I see the Irish GE is to be held on a Saturday this year, so that prompted the above question.

I have been arguing for elections to be held on a Sunday for many years. It would mean no schools having to close on polling day and the polls could probably close at 8pm instead of 10.

I can imagine the time change would be quite a problem, no matter how clear to tried to make it - lots of angry people turning up late, etc!

Agree totally.

I think there's a lot more about the election systen than just the day that needs change or at least an update

Very true, but a change to weekend voting is just about the only positive reform even vaguely possible under this government.

Why would the polls closing earlier be a good thing??

Yes a Sunday but no to polls closing later, there are still people working on Sundays. Although now I say that I've argued myself into making it Saturday and opening the way for a load of result parties.

People in NI would likely complain about a Sunday election for religious reasons 😴, all the better for keeping the Free Ps out I guess 😀.

Last time Ireland had a Saturday GE was in Dec 1918 when SF won 73 seats, I'd say they would take that this time again lol. They'd be happy with 20 seats this time!!

No doubt some people would complain on those grounds, but Italy is a far more religious country than the UK and they vote on Sundays.

Yes, there are people who work on Sunday, but how many of them would be unable to vote between 7am and 8pm? If absolutely necessary, they can vote by post - as, for that matter, can people who object to voting on Sunday.

Even Germany votes on a Sunday. A country where shops can open 6 sundays per annum and it’s against federal law to work on Sundays any other Sunday of the year (or every Sunday if you don’t work retail)

If we must make it a week day then it should be a mandatory public holiday

I'm surprised the EU allows that.

The EU doesn’t have any input on retail opening hours. Opening hours don’t have any relation to the integrity of the single market and so it’s outwith their competence

Brexiter in an "I didn't know the EU worked like that!" ignorance SHOCKER!

Are you arguing they *don't* seek to standardize everything?

They've been slowly grabbing more power over the years, imo Remainers either don't notice that, or choose to ignore it.

They seek to standardise where it affects the single market. That's how markets tend to work. OTOH, they make no attempt to set standards where they have no bearing on the operation of the single market. Seems simple enough to me.

But they never stop seeking to expand their powers - that's one of the main reasons I voted out!

How can they grab more power when they mainly deal with trade? It's standardisation of trade. That's it. It's funny how only brexiters and those of the authoritarian hard right on the continent have "noticed" this power grab! But it wasn't a power grab when the Brexshit lot started screaming for Ireland to leave the EU "to respect the vote!!" (The 50 50 vote lol).

Why do you still struggle with the concept of the veto? Why do you still not understand that "the EU" cannot do anything without going through a lengthy process involving all member states?
