The thing is, ACR allows the best of both worlds. It allows representation of what the general public are listening to, but bumps the oldies down a bit so that fresh music can get a fair hearing too. Christmastime is no different - the Xmas songs have a handicap on their streaming and yet they are still dominating. An OCC rule won't help Ed or Taylor get more streams, it would artificially bump them higher in the chart because certain types of songs would be removed entirely - that's MUCH less representative than the chart currently is with ACR and the 3-track rule. You can't force the public away from Christmas songs and onto new music.

I agree with this - the existing rules are a compromise that give non Christmas songs a fighting chance (note Willow would have been about #17 without them), but still ensure the chart fundamentally reflects what people are consuming.

It's pretty crazy to see ancient songs by Dean Martin and Andy Williams higher than Ed on his first day but I can see they're very high on the Christmas Hits playlist which so many people must just be playing in order. I expect a lot of people haven't even noticed Ed's return in the deluge, midway through Christmas week has to be one of the most misguided release strategies ever - the very peak of Christmas streaming.

Not at all surprised that Ed hasn't done huge numbers. The song just isn't overly commercial - even the biggest stars can't maintain extreme levels of popularity if they don't give the public what they want.

 

I do think it's a stand alone single that isn't aimed at chart domination to be fair to him, it will be interesting to see if it ends up being reflective of the sound of his next album because at the moment I'm suspecting it's just a little track that he wanted to put out there - it almost has like a demo sound to it, even if I do prefer the sound to his usual style(!)

Don't think it's that different compared to Supermarket flowers or Thinking out loud or Photograph

 

More than anything it just shows that during Xmas week people only care about Xmas songs

 

Yeah it's not as poppy as I Don't Care or Shape of You but I would say it's all too different sonically to Thinking if You, Castle on the Hill, A Team etc etc

People need to stop staying 'the most popular songs should be the ones to chart' if that was the case we wouldn't have ACR or the 3 track rule.

 

And in 2 fridays time both Taylor and Ed are likely to be top 10 again!

If any song has a chance to be w sleeper hit it’s this one. I don’t think that will happen because it’s too folky, not commercial enough. but it’s ed Sheeran and people don’t know he released. There’s no way his team thought they would do well off the gates releasing on the 21st December.

Love how Ed is so desperate for the Christmas #1 that he purposefully denied himself the first three and a half days of the tracking week... :P

 

An underwhelming start by his standards for sure but it's still the highest non Christmas song on both Spotify and Apple despite apparently being a relatively uncommercial release, not anything to sniff at. I'm sure he'd have done better if he did just drop another bland trop pop song.
