January 21, 20205 yr Aww Who Do You Love so low here. :( Well, it will be definitely higher in my EOY. :P and I agree with you Luke's vocals are the strongest part.
January 21, 20205 yr great to see Never Really Over comfortably top 40 here. just missed out on my top 100.
January 21, 20205 yr Though I'd love to see it higher, I'm glad to see Never Really Over racking up a really good spot for you!
January 21, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 300 Songs 30 Why Don't We - Cold In LA | 16-1-3-6-11-15-20-26-34-x Time for some more Why Don't We! Cold In LA was the second release of 2019 and it hit #1 in my chart in its first full week. The midtempo track has really strong production, and their vocals are at their absolute best, notably Zach in the bridge and Jonah in the chorus! I really like the video too, and how apt that LA actually WAS cold when this song came out - their impact *.* End of Year History Why Don't We 2018 | 001 | Hooked 2018 | 004 | 8 Letters 2018 | 005 | Trust Fund Baby 2018 | 009 | Talk 2018 | 061 | These Girls 2018 | 227 | Boomerang 2019 | 000 | I Still Do 2019 | 000 | What Am I 2019 | 030 | Cold In LA 2019 | 033 | Come to Brazil 2019 | 036 | Unbelievable 2019 | 041 | Big Plans 2019 | 092 | Mad At You 2019 | 095 | I Don't Belong In This Club (Why Don't We & Macklemore) 2019 | 161 | With You This Christmas 2019 | 223 | Don't Change 0Dlh7FLz7oY 29 Oscar Enestad - Sign of My Love | 1-2-3-4-13-19-19-29-33-x Former FO&O member Oscar Enestad was announced to be taking part in Sweden's Melodifestivalen in a bid to represent his country at Eurovision with his song I Love It, but a month before that track was released, he dropped Sign of My Love, his second solo release. I wasn't that big on debut release Heaven On My Skin, but Sign of My Love instantly made a big impact. Lyrically, it's a song about being jealous of attention your partner gets, even when you trust them. The production is sublime - the final chorus is a huge highlight! January 22, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 300 Songs 28 Matteo Markus Bok - Mrs Lonely | 1-1-3-6-12-22-24-37-x-36-x Both the final #1 single of 2018 and the first of 2019, Matteo Markus Bok scored a fourth #1 single in just four months with his romantic, wintery ballad. It's also the fourth single from debut album Cruisin', and helped him to tie what was then a record for the most #1s within a calendar year (since broken by Why Don't We in 2019). The video features his then-girlfriend Eleonora Gaggero - slightly awkward now perhaps? :kink: He likes her Instagram posts so perhaps all is good, I've got no idea lol x Either way, it's reminiscent of a typical winter ballad that pop acts used to release throughout the noughties, a very cute track. It topped the US chart and became her first UK top 5 hit too, and also her very first solo #1 in my chart, and only her second overall after We Don't Talk Anymore. Her vocals shine against the delicate production, and it's absolutely and rightfully going to go down as a Selena classic. January 22, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 300 Songs 26 Matteo Markus Bok - Besos Besos | 1-3-6-11-13-11-22-29-37-x Matteo's highest track of 2019 is the bilingual Spanglish anthem Besos Besos. The track follows in the footsteps of 2018's El Ritmo, with English verses and a Spanish chorus, and both are extremely infectious too. The track is uptempo and fun, and became his fifth #1 single upon its release. The title translates as "kisses", and it's become a common sign-off to his fans through Instagram lives and videos that he posts since! In those seven years, he's scored at least one top 10 hit every single year in my chart. He's only 19 years old. That's quite some going really, and his music style hasn't changed as drastically as many young artists end up doing. Typically, the label influence their early music, before they branch off into something less poppy, but Isac's not given up on pop. In fact, Waiting Game is traditional Isac dance-infused pop, with a catchy chorus and strong production throughout. It quickly became Isac's second #1 in my chart upon release, following Mouth to Mouth, the first #1 single of 2018. In fact, it does one better than Mouth to Mouth in my EOY! January 23, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 300 Songs 24 froy - When It's Midnight | 1-2-4-8-13-11-18-22-20-26-31-40-x One of the busiest weeks of the year saw new releases from Katy Perry, Camila Cabello, Rita Ora, Cheryl, Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and several other of my favourite artists. Interestingly though, the more subdued When It's Midnight soared through them all and gave Froy Gutierrez his third #1 single, continuing his 100% top 2 hit rate. The Teen Wolf star continued to solidify his status as an exciting pop star with yet another versatile track, and his most downtempo