Opposite of Adults, King, We No Speak Americano, Wish You Were Mine, Promesses all great tunes there, Pete.

Glad you're a fan - thanks Mack!

Ooh 'Chunky' what a forgotten gem *.* I love the video too!

It really is brilliant isn't it! Thanks Jade :D

This is another song I discovered from Chart Show TV when I was at Centre Parcs and hence another song that reminds me of one of my favourite holiday destinations. The music video is banging as well!

Rudimental's best song by quite a way, so of course it was never given a proper push :( Dance meets Caribbean influence to create an incredibly catchy song!

Disclosure

Confess To Me (ft. Jessie Ware) (2013)

-

Video

Commentary

Okay up until literally now I thought this was Disclosure's breakthrough hit but apparently it was just an album track, shows how clueless I am about the charts in the early part of the decade :') Anyway this is another brilliant dance banger complete with some great distorted vocals in the chorus which make this song so good.

JP Cooper

September Song (2016)

-

Video

Commentary

I first heard JP Cooper in Perfect Strangers, as most of us did. However, I discovered this song on someone's YouTube chart (back when nothing existed of it but a lyric video) and fell in love. About a month later, it appeared on a NOW CD and I was ecstatic (despite everyone else asking what the song even was). Cue it being one of the first Top 10 singles of 2017 and making me a very happy bunny, such a brilliant tropical pop track!

Tiesto vs. Diplo

C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise) (ft. Busta Rhymes) (2010)

-

Video

Commentary

And just missing out on the Top 40 is another sublime dance/rap collab (dance/rap really works so well together doesn't it ), this appeared on Addicted to Bass 2011 and I was addicted, it works better with the robotic 'ministry of sound' introduction at the start but this is still great and the fast-rap bit by Busta really blows the reat out the water.

  • Author

And as we get into the Top 40, just a quick rundown of what years we have left:

2010: 7 songs

2011: 4 songs

2012: 3 songs

2013: 5 songs

2014: 6 songs

2015: 5 songs

2016: 4 songs

2017: 3 songs

2018: 2 songs

2019: 1 song

2014 no longer leads the charge as it becomes clear that the start of the decade is clearly the most nostalgic for me! Another thing I actually hadn't noticed until now is that we haven't seen any songs from 2011 as of yet - how long will it be until we reach one?

(oh and the 6-5-4-3-2-1 for recent years is interesting as well!)

Owl City

Lucid Dream (2018)

-

Video

Commentary

I wasn't a massive fan of any of Owl City's output until his most recent output, and then suddenly his music clicked with me. This is the best from that album and the second-highest track from 2018 - it's just a brilliant mix of quiet bits and fun disco-ey bits that I don't think I've heard any other artist pull off this decade. It truly is a masterpiece

Fuse ODG

Antenna (2013)

-

Video

Commentary

This is definitely second-best of Fuse's output but this was a brilliant introduction to the Ghanaian musician and definitely has it's merits, the best of a lot of songs I downloaded around the end of 2013.

PSY

Gangnam Style (2012)

-

Video

Commentary

This was my Mainstream song of 2012, however only the third highest from that year here (mainly because the other two didn't get anywhere near the charts). I remember being delighted this was out as I'd literally listened to no new music in 2012 and had to scramble to find a Song of the Year and this was a very convenient song to pick. Plus it's a tune.

Far East Movement

Like a G6 (ft. The Cataracts & Dev) (2010)

-

Video

Commentary

Even I'm surprised this was 2010 :o It feels a lot more recent! Anyway this was another song that Radio Aire gifted me and I listened to it non-stop for way too long. And apparently a G6 is a plane for anyone who didn't know.

Clean Bandit

Stronger (2014)

-

Video

Commentary

The second third highest Clean Bandit track and the highest of their successful songs, this was Clean Bandit at their best, an absolute dance banger which outclasses all their #1s for me! Although it hasn't held up as well as one of their other songs...

