January 10, 20205 yr Author Especially for female artists, it seems to take moments like these when popular solo pop artists come together to form a “supergroup” for a special single release to set the charts alight such as this #2 hit from 2019 that may have been forgotten by now; leopt__ATR0 Then there was also this UK #1 from 2014; 0HDdjwpPM3Y And this UK #1 from 2001; RQa7SvVCdZk Proving that at times it takes a collective effort to get some pop music to do well in the charts. Of course these are not pop groups in the traditional sense, but they do happen every so many years and impact the charts. Edited January 10, 20205 yr by awardinary
January 10, 20205 yr but don't think Tones & I is the exception there's pop everywhere, Dua Lipa, Taylor, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Camila, Serena, Harry Styles Keep going?
January 10, 20205 yr It’s not just UK pop either, US groups struggle over here too, I think only Jonas Brothers and 5 Seconds Of Summer were able to score a couple of Top 40 hits in early 2019. I wouldn’t put Maroon 5 in that category though as they’re chameleons when it comes to changing their sound. Could someone name the last US girl group to get a UK Top 40 single? I genuinely don’t know the answer but my guess would be Fifth Harmony and that’s going back to 2016. 5 Seconds of Summer are Australian by the way.
January 10, 20205 yr Another casing point I've seen you post this in a few threads and it's "case in point", not "casing point"
January 10, 20205 yr But you only need to look at the descriptions of the "Sound of" artists to see where the music industry is going wrong: Multi-tentacled art-rock polymaths  at this description.
January 10, 20205 yr ^ off the top of my head G.R.L. (as a feature on that Pitbull song), Neon Jungle and Fifth Harmony have all had top 10 hits since 'Disco Love' was released! (but yeah 'Work From Home' would be the one)
January 10, 20205 yr Are The Saturdays the last girl group to get a top 10? Minus Little Mix 5th harmony?
January 10, 20205 yr Squid! Oh I didn't know which band it was referring to....it makes more sense now.

(but yeah 'Work From Home' would be the one) I thought Disco Love was older than Braveheart somehow. So in 7 years we’ve had Wild Wild Love, Work From Home, Braveheart and Discolove manage to go top 10! That’s absolutely tragic in terms of girl groups again excluding a little mix.

January 10, 20205 yr They split up in 2015 iirc. Also Louder wasn't their biggest hit, that would have been Braveheart. Already edited.. Ah, Braveheart....which sounded like a poppier take on the big room house trend of the time. 'Welcome To The Jungle' was better.
January 10, 20205 yr Already edited.. Ah, Braveheart....which sounded like a poppier take on the big room house trend of the time. 'Welcome To The Jungle' was better. I already edited mine as soon as I saw you had edited yours! The cycle continues  And I always preferred Braveheart myself!
January 10, 20205 yr I already edited mine as soon as I saw you had edited yours! The cycle continues  And I always preferred Braveheart myself! I am revisiting the Neon Jungle singles now. The 'Ichi, ni, san, kaesu' bit said in an annoying voice and the later rap verse with very random lyrics puts me off it a bit and loses it credibility, other than that it's a decent attempt at big room house from a pop group. Their debut 'Trouble' would make a very good alarm ringtone in the morning, loud and annoying  but I strangely like it too as a song. And for Louder the vocal in the verse just before 'pull every pin' is one of the nicest vocals I have heard on a girlband track - she sounds a bit like Dido too. That vocalist should have gone solo with that style of singing definitely! Edited January 10, 20205 yr by JanuarySaleSnake
January 10, 20205 yr Yes, it's a shame. There don't seem to be that many new solo proper pop artists making it either. Dua Lipa and Mabel are the only recent ones I can think of. But you only need to look at the descriptions of the "Sound of" artists to see where the music industry is going wrong: Soulful poet unpicking the anxieties of a generation Genre-bending indie-funk quintet Multi-tentacled art-rock polymaths Hypersonic emo-pop for the underrated youth Not everyone wants this nonsense. Some of us just want good, timeless pop songs. Not everything has to have an edge. I don't get why they don't find some pretty blonde and give her a Steve Mac/Ina Wroldsen pop banger, job done. The 'Sound of...' list is generally pushing the most critically acclaimed artists, it's not the place to look for basic pop music lol ~ (not that it's never had more straightforward pop acts on it before but they've always been a minority). Pop music (including by groups) is still out there if you bother to look for it, just because it's not as prominent in the charts any more doesn't mean it's ceased to exist.

That's a good casing point. Yes Sound Of.... does tend to be much more geared towards indie and R&B/urban than pop. Edited January 10, 20205 yr by JanuarySaleSnake
