Blithe was a name I knew from supporting Ruel on tour in 2019, but I hadn't heard If I Ain't the One before BJSC. I instantly loved it and it became my top BJSC discovery of 2020! Several other artists in this section gained their first top 10s in 2020 - Malou Prytz managed two, and Ballerina was the first after Melodifestivalen. Jubël's cover of Dancing in the Moonlight gave both them and singer NEIMY their first top 10s, Eddie Benjamin's chirpily titled Fuck My Friends was a slow burner that led to his first top tier hit, and most impressively, The Weeknd scored his very first top 10 with In Your Eyes - already a top 20 hit, the Doja Cat remix of that elevated it further. Doja actually features twice in this section, with Boss Bitch just one place below, leaving two more of her tracks to come. Elsewhere, Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK teamed up for the infectious Sour Candy, Selena Gomez's album title track became an instant but short-lived top 3 hit, New Hope Club's Worse became their third top 10 and second top 5 hit, and Noak Hellsing's second of two follows not long after his first; Lost was his debut single and became a top 10 in January 2020. 1RvW0ak3CO4
January 29, 20214 yr Boss Bitch *.* !!! Big anthem and mood, plus a contender for my #1 :o "Burning toast in my toaster" foreshadowing "blue cheese" and and the many other food-referencing songs of 2020. We been knew!
January 29, 20214 yr Author Artists: Top 10 5 Conan Gray I first discovered Conan Gray in mid-2019 with his track The King, which I really enjoyed. I wasn't really sure what to expect from him going forward but he had a good voice and some interesting lyrics, so he was definitely one to watch. My anticipation for Conan's debut album only grew throughout 2019 - I saw him live, and the singles released towards the end of the year were some of his best tracks to date! Checkmate kicked off the Kid Krow era and of course, Maniac followed by the end of the year, and I sent it to BJSC. In 2020, Kid Krow arrived, supported by Wish You Were Sober - Conan's first #1 single in my chart. The album topped my chart too - a perfect coming-of-age album with honest and relatable feelings for someone growing up in today's world. The emotions Conan describes are complex and his lyricism is always so well crafted. I was so excited to see Conan gaining a breakthrough hit globally with Heather, unfairly written off as boring by many when it describes the complex emotions of loving someone who cares more for the perfect pretty girl than an outsider. I really hope Conan's able to follow it up with another hit soon, he's too talented to be a one-hit wonder!
January 29, 20214 yr No Judgement and Dancing In The Moonlight are both on the better side of last year's chart hits! My Little Dancer sounds lovely as well giving that a quick play now.
January 30, 20214 yr Author Songs: Top 300 111 Ben Dolic feat. B-OK - Violent Thing | 34-4-7-11-20-30-x 112 Kylie Minogue - Magic | 2-9-19-28-39-x 113 The Kid LAROI - I WISH | 18-17-27-x 114 Klara & Jag feat. Oscar Enestad - Aska | 6-10-17-20-27-33-39-x 115 Rita Ora - How to Be Lonely | 1-4-13-16-19-28-35-x 116 BTS - Dynamite | 5-5-12-21-33-x 117 Donna Missal - Hurt By You | 16-17-19-8-11-21-31-38-x 118 Paris Hilton & Lodato - I Blame You | 10-15-19-28-25-28-29-33-34-x-7-… 119 Ariana Grande - positions | 5-10-16-22-33-x 120 Miley Cyrus feat. Dua Lipa - Prisoner | 6-11-22-28-x-34-… The stakes get a lot higher now as we're getting closer and closer to that top 100! Miley Cyrus is extremely hit and miss for me, but Prisoner was a definite hit and became her joint second highest peaker (tied with Malibu, behind #1 hit Don't Call Me Angel), with some help of course from Dua Lipa who still has two tracks to feature. Speaking of Don't Call Me Angel, Miley's collaborator Ariana Grande is next out with positions, a UK #1 and a top 5 hit for me. Only one other UK hit appears in this section, and that's Dynamite by BTS! Kylie's Magic was a more minor chart hit, and actually just avoids being the lowest placed top 2 hit because *SOUND THE ALARM* we've lost the first #1...!! Rita Ora's How to Be Lonely most definitely only slid to #1 by name power for me, it didn't hold up very well and though I like the song, Rita is capable of far better. It beat Boy In Space's u n eye to #1, and that's still to come, so perhaps a chart regret of mine from 2020 there. Elsewhere, we have Paris Hilton's surprisingly big comeback hit I Blame You and Donna Missal's breakthrough smash from after I saw her live supporting Lewis Capaldi. Hurt By You is a glorious track! Ben Dolic's Violent Thing is the highest of 2020's would-be Eurovision entries, and Swedish duo Klara & Jag achieved their first hit with help from a 4-line guest verse from Oscar Enestad. Finally, I'd like to make a correction - I wrongly stated that Cheat Codes' Heaven was the highest non-top 10 hit, and I was wrong! The Kid LAROI's I WISH takes the honour, a powerful track about the pain of heartbreak. Despite a short chart run, it's a track that's really stuck with me thanks to the huge impact the whole album's had. qn-LbgUGJB0
