24kGoldn featuring iann dior

Mood

170x170bb-60.jpg

1st single from El Dorado

Released: 24th July 2020

Label: Records Label / Columbia

Arriving at the tail end of summer, 24kGoldn's mood very quickly asserted itself as a smash hit, impressively making its top 40 debut as high as #11, soaring to the top spot just four weeks later, overtaking Cardi B's WAP. Mood of course followed CITY OF ANGELS, a #25 hit caused by TikTok during the first lockdown. Mood interestingly made its top 40 debut the same week as 24kGoldn's third (and so far, only other) top 40 hit, Tick Tock with Clean Bandit and Mabel, which of course gave him a second top 10 hit later on. The track is a collaboration with iann dior, a Puerto Rican-born American singer and rapper who hasn't yet scored another top 100 hit, but interestingly, he apparently features on the next Clean Bandit single...!

Biography

With melodic flows inspired by a love of both high-end fashion and his music industry lifestyle, Bay Area rapper 24kGoldn achieved platinum success before his 18th birthday. The rapper rose quickly from posting his songs online to a major-label deal as he produced hits like the passionate rap/singing hybrid "Valentino."

24kGoldn was born Golden Landis Von Jones in 2000. Growing up in a lively neighborhood in the Bay Area, he was exposed to different cultural perspectives early on, which would later inform his versatile approach to music. He began singing, but during his formative years he was more interested in fashion and sneakers than music. When he began rapping at age 14, his musical persona took shape quickly. By 2016 he had begun posting songs online, and early singles like "iPhone" and "Trapper's Anthem" attracted moderate attention. He steadily released new songs, and it was 2018's "Ballin' Like Shareef" that broke through to wider audiences. At this point, 24kGoldn was attending University of Southern California and signed to Columbia affiliate Records LLC while working toward his degree. From there he recorded several songs that would become viral hits, beginning with the danceable and hooky "Valentino" in late 2018 and continuing in 2019 with "Games on Your Phone" and "A Lot to Lose." His first EP, Dropped Outta College, was released in November of 2019 and charted in the Billboard 200. - Apple Music

Thought Mood might be a little bit higher given it made #1 on the reshuffle chart. Mid table feels about right for it though - it’s a great tune but there’s not that much to it for me.

Billie Eilish

No Time To Die

170x0w.jpg

Soundtrack single from No Time To Die

Released: 14th February 2020

Label: Darkroom / Interscope Records

Naturally, a Bond theme is always guaranteed to be one of the most hyped releases of the year. Speculation was rife as to who would follow Sam Smith's track from 2015, which became the first ever Bond theme to reach #1, and after plenty of rumours, Billie Eilish was confirmed in January 2020. Billie rewrote history by becoming the youngest person to have written and recorded a Bond theme, as well as scoring the biggest opening week in the UK chart for any Bond theme ever! Not only that, but it was also Billie's first #1, and still her only one as things stand. Despite the hype, though, the track fell down the chart quite quickly, not helped by the COVID-19 pandemic pushing back the film and radios frowning upon a track with the word "die" in the title.

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal, and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—FINNEAS at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Hardly two years later, she’d released the Grammys-slaying WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?, an experimental-pop opus that explored mental health and all manner of sleep phenomena, totally upending the notions of what constitutes pop music in 2020. (She also won the inaugural Apple Music Award for Global Artist of the Year.) Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she said. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music

Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion

WAP

170x170bb-60.jpg

1st single from second studio album

Released: 7th August 2020

Label: Atlantic Recording Corporation

Cardi B quickly made a name for herself back when Bodak Yellow entered the charts in 2017. Though she racked up a Hot 100 #1 in the US with her breakthrough single, she hadn't made it any higher than #4 in the UK, and even that was thanks to an Ed Sheeran collaboration. Quite how Cardi's comeback would fare was anyone's guess, but as soon as the song came out, it became obvious. Teaming up with Megan Thee Stallion for one of the year's most explicit hits, WAP went viral, sparking debates and memes all across the internet. It matched Cardi's highest peaking track in week 1, before claiming the title itself the week after and climbing to #1 in its fourth week. Love it or hate it, WAP was one of the biggest talking points of 2020 and proved Cardi is here to stay.

