Posted January 27, 20205 yr I've started from the 1940's, as the was when Labour had their first majority gov't. Obviously you may have to rely on your parents or even grandparents recollections somewhat...
January 27, 20205 yr 1990s Don't think we need to ask our grandparents. It's hard to overstate how badly the UK economy performed between 1940 and 1980 compared to Western Europe, South Korea, Japan, despite coming out of WW2 relatively unscathed.
January 27, 20205 yr Late 1990s up to the mid 2000s. That was when the economy was at its peak. The economy up until joining the EEC was in tatters and Thatcher's reign of terror did not help things. It wasn't until Labour got in that everyrhing really bloomed however. The Tories are unbelievably incompetent, as we've seen over the last ten years. That's what nepotism gets ya!

January 28, 20205 yr okay okay let's teach Michael a new word: cronyism. There, the Tories engage in cronyism, done. ~ On topic: 1997-2007 is probably the best period of 10 years in that timeframe.

I consider the neutering of the unions in the 1980's to have helped the economy too - IMO that's the *only* good thing that Thatcher did.

January 28, 20205 yr *looks around at the heavily unionised economy around me* yeah I don’t think that was the problem. I would firmly agree with Iz. The Labour administration of Blair up to the financial crash was the best period of economic growth in my life time for sure and arguably since WW2.
January 28, 20205 yr Author Why? To clarify - Why do I consider it the only good thing she did, or why do I think neutering the unions was a good thing?
January 28, 20205 yr To clarify - Why do I consider it the only good thing she did, or why do I think neutering the unions was a good thing? I'd like know why you think her treatment of the unions was a good thing?
January 29, 20205 yr Author I'd like know why you think her treatment of the unions was a good thing? Because they had been virtually holding the country to ransom in the 1970's - striking at the drop of a hat, demarcation disputes, Winter of Discontent etc. Strikes were even known as the 'British Disease'. These days France is having problems of a similar nature.
January 30, 20205 yr I would pick the 1945-67 period when the post war effort meant the economy improved alongside Keynesianism which lead to much greater equality, full employment and higher wages.

It's interesting to get different takes on the 70s. The older generations of my family are fairly split between relatively right and relatively left politically and I'm sure you can guess their opinions on Thatcher vary quite a lot. Edited January 30, 20205 yr by mald487
