I had high hopes that M.O would be successful, but they again appear to have gone AWOL after a flurry of minor hits, but when Bad Vibe got Top 20 in 2018 I was sure there would be more to come... but there wasn’t.

I strangely liked 'Who Do You Think Of' by M.O. at the time despite really disliking the big tropical pop and tropical house trends at the time.

They released a new song literally a couple of months ago.

The reason they 'went AWOL' for a while was because one of their members went to prison by the way... :P

So in 7 years we’ve had Wild Wild Love, Work From Home, Braveheart and Discolove manage to go top 10! That’s absolutely tragic in terms of girl groups again excluding a little mix.

And Worth It. Plus Ugly Heart was massive and peaked at #11 and Fifth Harmony had more Gold certified top 40 hits (Flex and That's My Girl plus Bo$$ is probably almost Gold too) and I don't know why we're discounting the dozen that Little Mix have had? M.O also have two platinum top 20 hits under their belt from 2016 and 2018.

It's not all about top ten singles.

And Welcome to the Jungle was another top ten for Neon Jungle of course, add that to the list.

One or more of the big K-pop girlbands could still get a UK chart hit or City Girls maybe but apart from these examples and Little Mix there aren't many girl bands around who can make the charts any more.

Edit: oh Haim could still get a top 40 hit too, forgot about them!

Really? I never knew that. It's not every day you hear of a member of a girl band being sent to prison!

They've released some decent singles actually, it's a pity they haven't had more success.

Isn't this thread about pop though? I'd class Haim as more alternative than pop. Having said that, I'd love Haim to get a Top 40 single.

It was a tragic accident. Just putting that out there.

I remember the days when chart was saturated with Pop bands, Let Loose, Blue, Another Level, Boyzone, Take That, Westlife, Sugababes, All Saints, Liberty X, Spice Girls, Steps, Made In London, Thunderbugs etc etc I could go on, but unfortunately everything has its sell by date (pardon the expression) and when some of them start reforming they are hardly setting the charts alight. The group market has suffered.

Currently there is only Little Mix, Take That, Westlife, can't think of anything else at the moment, but that's virtually a tiny market for groups.

I loved those days.

To be precise, she pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving. She was jailed for eight months and she's back with the band now.

Rak Su really should have been huge. They had an EP full of original songs when they won X-Factor and yet Syco waited a year to launch them with generic trash.

Is there any chance of them getting a chart hit again? It would be nice but surely by now their popularity has diminished with the general public. I saw them as another JLS at the time, but I’ve heard some of their other output and it’s not bad. Sadly, their example proves that The X Factor is no guarantee of chart success for pop groups.

I have never heard of the bands Made In London or Thunderbugs!

There's some great pop groups around that are making a varying number of ripples but radio stations don't seem to be keen to offer much support. Boybands like New Hope Club, Why Don't We, PRETTYMUCH and In Real Life have all actually amassed significant fanbases - notably, Why Don't We sold out two nights at Hammersmith's Eventim Apollo last year, the equivalent of Anne-Marie's tour last year, yet Radio 1 aren't interested in offering them any more support than a play on "Best New Pop." Perhaps it's to do with their ongoing demands to play more British music, and American boybands are probably lower down their priority list (not that this matters for New Hope Club who are actually British), but it's a shame that not even Capital or Kiss are really taking notice of any of these artists. Each have songs that could and should have been hits - New Hope Club (Medicine, Permission, Know Me Too Well), Why Don't We (8 Letters, Big Plans, What Am I), PRETTYMUCH (Would You Mind, Mo More, Solita) and In Real Life (Tattoo, Tonight Belongs to You) and all of them have major label backing too, so it's a shame that nowhere actually seems to be taking notice.

There seem to be fewer girl groups but the closest equivalent to any of those has to be Four of Diamonds, who also have a major label behind them and some cracking songs coming out but nobody seems interested - which is a huge shame. Perhaps the X Factor tag isn't helping them? Seems unfair when they've come on so much from the X Factor days.

I posted similar thoughts to these on another topic along the 'Is pop struggling/dead?' lines a few weeks back, I'll repeat them here (albeit rejigged)...

As others have pointed out these things are all cyclical really. Always have been. Everyone thought pop bands bar Girls Aloud, McFly and Sugababes was good for dead in the late 00s when it was all landfill indie bands and faceless dance music. Streaming has undoubtedly made it more difficult of late though, because it's harder for anyone to get a look in. If anything it's gone regressive where the prejudice about being a pop group or being in one that was rife in the late 90s has returned. I do think there's been some great pop acts around though, even if they're not having say, Stormzy or Lewis Capaldi levels of success.

Now United, who are Simon Fuller's new pop group (well relatively new, they've been going just over a year now) have done pretty well worldwide, particularly in Latin and South America, and they've got some great songs like 'Legends' and 'All Day' to name a few. Just annoying that it took until September last year for Simon to realise you couldn't launch a pop act in this day and age without streaming, which considering how forward thinking his previous multi brand concepts like S Club and Pop Idol were was peculiar to say the least.

Four of Diamonds, who've been mentioned here are looked after by Peter Loraine at Fascination and they've have had some great singles too, but again are struggling to get a wider breakthrough.

I do believe though that we're due another turn of the cycle back the other way. I think with Little Mix's new talent show on BBC One coming up this year that will be interesting to see what's produced from that, because whoever wins it will by definition have a huge potential new audience awaiting them with the right songs and chemistry.

They've released alot of material which is impressive considering they've only got one hit single (since X-Factor they've had Pyro Ting, I Want You To Freak, an EP with all four tracks having a music video, Yours Or Mine, Rotate, La Bomba and Girl not including their EP with their original X-Factor songs) but nothing has charted, Syco dropped them and Myles is now doing presenting work and reality TV so they're probably gonna split or something which is a shame.

This to all the above. And it's a real shame I agree. I saw them supporting Olly Murs on his tour last year and it baffled me as to why they weren't doing a tour of that scale on their own. If they'd come along 10 years previously they'd have been on JLS scales of success by now at least. But all the faffing around with releases and then the label switching/dropping dramas really have killed off any momentum at all.