release yet. It really works, with an encouraging tale about how to cope with anxiety even when all seems dark. As 15 year old Lewis Blissett's first single, the dark-pop debut release was actually a discovery from somebody else's personal chart when I was compiling the multichart (I can't remember whose it was now but thank you for the inadvertent recommendation!). It climbed to its peak of #9 in its fourth week in my chart, yo-yoing around for weeks both before and after its peak, even re-entering the top 10 four weeks later when follow-up Killing Butterflies was released, book-ending the top 10. Now, Sick Thoughts is by FAR the highest non-top 5 hit in this countdown. The second highest, Ashley Tisdale's Symptoms, finished #57. It's a remarkable result, and the highest result for a non-top 5 track in my EOY since 2013, when Ulrik Munther's #7 hit Thousand Years finished at #17, and very impressively, Mariah Carey's #9 hit #Beautiful finished at #8...! January 23, 20205 yr Giving Sick Thoughts a listen now, obviously don't think it's my thing :kink: but the beat is quite nice and his vocals are brill also. When It's Midnight is sounding nicer though, those steel drums are a nice touch!
January 23, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 300 Songs 22 Alec Benjamin - Jesus In LA | 5-1-2-4-6-11-16-19-23-30-35-37-37-x The second single Alec Benjamin released in 2019 is his first of three to depart from this countdown. Jesus In LA is a metaphor for success, and talks about how his original record deal went down the pan. He moved to LA and found life lonely, with his career failing to take off and eventually being dropped. It's undoubtedly one of his most honest tracks to date, and that's really saying something when you look at some of the tracks he's put out already. Alec also called it one of his favourites he's written when the song was released! It became his third #1 single in its first full week of release in my chart. For now, the focus is on What Am I, the only track they released over the course of 2019 to actually get a push to radio. It makes sense - the track was written by Ed Sheeran after all, though unlike previous Ed-penned track Trust Fund Baby, it's a romantic ballad. It premiered with its music video and instantly became a record-extending sixth #1 for them over the course of 2019, and their tenth overall. On tour, they performed it acoustically - the only track of the night where they ditched the backing track and performed with instruments. It was a special moment, and as a result, it rebounded to #5 in my chart! January 24, 20205 yr Author 2019: Top 10 Artists 5 Ruel It's quite difficult to listen to Ruel's music and remember that he's only 17 years old, but the Australian singer/songwriter has a style that's already incredibly mature. 2019 saw the release of his second EP, titled Free Time, a whole year after his debut EP Ready came out. Ready was already mature for then-15 year old Ruel (full name Ruel van Dijk), with a track like Younger exploring a lost friendship with an incredible video to boot. However, the confidence followed the talent in 2019, and Free Time presented a more vulnerable, yet more confident Ruel who knew which direction his music was heading and what he wanted to achieve. His voice has matured incredibly too - of course, when he's still so young, small differences will be noticed with each passing release. His voice has a lot more grit to it now, but also a lot more soul. This really shines on ballads like Unsaid and Hard Sometimes, as well as the soaring title track. He also sounds absolutely incredible live - I saw him twice in 2019, firstly at The Garage, then at Electric Brixton where I met him and got possibly my best meet and greet photo ever? Pic here to examine! The show was his best yet, and I've been to all of his London gigs. He's a rising star, and I really hope 2020 is an even bigger year for Ruel. 4 Alec Benjamin I must admit, when I first discovered Alec Benjamin in mid-2016, I don't think I expected him to be having such a massive impact three years into the future. In fact, he was pretty much off my radar for the 2 years following my discovery, beyond initial #16 hit End of the Summer, and #6 hit I Built a Friend in mid-2017. It was only when Let Me Down Slowly came out in May 2018 that I really began to closely follow Alec, especially with his new record deal and therefore more frequent releases. His debut mixtape Narrated for You came out in late 2018, and continued its impact into 2019, charting in my album chart the entire way through the year, and still charting now into 2020! 