Have they not announced they are close to reaching heard immunity in Stockholm which would mean the peak has been and gone with a second wave not likely.

1,000 deaths in population of 2 million is a 0.0005% death rate.

I’m failing to see your argument on that point.

Sweden has only 20k positive tests

Their prediction is that 26% of inhabitants in stockholm will have been infected by may 1st. Far from herd immunity

I assume they will review on Thursday then announce on Monday 11th taking us to 1st June.

Which would then be 10 full weeks of lockdown by that point.

I have read conflicting articles so not going to go back and forth on this as it is boring now.

Show us your sources then.

(We're not even "going back and forth" we're literally having a discussion, which is the whole purpose of a forum)

The thing is we still don't know whether contracting the virus offers long-term immunity so the point about "herd immunity" is a bit of a moot point?

We also don't know how many are asymptomatic, therefore we also don't know how many people have had the virus and are likely to be immune in the shorter term. Most things remain unknown, but what is known is that the death rate in Germany looks low and in Sweden appears to be similar to areas that locked down suggesting the benefits of a lockdown are less clear in areas with a low density in population and proportional, functioning healthcare system (as in well prepared, not cut and underfunded like the NHS/Social Care system). The UK never overwhelmed its healthcare system but it likely would have without the lockdown in place and created an even worse crisis with a death toll far exceeding the one we currently have.

From what I'm reading it looks like extension of current conditions u til 1st June and only thing to be relaxed is opening of small shops and people returning to work if safe to do so.

Hopefully after that point we can go to see friends and family again.

^Closing the borders /shutting down flights just doesn't work when you have a virus so infectious and are in the stage of community spread (which the UK has been at since the beginning of March)

Would have worked very early on though instead of what happened, which was that the government just let people go to northern Italy and then come back with the virus. But now yes it would be pointless unless its like New Zealand or South Korea where they have nearly all got rid of community spread.

I am lucky because I am living with my parents at the moment and also I do miss meeting up with my friends a bit but not enough to want to put myself and particularly my parents at risk of getting the virus. Therefore the easing of the lockdown won't affect me, and I will be continuing the lockdown.

Its down to personal risk as to how much people want to put themselves at risk after the lockdown. Every person for themselves now.

What are you planning to do long term then if a vaccine doesn’t happen will you never meet up with friends again?

Do you have a job?

I am just curious as to the mindset of people who are saying they will never socialise again.

It looks likely it will be extended to 1st June.

It is quite frustrating that we are told ‘3 week lockdowns’ which are technically 3.5 weeks by the time they get round to making the next announcement.

I agree and surely some people will ignore it as they see it being technically over and disobey lockdown rules over the weekend lol. It makes no sense.

Unless they make a interim announcement.

People have been flouting them for ages and chances are over May, more and more people will flout them as fatigue kicks in. At this stage there isn't too much more we can do except try our best and hooe the majority stick to the rules.

An extension of lockdown is more about biding time until the app is ready to go live and we potentially have anti-body testing. An extension to 1st June would get us past the Bank Holidays and to a similar stage where Italy and Spain are now at, at which point I think we would gradually begin re-opening up.

The guidance is shambolic, each European country has specific dates and I fail to see why the UK can’t do this also.

I am just really hoping for a vaccine by the end of the year, an effective antiviral drug that reduces death risk. I would go to an non essential venue after lockdown only if everyone was tested before entering a building which would be unlikely as the logistics would be difficult and it would require an instant test.

I just know I am certainly not putting my parents lives at risk as one of them has an underlying health condition (diabetes). Luckily one of them has a job which doesn't require any face to face social interaction. I did work part time and unfortunately I lost my job recently as a result of the lockdown. I will look for another job but it probably will have to be something where I can work from home.

I have read they also don’t want to release restrictions before Ramadan, which given the view on BAME individuals being most at risk probably makes sense as there would be family gatherings for Eid. Though you could argue these families will still meet anyway.

If throughout May the European countries open up and there is no mass second wave then I don’t see how the government can justify this going on in its current form beyond June 1st.

I’m feeling a bit better today as I know April is now over but we have another exhausting month ahead.

I would say unfortunately quite a high proportion of young people without health conditions especially wouldn't be worried about getting the virus. Would be interesting if there was a survey to show what proportion of under 40s wouldn't be worried about getting the virus, I would expect the percentage to be nearly half myself.

I just have concerns about your state of mind long term I know you may be ok now but to do this for months and months on end you may not be.

To give you a sample size I work in a team of 140 mostly under 40 and I’ve not heard one of them healthy say they will ruin their lives for the foreseeable staying inside for a virus with such low risk to the age group and likewise with anyone else in this age group that I know this covering both Scotland and England