Biography

Cardi B’s come-up reads like a 2010s Cinderella story. In just a handful of years, the sharp-tongued New Yorker went from viral Instagram phenom to one of hip-hop’s most exciting voices, establishing herself as a bossed-up feminist icon along the way. Born Belcalis Almanzar in the South Bronx in 1992, Cardi got a job as a stripper at 19, quickly building a social media following—in addition to her devotees at the club—for her viral videos and hilarious catchphrases. In 2015, she scored a spot on VH1’s drama-filled reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York, where her brash personality turned her into an immediate fan favourite among her more established costars. That same over-the-top charisma made Cardi a natural fit for rap dominance; witty, unfiltered and totally fearless, her early tracks doubled as mantras for self-made women who put themselves first. But it was “Bodak Yellow” that launched Cardi into superstardom; a trap anthem that rang out from cars and clubs throughout 2017, it begging you to shout along. Her 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy, fused the Latin music of her childhood with hardcore New York hustlers' anthems, and squashed any doubts as to whether Cardi was here to stay. Meanwhile, her scene-stealing guest verses span the pop charts, from Bruno Mars (“Finesse [Remix]”) to Ozuna (“La Modelo”) to Maroon 5 (“Girls Like You”). Not bad for a self-proclaimed regular girl from The Bronx. - Apple Music

I think No Time To Die is beautifully written, staying true both to Billie’s style and the Bond theme sound. Hopefully it can get a second wind when the film finally arrives.

I really liked WAP and thought it fully deserved its success, but found it wasn’t something I wanted to listen to more than a few times.

2 of thy faves leaving back to back, glad Cardi and Billie got their #1s though

I love no time to die, prob my fave song by BE

The film release would have made it bigger.

I thought WAP would be higher !

'Mood' and 'No Time To Die' are both thoroughly deserving of their top ten positions. 'WAP' is... not. In fact it's about 100 places too high for my liking. I still don't really get its appeal.

Ariana Grande

positions

170x170bb-60.jpg

1st single from Positions

Released: 23rd October 2020

Label: Republic Records

Only one artist scored more than one #1 in 2020 - Ariana Grande, of course. Kicking off Ariana's sixth era, lead single positions rocketed to the top spot in October 2020, becoming her seventh chart-topper overall, and fifth within two years! Initially, it was looking like it may only get a couple of weeks at the top, but due to an all-round lack of competition and some impressive consistency from Ariana, the track notched up a huge six weeks at the top, fending off Billie Eilish and Mariah Carey (to start with, at least) in that time. The Positions era has proved to be another fruitful one for Ariana all-round, too - the album also reached #1, claiming her second chart double after break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored debuted at #1 on the singles chart, while parent album thank u, next reached the top of the album chart in 2019.

Biography

Armed with a mesmerizing, nimble soprano—and a vocal register often likened to Mariah Carey’s and Christina Aguilera’s—Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before transforming into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Instantly recognizable thanks to her signature ponytail, cat ears, babydoll dresses, and breezy self-confidence, her slyly sexual personal brand has, like that of the Spice Girls before her, become an iconic image of young female power. But Grande is more than a symbol: Over the course of several albums and scores of hit singles—beginning with 2013’s “The Way” (featuring Mac Miler) through The Weeknd-assisted “Love Me Harder” and “Break Free” (featuring Zedd)—she has consistently outshined her male collaborators and deftly parlayed her stardom into activism. An LGBTQ advocate and outspoken feminist (“I’m tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY,” she tweeted in 2016), she uses her platform to confront issues like misogyny, sexism, homophobia, and bullying, spreading a message of love over all. Nowhere was this more clear than in May 2017: After terrorists attacked her concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 and injuring hundreds, Grande continued her tour. "Perspective changes your life,” she told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. "You want to stay in the moment and try not to give into fear, because obviously the whole point of finishing the tour was being there for my fans. You want to set the same example and keep going.” And that she did: Her Max Martin-produced smash “No Tears Left to Cry,” an escapist dance-floor triumph released a year after the attack, sends a message of hope and healing, with a dose of hear-me-roar attitude. - Apple Music

Pleased to see 'positions' up in 7th! It's sometimes hard to remember that it does have a lot of fans on here because the haters seem to be louder

That result was about expected for Billie but I wish it could've done better! I hate that its hype evaporated so quickly </3 bring on the proper Bond second wind.

I'm happy that the general public seems to have received 'positions' better than the Internet has. It's one of her best songs imo.
boo Billie being so low, beautiful song!
Ugh that awful Bond theme waaay too high. Not looking forward to its inevitable re-entry when the film is eventually released in 2029.
Positions narrowly missed receiving points from me but I think it's a very sweet song and it has a charmingly understated quality to it. I certainly don't begrudge it its success.