Chromeo

Jealous (I Ain't With It) (2014)

-

Video

Another one I discovered thanks to Radio 2, this was indie-pop at it's best, such a funky track with some fab vocals and a nice groovy beat. And of course it ended up in BJSC but that was just coincidence.

Kygo

Firestone (ft. Conrad Sewell) (2015)

-

Video

Commentary

I remember being in the car in early 2015, listening to Radio 1, where some boring slow song was playing and I was switching off. Then suddenly a fantastic tropical melody started playing and my ears suddenly perked up again; so much that I decided to Shazam the song to find it was Firestone by Kygo. Of course I completely forgot about it until I was scrolling through the Top 100 playing songs I didn't know and stumbled across it again. The rest is history, it's a flawless piece of music and deserved all the success it got!

-

Video

Commentary

Okay forget what I said about him being a one-hit wonder I'd forgotten about this (but he still hasn't released owt good since All A Dream). This dance/rap collab (I love them you know) works so well it genuinely sounds like it was the original track and actually makes the original seem quite disappointing. (and let's just breeze over the fact that Wretch 32 is at #32)

The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?) (2013)

-

Video

Commentary

So we say a fond farewell to 2013 (actually not fond, I hated that year) with the song which was my mainstream #1 back then and is still the highest entry from 2013 (from the end of the year of course, when things were getting a little better). This is such a wacky random song and certainly deserved to be more of a hit than what it was, and of course I know all the lyrics (including the random noises).

'Like A G6' is an absolute bop *.* Far East Movement and Dev each had some other bangers too but this one will always be special. 'Gangnam Style' is obviously amaze too, were you not able to witness its world domination at the time? :o

gangnam style was my eoy #1 that year and will also be making an appearance in my eod top 40

confess to me was one of my faves off that album, it made my eoy then too but isn't in my eod

firestone remains kygo's best ever too and will be in my eod top 100

also like booyah, september song, c'mon, dr who [although boneless was a lot better for me from tujamo], like a g6, stronger [though not a standout of theirs imo], the fox

Fedde Le Grand

Running (2011)

-

Video

Commentary

Who on earth are all the featured artists on this song? They weren't there back when I knew this song on Running Trax 3. This is a proper dance banger though, although I'm not sure what the music video is portraying, a guy on a treadmill with a noose round his head doesn't particularly inspire me to get out there and start burning any calories  Anyway, this reminds me of listening to music on my iPod in the back of my grandparents' car, although why I had headphones in in someone else's car I have no idea.

Clean Bandit

Telephone Banking (ft. Love Ssega) (2014)

-

Video

Commentary

Okay forget what I said about Stronger being the second highest Clean Bandit song, there's still one to come after this that I completely forgot about oops. This is an absolute tune though, the absolute peak of classical-robotic music with fantastic vocals from Love Ssega (who apparently was a member of the band at some point but when he left they just seemed to pretend he was a featured artist on a load of their songs). And it's a song about Japan and acquiring schools, what more do you want?

If you've not heard this song, you NEED to! Not only is it a brilliant tune, it had fabulous lyrics such as 'if you put all her clothes in a line we could reach Sweden', plus the bridge listing various shops in a robotic-y female voice. I know all the lyrics to this and I'm not ashamed.

We get to the highest song from last year, now it's well out of my Personal Chart I can actually enjoy this a lot more again, it's a real tune and the epitome of indie music from this decade. Probably would have been a bit higher had it been released in the middle of the decade but that's how these things go.

Declan McKenna

SeeB

What Do You Love? (ft. Jacob Banks) (2016)

-

Video

Commentary

This only got to #20 in my EOY but that was definitely partly down to the fact it only topped my chart in December and has been growing on me ever since. It's the perfect winter warmer of a song, tropical house at it's finest and Jacob's voice just works so well with the song.

The highest song from 2011 now, this was never the best of songs but I definitely went along with the Year 6 hype train for it, with everyone randomly singing 'every day I'm shuffling' until I knew what the song was. Fond memories.

