March 1, 20214 yr Are there even *that* many rappers over 35 who continue to do well on streaming other than Eminem/Kanye? most of them Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, J Cole , Future , Drake is almost 35, i could go on and on...
March 1, 20214 yr most of them Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, J Cole , Future , Drake is almost 35, i could go on and on... Lil Wayne and Jay Z? I don't recall them having many hits in the last couple of years?
March 1, 20214 yr Lil Wayne and Jay Z? I don't recall them having many hits in the last couple of years? Lil Wayne reached number 1 in the US Billboard album charts a few months ago mostly thanks to streaming... Edited March 1, 20214 yr by Dark Horse
March 1, 20214 yr going through all the answers I actually think Katy Perry is the best example I still remember how badly Spotify supported the single, especially on HH, and otherwise it would have been a much more massive hit and would have never missed the top 10
March 1, 20214 yr Actually, I think Zara could be a good example of someone who came in the early days of streaming and became a big artist who we've since lost.
March 1, 20214 yr Just thought could Dizzee Rascal qualify here? Had his career ended with its peak in 2008-10 I would say no but he actually went on to have four more Top 10 singles with his next album in 2013 (although admittedly 'Bassline Junkie' is probably the only one anybody remembers). He's also not just completely left the industry since then but has had a couple of minor hits in the streaming era that couldn't make it big, the biggest of which reached #34.
March 1, 20214 yr Dizzee did very well to stretch out his commercial appeal as long as he did. I think he was on his way out even if streaming had never taken over to the extent it did from 2014.
March 1, 20214 yr I don't think Dizzee makes very commercial music anymore which I think has more to do with it.
March 1, 20214 yr dizzie got annoyed in late 2013 when Radio 1 stopped playlisting him. Zara Larsson is more of an example of someone who began rising in the streaming era but never really lived up to the hype.
March 1, 20214 yr I don't think Dizzee makes very commercial music anymore which I think has more to do with it. Didn't he only go back to making uncommercial music cos his hit chasing Calvin Harris collab was a big flop?
March 1, 20214 yr His Ella Eyre collab from last year is very pop-sounding (and quite good), not sure if it got pushed much though outside of a music video
March 1, 20214 yr Being Swedish Zara Larsson was born to stream. It's just that her 15/30 minutes are finished. It happens.
March 1, 20214 yr I feel like there was a lot of push for Swedish influence on the charts during the rise of Spotify, helped also by it naturally being disproportionately popular there, which has since faded quite a bit* so the same momentum just isn't there anymore *The difference between where Sweden ranks on early streaming hits and recent streaming hits on kworb's site (which lists countries left to right based on total streams) shows how far it's fallen It kind of makes me wonder how long it'll take until there's legitimate global presence of Japanese and especially Indian hits as the platform continues to grow in both places that comfortably have the populations to take over. March 1, 20214 yr But still, she really broke through during the streaming era. I'd say Breathe Me was also bigger than her #10 hit Taken for Granted. Yeah, I just don’t think of it as a comeback really, more finally (and unexpectedly) getting her big break. She was never really on the public’s radar, Titanium would have been 99% of the population’s introduction to her.

She was never really on the public’s radar, Titanium would have been 99% of the population’s introduction to her. The only work of her's I knew before the release of 'Titanium' was 'Breathe Me' and that wasn't actually a chart hit. IIRC it was one of those songs that was used a lot in fan edit type videos for TV shows in the early days of YouTube and that could be partly how it became well know. I had know idea she'd had a Top 10 single in 2000 until much later.
