June 2, 20205 yr Author ^Pretty much exactly that. It's an easy way to tap into social media culture to actively harm and hinder the sharing of events, and it appears to have been started by music industry companies for other reasons. if people were actually using it to get black voices onto their page then sure, fine, but it just damages the efficacy of the movement just posting black squares (no offense our blacksquare x)
June 2, 20205 yr I'm despairing at the fact people are posting these black squares and then continuing to post their usual content??? Like, even they don't know what the point of it is.
June 2, 20205 yr Not even clicking on that video. Have a different take, but Katie f***ing Hopkins? No ma'am Edited June 2, 20205 yr by Andrew.
June 2, 20205 yr Katie Hopkins is honestly one of the most and utterly vile people I have ever come accross. I am definitely not one for slagging people off online, especially not people I don't know, but for her I will make an exception. She also posted something a few days ago about 'how she is not social distancing' and wrote the #bml hashtag just for 'lol' (in her words). How can you be so? Like honestly?

I used to think she wasn't as extreme as she said (I kind of liked her as a joke when she was known for the whole kids name stuff, as snobby as that was it was funny) but that YouTube prank shocked me, disgusting. She used to VERY OCCASIONALLY make a smidgeon of a point but she uses such hateful language and has gone full fash.
June 2, 20205 yr I would never wish death upon anybody ...but I genuinely wouldn’t give a flying toss if she was casually ejected into space
June 2, 20205 yr Re: the blackout "trend", I've seen so many people who haven't uttered a peep about this entire thing doing it and it's almost like it's for aesthetic - "look my black feed is so pretty <3" :drama: I did it on Instagram but I posted a donation link, the whole point is to silence yourself from other things and amplify black voices so the important stuff comes through. If you're just filling the #blacklivesmatter hashtag with a black square as I've seen some people doing, you are doing nothing but stifling the actual stuff which is counter-productive.

Me too, it was naivety really but part of me used to think that she was going to come out one day and be some kind of elaborate character but unfortunately there are people in the word who are that hateful and full on disgusting. I would never wish death upon anybody ...but I genuinely wouldn’t give a flying toss if she was casually ejected into space mooood
June 2, 20205 yr What was the YouTube prank? These guys pretended they were holding some kind of free speech awards conference and she was getting a prize, anyway she fell for it and flew to Prague and got up and made a speech with the most disgusting things about Muslims and other minorities she’s ever said, it’s actually quite a shocking watch. eRIdtMlqwNA
June 2, 20205 yr I think a good few years ago Katie just came across as ‘that person that says what people are thinking but won’t say’ with namegate and so on and so she was good tv for a lot of shows. Now she just spurts out OTT hate wherever she can when most shows won’t touch her and I do question if these are her beliefs or whether she’s just an attention seeker and will say what she can to keep herself in the limelight. Either way, she’s truly a terrible person. It’s only in the last five years I’ve noticed her being outright racist, maybe she always was.

If you're just filling the #blacklivesmatter hashtag with a black square as I've seen some people doing, you are doing nothing but stifling the actual stuff which is counter-productive. Exactly this! People don't realise what the point of it is meant to be nor how counter-productive it can be. I totally understand that for most people it is coming with the best intentions, so I've respectfully pointed out how these posts are indirectly denying the very thing they claim to be supporting. It just an empty gesture if you're only going to repost a black square and think you've done your bit and have made such a great sacrifice by not posting any regular content. Like, no one gives a f*** if Emily on Instagram doesn't share a photo of her Starbucks coffee.
June 2, 20205 yr I posted a square but with a donation/petition link, thankfully most people on my story seem to not just be posting the square and having some kind of message along with it. I think a good few years ago Katie just came across as ‘that person that says what people are thinking but won’t say’ with namegate and so on and so she was good tv for a lot of shows. I think the fat people stuff got old and work was drying up so she suddenly became this increasingly right wing political commentator on the likes of Fox News getting more and more extreme, now I don't think even they touch her. As I said, she occasionally made a point and I agreed with her a bit on tougher measures on terrorism but the hateful language she uses is just awful, that awful 'final solution' tweet at the time of the Manchester attack I think rendered her unemployable and I haven't seen her on anything since CBB.
June 2, 20205 yr Oh Katie Hopkins can just knock off. She's an idiot, file her under with Lennon Yaxley and Joseph Paul Watson etc. - all people who are ironically large "truth spreaders" but the reality is the are puppets of the Nu-Right ideology who use them to spread their messages. And unfortunately it's crazy how many people fall for their comments just because they are a social media influencer. Don't even get me started with the Blackout Tuesday. I try not to follow bandwagons and I understand it is done with the very best intentions, but a large people reposting this sort of stuff are doing it because everyone else is doing it and yes I've seen an examples of my followers etc. posting a picture, then 30 minutes later posting a story in a bikini trying to enjoy the last few days of the sun. It's a byproduct of social media band wagoning.
June 2, 20205 yr I do think some people don't mean to be getting on the bandwagon and just want to show their support but don't know how.its important in times like these that when people are showing they want to support, to educate them and tell them how they could support further rather than making them feel small and ostracisizing them further, making them feel small and not want to get involved and help further on down the line. Saying that, I commented on Jessica Cunningham of Apprentices fame post saying it's great she supports but she also follows and supports Katie Hopkins so if she could unfollow and mute that could help and she then went on to block me, remove comments and delete my comment and continue to follow and support Katie. I like to see the best in people and believe they aren't all quite like that though.
June 2, 20205 yr When has this become about some washed up reality TV personality (I almost choked typing this word)? She can f*** off who cares
June 2, 20205 yr When has this become about some washed up reality TV personality (I almost choked typing this word)? She can f*** off who cares It's not ABOUT her as such, it's more to just make people aware of the vile hatred she incites on to people and unfortunately she has a large platform so people need to be aware to mute/unfollow.
June 2, 20205 yr It's not ABOUT her as such, it's more to just make people aware of the vile hatred she incites on to people and unfortunately she has a large platform so people need to be aware to mute/unfollow. I understand but the acknowledgement that she exists fuels her relevancy (or whatever remains of it) even further.

Absolutely, I've been very mindful of this when pointing out to friends what effect these black square posts have. The key is to encourage conversation so to shut down other people's attempts at showing support would be just as counter-productive. People are going to make mistakes. People are going to be a bit clumsy. What's important is that people are willing to learn and they should feel comfortable in asking questions.
