I could seriously watch an entire episode of just Shirley and Jean

Jean and Shirley are wonderful together. Shirley works much better this way than she does with her family.

I’m not too happy with the Lola/Peter development. I wasn’t watching when they were a thing but I don’t recall them being any kind of great love story.

 

I get they want to show Lola’s reluctance to be a mother again-it was awful for her the first time. And I get that it’s important to show abortions go ahead as they do every day. But Jay and Lola were the best chance to show a couple wanting a child and getting a child, something that rarely seems to happen.

Very hard to watch tonight’s second episode but really had some powerful scenes.

 

Shona smashed it tonight in both episodes. When she gets the right material that isn’t love triangles she shines!! This is the sort of thing I’ve wanted from her for years tbh. The hunger strike story too also makes me wonder how powerful a Whitney eating disorder story could be but she was brilliant tonight.

 

And Jessica and Toby are playing Chantelle and Gray so well!

 

The fact Gray is attractive, and to nearly everyone else a hero makes it all the more interesting like with Trevor I think almost everyone hated him (like the other characters). :lol: I so knew where that scene with Mitch was headed though that’s what made all the more awful Chantelle actually stood up for him in that very episode. When this all comes out Karen is gonna cause him more damage than Mitch! I keep thinking how this will end and I’m honestly feeling it could genuinely end in Chantelle dying.

 

This really is just continuing to be incredible viewing though. The entire cast are smashing it right now. If this doesn’t sweep the soap awards I’ll RIOT.

Shona gave a good performance as always but it's hard to appreciate that when the material is so ugly and pointless. I'm so sick of seeing Whitney constantly being victimised, it's just misery porn at this point and I'd rather Shona left the show if this is all they can come up with. I appreciate that what Whitney went through as a child is going to stick with her for life but this is an entertainment show and Whitney needs to exist in her own right without every storyline revolving around her past trauma. It's so draining to watch and it reeks of misogyny.

 

The production on the second episode was.... a choice. Atomic Kitten leading up to the duff duff - the song itself was so jarring with the story and to play it over a character collapsed on the floor was just weird and embarrassing.

I actually thought the song used was a great choice. It was a huge hit when Whitney would have been 12, so certainly a song that would have appealed to her, and Tony would believably have heard it/known it well. The lyrical content is pretty haunting in context: “baby you’re the one, you still turn me on”. It’s a pure-pop romantic song, yet for Whitney it’ll have awful connotations.

I know it’s common for soaps to age characters but I thought Whitney was 15 when she joined in 2008 making her 26/27 now? Whole Again was a hit in 2001 so that would put Whitney in her early 30s instead? Maybe it was just a favourite song of hers (ruined by what happened) or one she associates with that time...

It could easily be explained that Tony used to sing that to Whitney when she was even younger than 15 which of course would add to the creepy undertone. But I don’t think anything like that has been explained.

 

In terms of EE, Whole Again always reminds me of Who Shot Phil.

The Sun has reported that Mick and Linda are indeed leaving The Vic (yes I know it's the Sun but they actually always seem to be correct when it comes to the soaps).

I’ve made the Maria comparison before. I think both characters could be written better and similarly they usually get stories related to their love life and nothing else. But with Whitney I do feel for her and I think Shona is smashing it in her current storyline.

Loving Denise having all these supporting scenes. Lola, Keegan, now Sharon. She deserves to lead her own storyline but, in the meantime, she brings so much heart and depth with these scenes, lots to be told just by the expressions on her face.

EastEnders filming has been postponed and the show will only air Monday and Tuesday as a result to keep the flow of episodes coming. Takes place from immediate effect.
