As part of a move to reignite interest and to allow more lesser known artists to reach more music fans, the OCC have announced that the broadcast portion of the official chart will extend to a top 50 with Radio 1 extending the show to a 3pm start. The changes will come to effect in July.

April fool by the way but have changed title.

Isn’t it late in the day for an April fool?

Yes it is indeed an April Fool but I think because new artists and lesser genres find it harder to reach top 40 these days they should really consider extending the show to a top 50. Bicep are an example that would have benefited.
Sadly nowadays I think you'd have to extend the show to the Top 200 to get any significant exposure from it for less well-represented acts and genres!

ROSE and Jorja Smith would have been broadcast two weeks ago in a top 50 show, were 43 and 46 respectively, whereas Jorja fell to 61, ROSE is no longer top 100. Possibly also victims of Spotify's sexist attitudes.

ROSÉ was fuelled mostly by fanbase buys (she's a member of BLACPINK) while Jorja's song just hasn't caught on...

I think it's just a case of bad luck if a song misses out on a top 40 play. ACR already helps a lot of fresher music enter the top 40 quicker, the bottom half of the top 40 is generally the faster moving part already so extending doesn't really come with much benefit in my view.

Still does make any sense why chart on Friday as end of week is Sunday. Don’t have all new realises on Firday like use to some times come on Thursday witch does not make sense as lose sales
I wasn’t a fan of moving the chart from Sunday to Friday but I absolutely don’t think they should move it back at this point.

Most songs don't peak in week 1 anyway so coming out on Thursday doesn't matter. It's the label's choice if they want to "lose" a day of sales. It's on Friday to coincide with the global release day, and it's faaaar more sensible than what we used to have - albums would come out on Fridays in some countries, then not until Monday in others, and of course they all leak online! The move benefits albums more than singles really.

No, they already skip a load of tracks so with a top 50 they would skip even more.

But they would likely extend the show another hour.

No. I don't even followed the Radio 1 charts anymore after stopped listening to the charts because of Taylor Swift's YTNCD in 2019.
I would be hugely surprised if they got rid of the chart, it’s basically been an institution since the 60s on UK radio even if consumption now means it’s less relevant.

Interest in the singles chart is quite low, so I would say it should stick to a Top 40.

I think a Friday is a good day as people can listen to it at work if they are allowed a radio on, and the latter half on their way home if they finish at 5pm.

Much more likely than people bothering to tune in on a Sunday afternoon (though I recognise people did when it was more popular years ago).

I actually think they should reduce it to a Top 20 tbh and play each track in full
I pef listen to my own chart more this days to munch deadwood hang around

If the chart show were to play new stuff from the 41-100 region I’d probably tune in regularly, that’s where most of the good/interesting hits land nowadays e.g. Cloud 9, SugarCrash, Pierre, Your New Boyfriend...

They used to play the full top 25 when the chart first moved to Fridays before changing to the current format in 2017, much to most of Buzzjack's relief as the top 25 barely changed each week - particularly in the days before ACR. Even now it's still the most static part of the chart, naturally.

I think R1 have got the chart spot on right now. The full top 40 doesn't need to be played when the chart is slower than it used to be, but they play 99% of the new entries and notable climbers and they're the interesting parts. I don't think it needs to be shortened or lengthened, what we have right now is perfect for showcasing both the big hits and those on their way up.

(oh and I'd be gobsmacked if they cancelled the chart considering it's the biggest chart show on radio)