January 31, 20214 yr Author Songs: Top 300 101 Alec Benjamin - Oh My God | 3-11-14-22-34-x-39-x 102 Rockett & Dubbs feat. Alex Angelo - Out the Dark | 10-7-9-17-21-30-40-x 103 Melanie C - Blame It On Me | 11-5-8-16-29-x 104 The Vamps - Better | 5-10-12-23-27-40-x 105 Reed Deming - Overthinking | 37-x-9-5-10-18-20-26-32-38-x 106 Ava Max - Salt | 11-18-6-9-16-30-34-x 107 Lady Gaga - Stupid Love | 4-11-17-20-26-29-34-x 108 24kGoldn feat. iann dior - Mood | 9-4-11-16-30-34-x 109 Annie - Dark Hearts | 20-21-10-4-9-23-29-39-x 110 Isac Elliot - Ghost | 1-3-11-18-24-33-x The #1 alarm sounds again as we lose a second chart-topper before the top 100. Isac Elliot's Ghost won a closely fought battle with Justin Bieber's Holy, and sure, I think it's a great track, but it tailed off quickly. Holy did similarly but recovered, and features much higher in the EOY so it's definitely something I've come to regret. From my chart to the UK one, 24kGoldn's chart-topping hit Mood features here, his first of two tracks (and the only one for iann dior). Top 5 hits start to drop more quickly now too, with Annie's best performing chart hit to date (mostly because this is her first era since my chart began...!), Lady Gaga's Chromatica lead single (leaving just Rain On Me remaining for her) and the first of two songs for The Vamps. After losing a couple of album tracks lower down, Melanie C loses the first of three singles with Blame It On Me at #103, and Alec Benjamin loses one more song just outside the top 100, but he's still got four more to come. Reed Deming scored his best performing hit since the end of 2014 with Overthinking, ranking as his highest 2020 track, and Ava Max's Salt is also her top track of the year, reaching #6 in the first week of 2020. Finally, two newcomer acts make up the song at #102 - I can't find much about Rockett & Dubbs online and the crediting for this track is beyond inconsistent (Rockett & Dubbs are not mentioned on the artwork or the YouTube video but are on all streaming + download platforms), but Alex Angelo is the driving force. An independent artist who vowed to release a new song every 3 weeks in 2020, Out the Dark was the one that caught my attention the most, and it remains the only hit for him and his mysterious collaborators. l9sAkLMEqV0
February 1, 20214 yr Nice to see Magic here, although I didn't chart it myself it's definitely my favourite of the new Kylie songs I've heard! Giving Out the Dark a listen now, the drop isn't doing it for me but the rest of the song is really nice, got me nodding my head to it which is always a good thing (and the drop is actually sounding better as well now as I'm getting towards the end of the song)
February 2, 20214 yr Author Songs: Top 300 91 Camila Cabello feat. DaBaby - My Oh My | 35-26-21-5-6-9-15-19-30-x 92 The Kid LAROI feat. Marshmello - FEEL SOMETHING | 7-4-10-20-29-35-x 93 Delta Goodrem - Keep Climbing | 1-7-14-19-27-38-x 94 The Kid LAROI feat. Machine Gun Kelly - F*CK YOU, GOODBYE | 6-5-11-25-36-36-x 95 Miles Wesley - Neighborhood | 3-6-11-17-29-37-x 96 Alice Chater - Two of Us | 7-6-5-12-21-34-x 97 Astrid S - Dance Dance Dance | 36-28-36-33-10-15-19-32-39-x 98 Oscar Enestad - Se På Oss Nu | 4-11-20-26-33-x 99 Why Don't We - Slow Down | 5-3-… 100 Anson Seabra - Last Time | 39-36-19-4-7-11-22-30-x Finally, we slide into the top 100! Singer/songwriter Anson Seabra kicks us off with the beautifully understated Last Time, a track that soared into my top 10 in the very first week of 2020. It remains his only top 10 hit but he's scored a #1 album and a couple more lower-peaking hits since. Camila Cabello's My Oh My reached the top 10 in the same week, registering as her only top tier hit of an otherwise quiet year for Camila. It also represents the first top 10 hit for DaBaby, who amazingly went on to score three more over 2020 - one of which is still to come. Everyone else in this section is no stranger to the top 10, though for Astrid S, it had been five years since her first top 10 2AM, and her second Dance Dance Dance, which after a slow start, soared to the top 10 in its fifth week. Astrid scored a third top 10 hit later in the year with R3HAB and HRVY on Am I the Only One, which placed lower