Wonder what drama will happen next round in our daily edition of AF idol!
Still charted here and had a video but ok :) just wanted to point it out, not cause a war over it

It charted here as an instant grat, and we could spend all evening naming non-singles with videos. We debated it and came to a conclusion.

Tbh I remember 'Open Wide' being panned in the chart thread at the time (despite liking it myself :kink:) - 'Hype' is probably a better choice anyway

I just think a single is a single and it seems unfair to exclude things for geographical reasons! Fair enough though x

It doesn't matter whether it was a single in the UK, Australia, US, Canada... one Urban station in the US playing it does not make it a single. As Joseph said it was likely pushed to radio alongside 'Outside' to attract a wider audience. Pretty sure it happens a fair bit in the US (artists pushing different songs from the album to different radio stations to attract different audiences). It charted in the UK due to being an instant grat. It wasn't fully pushed as a single anywhere. Promo singles/Instant grats were ignored. Sorry! :(

It wasn't "geographical reasons". It wasn't a full single... anywhere?

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say

“Open Wide" is a song by Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris from his fourth studio album, Motion (2014). It features American rapper Big Sean. Originally released a promotional single on 27 October 2014, the song officially impacted rhythmic contemporary radio in the United States on 27 January 2015 as the album's fifth single. "Open Wide" is the vocal version of Harris's instrumental track "C.U.B.A", which appears as a B-side to his single "Blame".[1] It peaked at number 23 in the UK, becoming Harris's first single to miss the top 10 since 2010.

I don’t imagine the song would’ve done a whole lot better in this round but I think it should’ve been allowed at least on the basis that it got about the same amount of promotion as Hype.

Rudebox is still incredible *.*

but why is everybody voting in 5 nanoseconds?

shouldn't we all give these songs a chance even if they're bad? there might be a grower or 2 in there? :D

Speaking for myself I am very much involved and find out what song is going to be considered/picked up in most of the forums. All I need is to listen to songs once and make a decision on my rankings!!!

Some songs like the GA one were only pushed in the UK, should that be excluded?

All of GA's singles were only pushed in the UK. They would have to be excluded!

I'm just going to add the following.

Open Wide was only pushed to one radio format in the US (presumably while Outside impacted mainstream radio)
I can confirm this. After "Blame", Columbia did a split release in the US, being the first (and only) for Calvin so far. "Outside" impacted Top 40/Mainstream radio and "Open Wide" impacted Top 40/Rhythmic radio. However, the latter got unsolicited Top 40/Mainstream airplay too, reaching the Top 60 in the Top 40/Mainstream published update.

one Urban station in the US playing it does not make it a single.
FYI, 46 Top 40/Rhythmic radio stations added the track. Also, Top 40/Rhythmic ≠ Urban because both of them are different radio formats in the US. I'm not sure how many radio stations were in the Top 40/Rhythmic panel back in 2015, but I assume it's around 70 nowadays.

Also, I think that if we're going with the basis that a US radio format doesn't make a song a single, I guess we can't consider "Get Me Bodied" by Beyoncé and "Loveeeeeee Song" and "Birthday Cake" (Remix), both by Rihanna, as singles either because all of these three songs were only pushed as singles to Top 40/Rhythmic or Urban radio, but not to Top 40/Mainstream radio.