This was my Mainstream Song of 2014 back in the day but falls to the 5th highest 2014 song now. I was actually introduced to this song by my dad because of how odd it is, the music video is certainly weird but it is a tune and certainly resembles the genre climate it was in in the absolute best way. DIBBY SOUND!

Avicii

Friend Of Mine (ft. Vargas & Lagola) (2017)

-

Video

Commentary

This finished surprisingly low in my EOY but has held its ground here, it's also the highest Avicii song in the countdown. This was the first song I heard from the Avici (01) EP and was by far the best song from that, it is just Avicii at his absolute best and one of the many amazing songs I will remember him by.

Wavin' Flag (2010)

-

Commentary

This song holds such a special place in my heart. Before 2010 I wasn't into football at all, but my primary school just got so into the spirit of it all, we learnt about all the countries, collected Panini stickers as a class and even had laminated flags to show what stage we were currently at in the game. And we all sung this amazing song. I now really enjoy watching the World Cup and this song is a real trailblazer for the diversity that it brings.

Clean Bandit

Come Over (ft. Stylo G) (2014)

-

Commentary

Now this is the actual highest Clean Bandit song :magic: Stylo G's voice is genuinely brilliant and sticking it on a dance song was a genius move. So of course it peaked outside the Top 40  You don't know the number of times I watched the UK Hot 40 on 4Music and they would announce there was a new #1 and I would get all excited that it might be this... albeit not.

I sort-of remember this from Eurovision and that's the reason I downloaded it on my Eurovision download spree back in the day, and from then it's just continued to rise in my rankings. It really reminds me of my caravan holidays in Anglesey where I randomly stuck my Eurovision playlist on, I can even envisage leaving the caravan site with it on now (sadly we don't have a caravan any more :() I can even remember the point at which the iTunes 30-second clip starts so I must have listened to it on there a lot as well!

Up until now I thought it was spelled 'Zalileh' oops (that's what they're singing anyway). As is usual with my eventual Eurovision faves, I wasn't that enamoured by it on first listen (Mandinga, everyday, Mandinga, Zaleilah! isn't exactly the most lyrically lovely start) but it soon grew on me and is the highest Eurovision song in my countdown.

My 2017 #1 now, listening to this makes me feel so sad now. This was my anthem when I was 17, wanting to freeze time before I became an adult - it was the last song I listened to before my 18th birthday. Now I'm 20 and I wish I was younger again, I'm so old

This was my Mainstream Song of 2010 (however not the highest chart hit from 2010!), this is the first song I remember being genuinely obsessed with. Anyway, here are the years still in contention as we go into the Top 10:

2010: 1 song

2012: 1 song

2014: 3 songs

2015: 3 songs

2016: 2 songs

But which year/song will come out on top?

I was also disappointed in 'Come Over' missing the top 40, it's a much more extraordinary song than 'Extraordinary' itself :(

Gangnam Style & The Fox are easily the 2 best novelty hits in the UK this past decade. I'm not sure we'll ever see a song take over the world in the same way Gangnam Style did again.

Wavin' Flag is my favourite song you've mentioned so far though. Easily one of my favourite songs of all-time. It's so uplifting and the perfect choice for a World Cup song. The best thing Coca Cola have ever been involved in

We kick of my Top 10 with the song that really got me into Walk Off the Earth and is easily their best song. It is the perfect mix of indie and pop, with brilliant instrumentals, great vocals and an inventive music video as well. Sadly the band lost their bearded pianist Mike Taylor last year and he is very sorely missed :( It is only right therefore that this manages to hit the Top 10 in my EOD.

Speeding Cars (2015)

Video

Commentary

It's taken us 90 songs to get from the first Walking On Cars song to the second, but this truly does deserve to be so high. I didn't really notice it when it was a hit, but once I finally paid attention to it in mid-2016 it very quickly became a song I couldn't put down. It's a musical masterpiece and every syllable he sings just completely works, I just want to sing the whole song out loud and it is by far the best song of its genre this decade