down. Also scoring his biggest hit in a while is Miles Wesley, formerly of ABC's talent show Boy Band, now making waves for himself as a hip-hop star. Neighborhood marked his first notable hit since he reached #1 alongside HNNBL on Trust. Why Don't We's Slow Down makes the top 100 despite only coming out two weeks before the end of the year - it surely would've been higher had it had a little more time but still, it marks their first appearance of four this year. Oscar Enestad pops up again with his second highest track of the year, and Alice Chater's only 2020 appearance is at #96 after becoming her biggest hit to date, outdoing #10 hit Tonight from 2019. Delta Goodrem's #1 hit Keep Climbing is at #93, becoming her second highest appearance of the year, and two The Kid LAROI album tracks fall here, though he still has 9 (!) songs to come. FEEL SOMETHING marked Marshmello's first top 10 hit since 2018's FRIENDS, and F*CK YOU, GOODBYE (unofficial Trump anthem? x) was Machine Gun Kelly's first since 2018's Too Good to Be True alongside Danny Avila and The Vamps. k4BcibWlFxY
February 2, 20214 yr Author Artists: Top 10 4 Harry Styles I said near the start that an artist doesn't necessarily have to have released an album in 2020 to qualify here, and here's proof. Harry Styles released Fine Line at the end of 2019, and within two weeks, it became my #2 album of the year (dare I say I'd put it at #1 now, no shade at all to Greyson Chance's portraits!), and Harry himself claimed my #1 artist of 2019. Harry features again because, unlike most artists, he didn't completely abandon the era when the album came out. Three post-album singles came in 2020, and each one felt like an event of its own. Falling, accompanied by a stunning BRITs performance and a visually beautiful video, showcased a different side to the album after Lights Up and Adore You. Of course, Watermelon Sugar became one of the songs of the summer, and Golden kept the album afloat in Q4 and into January. Every inch of this campaign has been meticulously planned by Harry and his team, and that's what has made Fine Line one of the best album eras in recent history. Of course, 2020 was supposed to be the year of Love On Tour, but that's postponed indefinitely for now. I'm hoping 2021 will be the year, I truly cannot wait
February 3, 20214 yr Author Songs: Top 300 81 Powfu - 17again | 5-8-14-15-19-24-33-x 82 Ulrik Munther - Don't Worry | 1-5-8-18-26-38-x 83 TRXD & Peder Elias - Care Less | 3-1-5-12-21-21-22-33-x 84 Ulrik Munther - Man in Need | 2-3-6-14-23-32-x 85 Troye Sivan - Easy | 25-3-7-16-20-22-28-x-26-x 86 Malou Prytz - Tik Tok | 5-10-11-14-15-23-27-39-x 87 Rina Sawayama - LUCID | 12-1-5-11-26-24-… 88 Oscar Enestad - Sorger | 2-3-12-17-21-37-x 89 Future Jr. - Sounds Like Rain | 7-6-13-21-23-26-30-x 90 Shawn Mendes & Justin Bieber - Monster | 1-4-12-24-x-36-… It's no shock at all to see that a Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber collaboration made my #1 spot. What's more surprising is its chart run! Its initial run of 4 weeks is the lowest of any #1 hit since my chart expanded from a top 10, and though it returned after the Christmas songs departed, it was still an underwhelming result. That's not to say I don't enjoy the song, though. I actually like it more in isolation than I do as part of the Wonder album. I'm quite hard on it because I wanted better but it's a great track and I think both Shawn and Justin sound brilliant together. Every other track in this section features one vocalist, though #83 is still a collaboration. TRXD and Peder Elias teamed up for Care Less, which immediately became the first top 10 hit for both artists (and TRXD's first hit altogether), before taking advantage of a quiet week and grabbing the #1 spot. It's not the biggest chart-topper of the year, far from it in fact, but it's a fun track that reminds me of the first lockdown, and not in such a negative way either. Two more #1s appear here, one courtesy of Rina Sawayama. Rina's been on my radar for a while but I actually hadn't ever charted her before LUCID, making its #1 peak even more impressive but it's just an undeniably great pop song. Ulrik Munther completes the set of #1s with Don't Worry, his fourth single of 2020 and second of them to drop out, just after Man in Need which also departs in this section. The latter was Ulrik's only 2020 single to miss #1, losing out to jens' In or Out, which is still to come. Elsewhere, Future Jr. appears with his first hit of two in a breakout year for him. Sounds Like Rain was the second of his two hits and one of a rather small number of non-top 5 hits in my top 100 - specifically, it's the fifth highest of six #6-10 peaking hits. Oscar Enestad's highest track is Sorger at #88; the track became his highest-charting Swedish language track and best performing song since I Love It reached #1 in early 2019. Another former Melfest star, Malou Prytz scored her biggest hit yet with Tik Tok, not related to the social media app, and is actually the first of my 9 2020 BJSC entries to appear (AJ Mitchell's Say It Again came under 2019 for me, hence there being one missing!). Troye Sivan's Easy is his first appearance of three this year, and Powfu's 17again is the first of five appearances from him in the top 100! sFoWuTIGSUc
