Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of "Spinning Around", the start of the "Light Years" era. Time flies ever so fast! @___∆___ @SmileyKylie @Delicate @Jessie Where @BREAKTHETENSION

Happy 23rd to ‘Spinning Around’ - the song that returned Kylie to her pop roots and restored her chart glory.

This was in the days before midweeks were readily available, I remember going to buy all the versions in the late afternoon on the day of release and the guy at Virgin Megastore said he was sure it was going to be #1 based on how many they had sold that day.

That was was such a huge time. I was so nervous on release week until the mids came through and kylie going number 1 was such a huge moment, far from her best single but a huge turning point in her career.
Such an exciting time when she came thundering back with Spinning around. Esp with on a night like this :drama:
It was just something else and i can remember it all so well, i do get some of that feeling with padam padam but spinning around going number 1 was a very special time as was light years as the album was just great and cemented kylies return to the top of the charts.

One of my favourites - perhaps my fave of her #1s! I know it wasn't, but it just feels like it was made for her with its reinvention lyrical theme and pop-disco sound. It's hard to imagine this being anything other than a hugely successful comeback. Presumably it was understood it was going to be a hit at the time, but were people expecting it to go all the way to #1?

Shout out to the B-side 'Paper Dolls' which is really sweet:

Its other B-side 'Cover Me With Kisses' is catchy too, feels like it comes from the same sessions as 'Password' and 'Loveboat':

No I think after the time they wanted a hit or even get her back in the top 5 but leading up to the release particularly the week before it was widely expected that Girl Thing would go number 1 with last one standing so tgat ending up st 8 was a big shock.

Paper dolls is brilliant and I much prefer it to spinning around. This was yet another time when it was brilliant to be a kylie fan.

Ah yes, I remember seeing Girl Thing were predicted to go to #1 but I didn't realise they released the same week as Kylie. Just reading a little up about them now, apparently they pre-recorded an interview with Radio 1 that celebrated them getting to #1!

Yes them going number 1 was pretty much printed before the release so I'm sure they were gutted ending up at 8 and at that time never expected kylie to be even a slight threat.

THEY DIDN'T!?!?

I am kind of glad they flopped on their arse it just proved that Spice Girls had something special and not just any random mix of girls could repeat the success which is what Simon thought would happen.

Although that story is funny and a real footnote in pop history, I do feel immensely bad for the girls involved! It wasn't really their fault and that can't have been easy for them.

I remember it was a real :o moment when it entered at #8.

It was almost a guarantee that they would enter at #1 - they done the single launch to massive press attendance at the Eiffel Tower, such a shame that as soon as it ‘only’ reached #8 the label basically dropped them on their arse, they had a #25 follow up but without all the promo fanfare and the album was scrapped (although we eventually got it on streaming).

I do to as it must have a very tough on them and they were flung away like garbage.

Butterfly just came on shuffle! One of Kylie's best album tracks of all time. So much better than Please Stay!

I've always been a fan of butterfly and I actually prefer it to all the singles from the album and not just please stay.

I do like please stay but always felt there was better options for 4th single, disco down for example I always felt was right for that time of year.

In hindsight I really agree, it's a real non-entity single in her discography I always forget exists.

These days I'm thinking I'd have preferred 'Disco Down' as the 4th single, but then it did give her a top 10 hit so maybe not worth risking a break in that run she had?

Please stay to be fair did its job by going top 10 but maybe im wrong i think disco down would have managed to do it aswell, who would have ever thought that the b side of the singles would go on to be one of her biggest selling songs,
