received a music video.

It's undoubtedly Oscar's best track to date, and debuted at #1 in my chart with absolute ease. Despite facing competition from The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds of Summer and Greyson Chance, I Love It's #1 was never in question - pun aside, I simply loved it from first listen. Very few songs give me the instant joy and adoration that I had of this track on my very first play. It's also not gotten old all year, and that's what sealed it the #1 - I still play it very frequently even now! Its lack of top 10 weeks looks unusual for a song so gigantic, but it was pushed out in a week with five new entries and a big climber in the top 10. It's actually back in my chart again right now, reaching as high as #10 in the first week of 2020, so there really is no stopping I Love It. What a beast of a track, and I can't wait for Melodifestivalen 2020 to begin tonight - funnily enough, with Oscar's bandmate Felix back on the stage. Maybe in a year we'll be talking all about BOYS WITH EMOTIONS? :o

I Love It was SO robbed!! I was ready to hate a solo FO&O track after Just Another Day was so terrible but what a banger, last was an absolute joke. That and Tempo being robbed on the same night :(

:( it was a really gutting moment because it came across SO well live, too! I'm not sure what didn't click really :drama: Thanks for commenting Liam

Giving your #1 a listen now - it's sounding very good! A pop song but with dance elements in it as well which really works, the melody is brilliant as well. Ooh and the strings have just kicked in, that's a nice touch also!

Nice to see Higher Love so high as well, a brilliant effort from both of them and such a shame it just missed the top spot.

Looking forward to your EOD countdown, hopefully there's some crossover between our lists!

41 Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss | 2012 | EOY Peak: 5

42 Taylor Swift - Lover | 2019 | EOY Peak: 4

43 Lewis Watson - The Morning | 2014 | EOY Peak: 8

44 Taylor Swift - reputation | 2017 | EOY Peak: 5

45 Cody Simpson - Surfers Paradise | 2013 | EOY Peak: 3

46 One Direction - Made In the A.M. | 2015 | EOY Peak: 7

47 Anne-Marie - Speak Your Mind | 2018 | EOY Peak: 6

48 Britney Spears - Glory | 2016 | EOY Peak: 2

49 One Direction - Midnight Memories | 2013 | EOY Peak: 4

50 Years & Years - Communion | 2015 | EOY Peak: 2

Compiling my top 50 albums of the decade was pretty impossible. I'd forgotten just how many incredible albums I've heard over the past 10 years, and I really could have gone further to a top 60/70 but I had to draw the line somewhere...! It says it all when my second favourite albums of 2015 and 2016 only just made it in. Years & Years' debut album was one I spent a lot of time with in 2015 but haven't gone back to much since, while Glory is Britney's best album in years - a very strong effort with some killer tracks! There's double One Direction in here - unsurprisingly, they feature more than any other artist, with all five of their albums in my top 50 (and a further two solo albums by Harry Styles).

Debut albums from Lewis Watson and Anne-Marie feature here, as well as Cody Simpson's second album Surfers Paradise, which spent seven straight weeks at #1 in my chart upon release, eventually lifting to a total of eight. Taylor Swift appears twice with reputation and Lover, the first two of four albums to feature (Red unfortunately missed out). Closing the section is Carly Rae Jepsen's Kiss - controversially, this is my favourite album of hers! It helped define my 2012 and I still revisit it regularly now. A brilliant album, packed with some really strong bubblegum pop moments.