2019 also saw the release of three brand new singles - Must Have Been the Wind, Jesus In LA and Mind Is a Prison. All three continued Alec's unique take on the singer/songwriter sound, with unique observations about, respectively, domestic violence, the breakdown of a record contract, and being trapped in your own thoughts and feelings. Not everything he sings about is relatable to everyone, but Alec sings with plenty of description and emotion to help you feel everything he's going through. I saw Alec live three times over the year and met him twice - one picture is here and the other is here! The third and final time was my favourite, it was my first experience of being front-row at a standing concert  3 Matteo Markus Bok I discovered Matteo Markus Bok at the very end of 2017, though I can't entirely remember how. I think it could have been a YouTube recommendation? I might be wrong on that, but I know the first song I heard was Just One Lie. It was a #3 hit in my chart, but I suspected he could have been a one-hit wonder. How wrong I was. By the end of 2018, he'd scored four #1 singles, with a fifth that came in 2019. The 16 year old Italian popstar managed to build up a string of hits simply by embracing pop music and having fun with his passion. I've said it already in this countdown, but that's what sets Matteo apart from most teen male artists - he's not forced into making pop music, he's making it because he truly loves it, and it shines through. 2019 saw Matteo release debut album Cruisin', incorporating his previous five singles - El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI), In the Middle, Shallow, Mrs Lonely and Besos Besos - alongside three new songs. While I was disappointed with only three new songs and eight in total, the album proved to have no filler. It's yet to leave my album chart, and it became the first studio album to chart all of its tracklist in my top 40. An impressive achievement for sure! Unfortunately, I've yet to see Matteo live - his presence in the UK is virtually non-existent, but I'd absolutely love a UK show one day. I can keep dreaming, right? 2 Greyson Chance I've spoken before about just how remarkable 2019 was for Greyson Chance. He never truly fell off my radar really, but my interest certainly began to dip after how much I truly adored debut album Hold On 'Til the Night. Follow-up EP over a year later, Truth Be Told Pt. 1 (we never got Pt. 2) was quite nice but not up to the same standard, and the next couple of standalone singles sounded like they had a budget of about 10p - because they probably did. Somewhere Over My Head, his 2016 EP, got me back on track, but it was another three years and a bunch of standalone tracks before we arrived at portraits, his second album, though in many ways, it was his first. In the eight years between Greyson's albums, he went through school, a record deal, and a lot of self-discovery. He came out as gay, rendering tracks like Little London Girl and Cheyenne a little dated from the debut album...! However, portraits gave him the chance to say what he wanted to say, without label interference. portraits was an honest look at love and life, both positive and negative, and the result was an incredible package of raw emotion that completely took me by surprise. I finally met Greyson at both London dates of his tour in October, and it was incredible to be able to tell him just how much his music has meant to me. He's the same age as me, so we've grown up together, and gone through many shared experiences. He promises album three won't be far off, and it's got some big Boots to fill. Props to anyone who gets that pun xx 1 Harry Styles Although he didn't end up with my EOY #1 album, Harry Styles had to be my top artist of 2019. No artist incites quite as much excitement in me as Harry, and this isn't a new thing. When solo debut Sign of the Times premiered, I woke up extra early not just to hear the song's premiere, but to listen to the full interview with Nick Grimshaw that aired on Radio 1 straight after. The entire morning, and that first play, still ring so vividly in my head as being a truly special moment of music for me - something I'll surely elaborate on when I discuss Sign of the Times in my EOD countdown (yes we're still not done with countdowns :kink:). That same excitement was present for Lights Up, the lead single from Harry's then-untitled second album. I knew he was releasing something that night, so I was too excited to sleep, but waking up to the new track was so exciting. I listened while lying in bed - I wasted no time! The feeling of excitement was present for Watermelon Sugar and Adore You too, and of course the album, which truly blew my expectations out of the water. The album release week was unlike no other - attending the pop-up shop in London and spending lots of money on merch, as well as HARRY WAVING AT ME FROM A BALCONY!!!! Then being lucky enough to attend his One Night Only show in London the night after... what an incredible couple of days. I made memories not just with Fine Line, but with Harry himself, and it only cemented even further why I f***ing love Harry Styles.
