It all started off with this track 'Yesterday', which remains the biggest "seller" of his in the year. It also gave Nash a big hit although it's impossible to say what parts were his contributions here as his style is very similar to Emery's. The song was also sent to BJSC, albeit not by myself - finishing in the top five in its contest. It's one of his classic 'pop-trance' tracks with all the elements of a great Emery song, so I'm very glad it got a release even if it was left off the album. The song is lyrically about moving on from the bad times in the past which suit well the uplifting synthtastic drop that follows. The song refused to grow off me for the longest time, and now sits firmly in my all-time top five. So starting off the top five and becoming the first track ever to be in two year-end top 10s (as I predicted last year) is the outstanding 'Heaven' - which sadly may very well be the last time Avicii appears this high up the chart. Here's the long commentary I wrote when it went to #1. For the second consecutive year, following 'Lonely Together' topping the 2018 EOY, it is Avicii who leads the 2019 EOY with 'Heaven'. It is also his 4th EOY chart topper overall, following also 'Wake Me Up' (2013) and 'Waiting For Love' (2015). It was the 3rd single from 'Tim' which instantly entered at #1 upon the album's release and stayed there for 15 weeks, breaking his own record for the most weeks spent at #1 ('Lonely Together' held #1 for 13 weeks). This for me is certainly the song that defined 2019, and its lead is only so small due to its release date. It still sits in the top 10 now (having one of the longest chart runs ever) so it is very much an early contender for being the first song to reach two EOY top 10s. It has just about everything I want from an Avicii song, with its outstanding melody and production. I also think it very much benefits from being slightly longer than the typical Avicii track, giving it the time it needs to build (and the second verse that wasn't there in the 2015 version is a lovely addition) and ultimately paying off in one of the most anthemic drops of Avicii's discography at the 3 minute mark. The story for this song began many years ago however, having been originally recorded in 2014 with Chris Martin. It was soon re-recorded with Simon Aldred and his version was premiered during one of Avicii's sets. A version ripped from the set was subsequently put online, and despite getting no official release it made it to #3 in my chart and #59 in my EOY in that version (which was relatively HQ by standards of live rips). My commentary from that year was: Seriously. What was Avicii thinking not putting this on 'Stories'?? The album is already a 10/10 but this would have made it even better. At least we've got a decent quality version of it out there though, it really is brilliant. Aldred proves himself again to be a great vocalist for Avicii tracks and Avicii works his magic as always. I always knew however it would easily be a #1 if we ever did end up getting a proper version of it coming out. It seemed like the moment had passed when it missed the cut for the 2017 release 'Avīci', but it was supposedly still going to get a future release, and Avicii would decide to go back to the Chris Martin vocal. 2018 soon came and, you know what happened then. So it ended up being this project where 'Heaven' finally got its home, and sadly it proved more fitting for 'Tim' than it would have been for 'Stories', with the main lyric having got a new meaning. My excitement to finally listen to this version was like no other for the whole of the year however, and maybe even the whole of the decade - and for good reason too. [38+ weeks] Video: uo9BelQ-fSc Commentary Two of my BJSC entries of the year appear in the top five - the first of these is 'Afterglow' which became perhaps the biggest sleeper hit ever in my chart taking 24 weeks to finally reach #1. The track is a perfection of progressive trance production-wise, and with a great vocal alongside it. It followed up 'Tomorrow' as the next single which put it in my release radar, which led me to give the album a listen. This is easily the standout, however - a big anthem with a slow build that we don't get enough of, particularly in mainstream EDM where everyone seems to be making sub-3 minute songs. The finale at around the 4 minute mark is a real moment every time. I look forward to if Grum will be putting anything out this year, as after this he's firmly on my radar - it was quite an unexpected move from him having been making synthpop inspired dance 10 years back in 'Heartbeats' but a very welcome sound progression as this is very much my sort of thing. Most people seemed to prefer 'All Day And Night' - and that is indeed brilliant (another 'millionaire' for Jax) - however it is this that did it for me even more. After 'You Don't Know Me' which was one of my top 10 songs of the entire decade, I was very excited for Jax and Raye to come back together. 'Tequila' was a bit different to what I was expecting given ADAN, with it being very focused on the bass wobble rather than going all out with synths, but it is similar to YDKM in that regard I suppose. I'm personally not a tequila drinker, but it certainly has the vibe of being drunk on the dance floor - perhaps why it wasn't such a big hit as it should've been officially given there was no clubbing or festivals this year. Raye really sells it with her sass and a catchy hook too. The Jax Jones follow-up 'I Miss U' was quite the letdown following this, but I trust that he'll make a big dance anthem before long in 2021. The year saw the increasing influence of slap house in the mainstream conscious - particularly in Germany and across Europe - but the whole world got this a a mega smash hit - making it to #1 in the UK and even top 10 in the US. It thus ends up as the biggest mainstream hit of the year in my chart. The sub-genre has got quite samey especially in the last year, but at the time of its release this track sounded very fresh. Even now it holds up with the simplicity of the production soundscape going in its favour alongside an infectious vocal. Imanbek managed to take what was otherwise a slow and uneventful trap song and did exactly what was needed speeding and pitching it up. It makes Saint Jhn sound unintelligible but it's moreso the melody than the actual lyrics that make the track work, with that meaty bass groove from Imanbek being the big selling aspect. It refused to grow off me for the longest time which means it is indeed the #2 of the year having only peaked at #3 - the second song to do so following 'Gecko' in 2014. Neither artist has been able to recreate the magic since, with Imanbek's other productions being a weaker version of this for the most part, and Saint Jhn's follow-up remix 'Trap' also being a C-list version of this. Nonetheless this year-end chart placement is well deserved. [36+ weeks] Video: iSsG5DuOlQ0 Commentary It is therefore a big congrats to Boris Brejcha whose 'Gravity' is without a doubt my favourite discovery of 2020. I say that because the track was actually put out in 2019, but passed me by for well over 6 months before I found by chance someone praising it on r/EDM. You may recall the song from BJSC too, I deliberated on sending it for a few months but gave in eventually when I loved it too much - it even managed to qualify against my expectations. After giving it a listen it went right on my playlist but I didn't anticipate it going on to be my top song of the entire year! Boris is quite well known in the sub-genre of melodic techno (or 'hi-tech minimal'), with some of his DJ sets even getting tens of millions of views, though this was the first I'd heard of him. 'Gravity' is quite different to his usual output however and is truly outstanding for it. The first half of the track is what you'd expect with a big techno beat and bassline, and even that by itself is excellent. The track then halts and goes into a beautiful piano solo, set up by a very short spoken vocal (enough for Laura to receive a credit clearly, but the track is at least 95% an instrumental). This new melody introduced pays off excellently in one last big drop, with the thumping beat and bass from before but sounding all nice and melodic. It was so great to hear a bit of a classical element in a dance track like this (a fusion also responsible for my current personal chart #1), and just sounds perfect to my ears. The song really takes you on a journey unlike many others in its field, and for that it's fully deserving of this #1 position. Boris is yet to have another hit of half this size, but as a respected producer in his field I'm sure he'd be capable of making one when he next feels like it. Juliet & Romeo was a disappointment for me, it was screaming for a Top 40 chart position for much of the year but it was constantly overlooked. Shame it didn’t get a real chance to do well.
