I'm not aware of anything that had more weeks before entering the Top 50 than that. If it still doesn't make the Top 40, I can't think of anything that had more than 32 weeks (jointly Imagine Dragons - Believer and that 45 King song which peaked at #60), so it could surpass those too. Although those pale in comparison to the 51 weeks spent in the Top 100 by Fatback Band - I Found Lovin' before it finally entered the Top 40 in 1987.

Wow at that run for the Fatback Band song - spending a full year bubbling under the top 40 only to then suddenly explode and make the top 10 in its third week in the top 40, then pretty quickly drop down and disappear. I'm really fascinated as to how that kind of run was able to happen.

Reckon it was a niche club sensation for a while then exploding, probably taking off in certain regions first - a bit like Phyllis Nelson's 'Move Closer' There was a comedy version of the same song by the late DJ Steve Walsh that hung around the lower part of the charts before rapidly entering the top 10 at the same time as the Fatback Band song and then dropping out similarly quickly. Maybe there was a big media buzz about the two different versions.

 

Although the Fatback band song is unusual re the sheer number of months it took to take off, it wasnt too uncommon for 80s hits to spend a good few weeks outside the top 40 but when they crossed that threshold to then rapidly take off presumably as the hit gets more exposure just by being in the top 40. Examples include Sinitta's 'So Macho', Jennifer Rush 'Power of Love', Strawberry Switchblade 'Since Yesterday' and Bangles 'Eternal flame'

Just realised also, Journey - Don't Stop Believin' reached the Top 50 after 32 weeks on the Top 100, so Martin & Gina would need a few more weeks to emulate that.

 

Aside: Don't Stop Believin' then climbed 52-19 after it was done by Joe McElderry on The X Factor. Ironically, his version of The Climb was eliminated from the recent 2009 round of the Buzzjack anniversary KO by none other than... Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
