Breathing Underwater is stunning, I'd go as far as to say it's her best ballad!

Free's lack of success was a bit baffling, especially since it went top 10 in Ireland and was a massive top 5 in Australia, going 4x Platinum there

Next To Me will probably always be my fave, great to see it this high  Glad to see Wonder above Lifted as well!

Hurts is amazing and honestly iconic for trying to frantically clap your hands during the verses.

Clown and My Kind Of Love are gorgeous

You Are Not Alone

Released: 2019

UK Charts Peak: N/A

This was that much of a smash single that it didn't even get any artwork; we love to see it. You Are Not Alone served as the third 'single' from REAL LIFE, Emeli's third album. While it obviously didn't receive the same single treatment or promotion that her other singles have, it's still up there with the best. Her team had probably abandoned all hope of any song from the album becoming a hit following the non-presence of Sparrow and Extraordinary Being anywhere in the charts. However, of the song itself, this is so beautiful, so emotional and so inspiring. At a time when I really needed to hear lyrics like these to push me through and help me feel better, they did just that and I cannot commend Emeli enough for the way that she has been able to use her songwriting throughout this era - it's truly remarkable just how powerful her words are, and I'm sure they'll continue to have such a positive impact for years to come.

Highs & Lows

Released: 7 March 2017

UK Charts Peak: N/A

Highs & Lows, the third and final single to be released from Emeli's second album Long Live the Angels, is another criminally underrated song that didn't perform well at all in the charts. The only chart data that I was able to source for this was for Belgium - so I'm assuming it had absolutely no impact whatsoever in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter. In terms of the actual song though, this is such a highlight from her second album, and from her singles discography in general. It's feel-good, it's Emeli at her best, and she puts the message she wants to convey across perfectly. The one thing I'll always find awkward about this though is her attempt at dancing on tour when performing this - the awkward hand movements to suggest 'high', 'low' and 'side' certainly were... something lmao. I love the music video for this too though, because it doesn't just jump straight into the action - we have a beautiful acoustic version of the song played on the piano first, and then it all kicks up a gear.

Heaven

Released: 12 August 2011

UK Charts Peak: 02

Released in the late summer of 2011, Emeli embarked on her singles campaign for Our Version of Events, an album that would become known worldwide for its longevity, its many singles, its way of bringing Emeli into every person's home (be that through television, radio, or any other means - maybe she was also hiding in everyone's living rooms at the time too?), but most of all for the general public and non-rabid-fans, Heaven is probably the biggest reminder of that era. Her debut single managed to reach #2 in the UK charts, and the single is probably regarded as one of her best, or even still her best, to this day. For me, it's been a massive slow burner - I've not always loved it, but over the years it has worked its way into my heart and I now consider it one of her absolute best. It absolutely pops when hearing and seeing her performing it on tour, and you can tell just how close she holds it to her own heart too.

Read All About It

Professor Green feat. Emeli Sandé

Released: 21 October 2011

UK Charts Peak: 01

Just missing out on the top spot (and not even too far ahead of Heaven either, really) is Read All About It, Emeli's collaboration with Professor Green. The original version of this, despite how many 'parts' there are will forever be my favourite version of this song. Released just two months after Heaven, this song really made me get on board with Emeli (and for a while appreciate Professor Green's music too, but that's a different story). I started to really warm to her as a vocalist, and follow her journey because this was where she was starting out really. Her vocals on this just sound so incredible - there's something chilled out about it all, but at the same time you can tell they're singing for their lives about something so deeply personal. Then, of course, for Our Version of Events Emeli recorded her own version of the song: Read All About It, Pt. III, a beautiful ballad rendition of this song with alterations to the verses too. This is how you do a collaboration that doesn't age a day nine years down the line.

Shine

Released: 2019

UK Charts Peak: N/A

And the winner of the countdown, the song crowned Calum's favourite Emeli Sandé single is... Shine. Shine was the third single to be released from Emeli's third album REAL LIFE, and the only one besides lead single Sparrow to be given a push (with artwork too!). The music video for this is a beautiful journey - fun fact: her sister appears in the music video for this. Shine, for me though, is the definition of everything that Emeli stands for as an artist, what her songwriting stands for, and what we as humans should strive to live for. Shine's lyrics are some of the most open and honest, really reaching out and encouraging people to be open, loving, accepting and letting all the love that's inside them shine through and allow them to be the best possible versions of themselves. Unfortunately the song failed to chart anywhere because that's just what happened with all of the singles from REAL LIFE, but what can you do? It would have been nice to see her have a little commercial success with what I'd consider to be her finest work to date that she's going to have difficulty topping.

oh I don't know that number 1 oops, I do quite like the original Read All About It, but I got so sick of the Part II one lmao

Thanks for doing this anyway!

Well this was a good way to get me to finally listen to Emeli's more recent singles that I hadn't listened to yet! Shine does live up to its name, sounded very catchy and uplifting

Thanks everybody for commenting along the way even if you've not been familiar with her music (hopefully you'll have got a discovery or two out of it!)! :cheeseblock:

Fabulous effort with this anyway Calum

It certainly takes a certain strength to be able to listen to 23 Emeli Sandé songs :frankie:

Loved seeing your opinion on these!

Would it be too controversial to say I hated “Free”? It was just boring compared to Rudimental’s output at the time