February 3, 20214 yr Author Songs: Top 300 71 Olivia Rodrigo - All I Want | 5-1-4-12-15-26-34-x 72 Troye Sivan - Rager teenager! | 39-4-6-8-13-20-25-35-x 73 Conan Gray - Heather | 9-10-17-28-33-17-19-17-18-19-29-30-38-x 74 Anne-Marie - Birthday | 3-6-18-17-12-21-30-39-x 75 Justin Bieber feat. Quavo - Intentions | 4-9-22-23-32-x 76 Clean Bandit & Mabel feat. 24kGoldn - Tick Tock | 2-3-10-14-24-26-29-34-37-x 77 Dua Lipa - Love Again | 8-5-6-12-16-22-30-37-x 78 Selena Gomez - Dance Again | 4-7-8-15-24-33-x 79 Anna Bergendahl - Kingdom Come | 4-7-3-9-14-29-37-x 80 Dotter - Bulletproof | 5-8-6-12-16-30-40-x Melodifestivalen had a record year in my chart, seeing a greater impact than ever before. Two tracks exemplify that in this section, with both Dotter and Anna Bergendahl gaining the biggest hits so far. Dotter hadn't charted before Melfest 2020 in fact, but Bulletproof soared into my top 10 and she followed it up with Backfire, a top 20 hit, later in the year. Dotter's returning for 2021 too so I'm hoping for another excellent track and performance combination! Kingdom Come meanwhile felt like a redemption arc for Anna Bergendahl, who gave Sweden their only Eurovision DNQ since the semi final system was introduced. While it didn't win Melfest, Kingdom Come gained a medal position and definitely completed Anna's redemption arc. In my chart, it was her second top 40 hit (after Home) and first top 10, peaking at #3 after the Melfest final. Back-to-back just above are two album tracks with the word "again" in the title. Selena Gomez's Dance Again debuted at #4 the week her Rare album came out and ultimately outperformed its title track, which debuted at #3 the same week, as well as re-issue single Boyfriend that came a few months later. It strikes me as a massive missed opportunity, unlike Dua Lipa's Love Again. Though I'd absolutely love to see Love Again become a single, I actually think Dua's picked her singles really well with Future Nostalgia. That said, I do prefer Love Again to Break My Heart, Hallucinate and even Don't Start Now on a personal level. It made a huge impact on my chart and showed some good longevity for a track that didn't get its own push! Some chart hits feature in this section, too. Clean Bandit and Mabel teamed up for Tick Tock, a catchy bop that gets far too much hate on this site. 24kGoldn's rap slots in nicely too and as a result, it became both Mabel and 24kGoldn's highest charting track, and Clean Bandit's best performer since Symphony reached #1 in 2017. Two tracks that came out the same week, Anne-Marie and Justin Bieber both lost out to the unstoppable duo of Boy In Space's Caroline and The Pussycat Dolls' React in one of the biggest weeks of the year for my chart, but Birthday and Intentions were both strong hits. Birthday may not be Anne-Marie's very best but I find it gets very unfairly maligned! Intentions was by far the best track to come out of the Changes era and gave Justin the top 5 hit he didn't manage to get with Yummy. Conan Gray's Heather became one of the most exciting chart hits of 2020 for me. I LOVE seeing an artist I adore break through into the chart, and Conan was no exception. With some help from TikTok, Heather became a top 20 hit, and a relatable anthem for so many young people who don't get the attention they desire from their crush. It's a testament to Conan's brilliant songwriting and performance, too! He has one more song to come in the countdown. Troye Sivan's second of three tracks is at #72, the stunning Rager teenager! being an ode to his younger self. Finally, when I compiled this countdown, Olivia Rodrigo hadn't seen her incredible breakthrough happen yet. Now, she's a global star, but she was a star in my chart first :basil: All I Want became a #1 in early 2020, taking advantage of a quiet week, but it's an absolutely beautiful track and I actually still prefer it to drivers license, which is still really great. February 4, 20214 yr Come on double whammy of Anna & Dotter  Definitely the two I've played most, Kingdom Come deserves more love </3
