So the #1 song just now isn’t the most streamed, or the most downloaded.

That’s why I hate the ACR rule.

But it is what it is.

Exactly :( :( :(

Not trying to be harsh here but I don’t think a song has been number one for so long and yet I still wouldn’t know if it came on the radio, hasn’t stuck with me at all.
As much as I love Mariah’s song, I don’t want it to be no1. The song has had its time and ii would rather a more modern Christmas song gets the no1 trophy. It’s just strange a song from 26 years ago getting to no1 - I mean it would never have happened in pre-streaming era and that’s one thing I don’t like about streaming. So many songs these days achieving multiple platinum status but it’s just not comparable with the old days when the charts were purely based on physical sales.

But all the modern ones are shit 😂 (except Leona)

Sia says hi

And we all say bye.

I do agree though, a lot of modern Christmas music is bad but so is older Christmas music, with the exception of Mariah and like... Boney M lmao. I get my musical jush from Glee for Christmas. In my opinion it should have its own chart, it’s so frustrating that for 5/6 weeks of the year the charts take a dive cause everyone can’t wait to be festive. Same with Halloween. A “Holiday” chart would be nice.

The chart impact from Halloween is literally 3 songs re-entering (not even in the top 40) for one week per year, not exactly comparable

The fact that the OCC implementing the permanent ACR rule for 3+ year old songs barely made any impact at all on the Christmas song domination is just a demonstration of how dominant Christmas songs are at this time of year, it'd really be farcical for them to just act like they don't exist.

I mean, Elvis rereleased 3 songs in the 2000s which got to number one, almost 50 years after their original release; and Mariah got to #4 based off downloads in 2007, so this isn't just down to streaming. Never mind songs like PJ and Duncan's "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble", which hit number 1 20 years after they were released before streaming had an impact on the charts!

And Kelly. Who I can getting a new peak next week now which is fine with me!

Its happened throughout all eras in the charts the only thing was in the physical era you had to physically send more copies to the shops so people could buy them.

I actually prefer when a number one reflects what song is the most (streamed, bought, downloaded etc) regardless of age

Bieber and/or Glynne will get it this year, don't worry

They need to quickly introduce Ultra ACR (2,000 streams = 1 sale) - a special rule for songs that are older than 25 years. Now THAT should do the trick and keep Mariah off the top spot. :w00t:

No chance. Top 5 at best.

The thing is we could be looking at Mariah number 1 and the same 5 songs top 5 EVERY Christmas. Who really wants that?

I'm here for one of those things!

Trust me the novelty will wear off when you stop bothering to even check the charts during December

I must admit, I do hate how the chart gets flooded with Christmas songs for basically 6 whole weeks these days. 3 weeks or so would be absolutely fine, but that's just too much.

Well, that's probably the one benefit to Mariah being permanently stuck at #2. "Will she finally get the #1 this year?" is basically the only storyline we have to follow every Christmas.

If it was anyone other than Mariah that was the top Christmas song every year, people would be calling for a change in the rules. People complained about Ellie Goulding being #1 last year thanks to Alexa, but Mariah similarly benefits from "passive" playlist plays.

Yes, it's undoubtedly genuinely the most popular Christmas song, but it still has an unfair advantage over everything else. All Christmas songs have an unfair advantage just due to the fact Christmas exists and comes round every year. And we don't need the chart to tell us that people listen to Christmas songs at Christmas. The whole point of it is a promotional tool for the music industry - and now it's useless for a few weeks of the year.
