I suppose it's the idea that they're not puppets and they're not going to make music like "that" anymore, even though they are making music like the stuff they refer to in the song? Feels forced for the sake of fake controversy.

As it has already been pointed out in another post, the song isn't saying they are never going to release songs like that ever again. It's just saying that this song is not a pop song about those things because even thought that's all people expect out of them, they sometimes like to step out of that box. Historically, people look at girl groups as "guilty pleasures" - only good for upbeat/cheesy pop songs about boys/relationships. And while Little Mix can do that (and usually do it pretty well) that's not all they can do. So if you're looking for that, thats not what this song is.

Sorry I didn't read the entire thread hun but thank you for explaining it to me because I was really struggling with the concept xx

I am a bit disappointed by this, but I'm glad it's just an album track. The content is very tongue in cheek, but feels a bit beneath them at this point? Plus "LM5" was great and everything they've released since then has felt a bit "not their best" so maybe "Simon" had a bit of a point.

I just hope the album has more "Wasabi", "Strip", "Joan Of Arc" type songs and less of what we've heard so far - there's no cohesion at the moment.

I agree with this exactly. Everything they've released since LM5 has been disappointing, so this song isn't it.

EDIT - I feel like I should add that I LOVE Little Mix and I LOVE 'Holiday' but I want more for them and that's OKAY and EXPECTED as a fan.

I'm intrigued as to why are people looking for cohesion so much? Their 2 most successful albums aren't their most cohesive efforts. It's just going to be an album of pop bops - presumably similar to those 2 albums.

Pop albums are quite rarely cohesive (and when they are cohesive they get critiqued for being "too samey" more often than not )

I think the difference from BUS > Holiday is enough to know that they're just gonna give an all out pop album. The songs released still feel very "on brand" for them and that's honestly, all I can ask for at this point, honestly aha.

We all have various opinions on here and all are accepted. We discuss things all the time some agree and some disagree but it should never be taken as an attack.

Don't feel you can't have an input if you don't like this era or a particular song.

I'm surprised how well it's done on iTunes etc and seems to have gathered a bit of interest in the media too with the Simon reference so it's going well so far.

I don't want the album to be super samey, I just want it to sound like a body of work where the tracks belong together. Ironically, this era feels the least "them" so far. I think they know from the performance of "Bounce Back" that their star is fading and they're pushing songs out that they think *might* go down well on TikTok etc.

I guess my main disappointment is that the Little Mix I like is quite different from the Little Mix the public likes. Their best album for me is "Salute" and parts of "LM5" was the closest they've come to matching that, but I'm not getting that vibe so far. This album is reminding me of "Glory Days" so far, which the public loved but I think it's their weakest effort.

Wait... WHAT?

Are you serious? I don't get this (over) reaction at all? I was catching up on the thread, saw some comments about "cohesion" and thought back to that being a recurring theme from this era with some people and I was intrigued as to why it was such a big deal for people?

That's literally ALL it was. :\

I'm sorry but this whole "can't make an opinion in the LM forum coz fans will jump on you" victim mentality needs to stop. We (most of us) literally just reply back to stuff, coz this is a discussion forum. If anyone steps out of line, moderators are here to deal with them. As for this topic, I can't see anyone baiting or anything? So I don't understand how or why you've reacted in such a way to me (or Court, above actually)?

Sorry, my comment was tongue-in-cheek (and not aimed at you in particular) but obviously that didn't come across well.

I'm not "going" anywhere other than not adding anything new to the discussion, because I haven't got anything else to add. I can't comment on whether there is a general vibe in the Little Mix forum, because I don't post often enough.

Basically, this song is OKAY but I want better. I'm happy for the album to come along and blow me away, and I hope it does.

Has anyone seen the giant 'Not a Pop Song' Amazon Music digital banner at a station they posted on Twitter?

Amazon promo is clearly working as they have BUS (32) , Holiday (21) and Not a Pop Song (4) all in the top 40.

I know it's literally like 4 sales but still shows that promo does work (Holiday and BUS weren't even top 75)

This got just under 1M streams on spotify (924k) which isn’t too far off what Holiday got. Really impressive considering it’s not a single!

I do think it’s a shame they had to reference Simon Cowell for a bit of publicity. When that’s the sort cheap tactics Syco and Simon would have done.
I have to agree with a lot of the comments here too. I love the melody and it doesn't bother me that the sound of the song is like a throwback to their earlier stuff, but I do find the lyrics a bit off. Little Mix have never been one to sing about "drinks and drugs" etc., they've increasingly set the new standard for girl groups in terms of lyrical content and messages. I'm sure there will have been times they've had to sing songs they perhaps weren't keen on and had certain things taken out of their control, but it's worth remembering they wouldn't be as successful as they are without Syco and the great pop songs and huge platforms they supplied.

I think they meant it as a double entendre as in Simon Cowell and also the game "Simon says" which has an entire crowd of people following along to a basic instruction. (Not sure why I had to explain the basis of simon says lol but)

Also Simon Cowell has spent his career pushing his acts to their limits and then tossing them aside once they aren't profitable. Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, both big in their prime, are two acts he pushed into depression and once they couldn't handle it, he dropped them and had them blacklisted on the radio. Forgive me if I don't really care that they're having a little dig at such a monster who has made the lives of people (mainly women, and women of colour at that) hell.

Let’s be honest they knew exactly what publicity those lyric’s would produce. Leona Lewis has always seemed to stay on good terms with Simon after she left the record label and was a guest on X Factor numerous times as well as being a judge with him after she left so she couldn’t have that much of a problem with Simon.

Heard the song on Capital today. Great level of support across the board for a promotional single. Roll on 'Sweet Melody'! :)
35 in the mids so should make top 50!

Ooft! I wasn't even expecting top 40 in the mids! Great news. (Tbf I haven't really been following it's chart performance)

Amazing, it's a shame it's missed the top 40 but still so good for an instant grat.

But they are still not singing about drink and drugs in here, right? Yes they do use the words, but they make the point they literally just don't want to sing about these topics and give another message. I think this actually fits them and their brand very well.

Very happy with where this charted this week! (#49)
