50. 50 Cent - In Da Club 126pts

Writers - Curtis Jackson, Andre Young, Mike Elizondo

Top points - RabbitFurCoat 22, ready for it 17, Leonardo 15

An American number 1 for 50 Cent and his first hit single in the UK. It wins a tie-break over My Prerogative by 15 votes to 11.

Was “In Da Club” the first chart reference to “shorty”?

I think Shaggy got there first with "Shorty you're my angel..."

Edited by Dot Branning

Sorry I forgot to vote in this, this is the second time in the last ~week that I've been reminded of needing to vote in something but then almost immediately forgot again oops. Nevermind, hoping there won't be any faves of mine narrowly missing out!

Looks like the correct song finishing in last place here x although criminally low for 'In Da Club', a classic.

I think Shaggy got there first with "Shorty you're my angel..."

There were loads before that - the first I remember is KP & Envyi - Swing My Way from 1998

Edit: and Prince songs way before that.

LOL I knew there would be something else before that but the Shaggy one was the earliest I could remember off the top of my head.

I had a feeling Mel & Kim would be out really early - I noticed they weren’t getting much love. I love that song though.
Yeah I should have given them something but I kept thinking of “Respectable” instead and that wouldn’t get out of my head!

The Charlatans have 22 top 40 hits to their name with One To Another giving the group their best chart position. The song was used as the theme tune to the E4 programme 'My Mad Fat Diary'.

48. Janet Jackson - Let's Wait Awhile 138pts

Writers - James Harris III, Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson, Melanie Andrews

Top points - vibe 23, Simon 23, DarrenJ77 22

Janet Jackson's third top 10 single. The writers settled out of court with Gerry Beckley after he claimed the song was very similar to one he wrote for his band America, called 'Daisy Jane'. Having listened to it, I agree with him.

'My Prerogative' the first of my votes to drop out! The song really made sense for Britney as an artist and I find the production more interesting that the original.

47. Erasure - Blue Savannah 145pts

Writers - Vince Clarke, Andy Bell

Top points - Shoat 20, Achabaan 19, Mango 18

From 1990, this was Erasure's fifth top 5 hit. It finishes four places higher than their other song, Chorus, did in the first semi-final.

46. Candy Flip - Strawberry Fields Forever 158pts

Writers - John Lennon, Paul McCartney

Top points - Jason 24, marcinjaro 22, Mango 20

This Beatles cover actually replaced Blue Savannah at number 3 in the chart for the last week of March 1990. Three further singles by Candy Flip charted in the lower half of the top 100 before they split up in 1992.

45. Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby 164pts

Writers - Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal

Top points - vibe 24, Campbell 23, Chapman 21

This does a lot better than Honey which finished 53rd in the other semi-final but Mariah is still a long way from qualifying for the final. Always Be My Baby was her eleventh number 1 single in her own country.

sad to see Lets Wait Awhile out, one of the most under-rated Janet Jackson songs

never heard about that other song that claimed to be similaR, gotta have to check it

EDIT: oh my it's identical :D

Edited by Bjork

Lets Wait Awhile and especially Always Be My Baby are so criminally low !!
