August 14, 20205 yr Think we're getting our pop queens mixed up here, I think the "anything of note" comment was directed at Madonna not Miley - although your response is still valid for Madonna! Yeh I was talking about Madonna
August 14, 20205 yr How influential for a song's chart performance is being on the Radio 1 playlist and more specifically the A-List nowadays? I remember years ago being on the A-List of Radio 1 would practically guarantee a top 10 hit.
August 14, 20205 yr Seems I was right about Jason’s Savage Love; they kept it on the B-List for as long as possible then chucked it off when they wanted to! Good! Not so much Laxed - Siren Beat as Axed - Siren Beat

I’d say R1 playlist has little influence on the chart these days, it’s all about Spotify (and other streaming services to a lesser extent) playlisting and has been for years.

I don't think a song really feels like a single until I've heard it on daytime radio. Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to the modern equivalent of a b-side when I play something by a well-known act that clearly isn't going to do anything or get much airplay. I really do miss the days when almost everything R1 playlisted went Top 40. There are like 90 tracks on New Music Friday every week and it can get very overwhelming. I find the tunes that stay with me are generally ones R1 get behind (these tend to be the most anthemic and memorable ones), even though I try to give other things a chance. This is why I'm so glad I started my personal chart in Jan 2019, it helps me make sense of things and work out what I actually like as opposed to what I'm trying to like. The more streams I give something, the more I clearly enjoy it. I definitely don't remember walking into Our Price and being met with 90 new singles on a Monday teatime! But yeah, none of this probably addresses your point. Songs definitely sound more exciting on daytime R1 and even R2 if we're talking Kylie etc though. It's probably a combination of all the compression and other audio processing they use, the jingles, presenters hyping everything up and the fact I know millions of people across the country are also tuned in. A Foals song that misses the Top 100 can feel huge, for instance. It just feels communal in a way hopping on Spotify doesn't. I'm still yet to slam on Hot Hits or any of those playlists. Don't see the point. I can just listen to my personal chart playlist (which my new music playlist feeds into) and enjoy almost everything! Little example: those Tekashi 6nine songs that chart so highly don't feel like hits to me as I don't hear them anywhere. Also, the ones I have given a try are bloody awful. August 15, 20205 yr ^That's a great post, I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I definitely miss the days when singles were singles.

This is why I think there is an argument for adding radio airplay to the charts now. It would make it more of a singles chart again. Just my opinion, I know all the chart loyalists won’t agree.
