Btw, the comparison with Katy makes no sense at all. Roar received twice the airplay that Applause received in the US, plus Katy performed Roar in several countries around the world for its promotion, while Applause's performances were in the US only. Applause was Gaga's first lead single to receive not even a single performance in Europe/Oceania, not to mention the fact that Katy's image was not on a hate train like Gaga's at the time.

The hate train started because of GaGa's pompous claims about having the albums of the millennium, and then following up those claims by ... releasing Applause :nocheer: There's a reason why they played Roar more: it's far better and far more commercial. Only Gypsy could have competed.

You clearly don't understand what irony is, she didn't say it in the literal sense, she was mocking the pressure the media was putting on her for hoping that ARTPOP would be something even bigger than Born This Way. Also, the hatred train with Gaga did not start in the ARTPOP era but rather earlier, the sales comparisons of her first albums with BTW, the religious controversies, the tireless comparisons with Madonna, the provocations of Madonna etc.

Starting an era with a lead single that speaks and raises the flag of minorities also didn't do well for her image either. Keep in mind that in 2011 there was no "Cancel culture" or this rampant militancy as we see today, it was literally Gaga and her fans against the world.

She didn't wait for her image to cool down to talk about these taboos, she took advantage of her media peak and went straight to the eye of the hurricane, and this, although it hurt her career, was praiseworthy and extremely important.

Yes, she started killing her career with the awful BTW album and bizarre singles campaign. JUDAS a single. JUDAS?! YOU AND I A EUROPEAN SINGLE?! BTW RELEASED MID WEEK MISSING OUT ON NO.1 EVERYWHERE?!?!?!!?! What a mess!!

1. Edge of Glory RELEASED ON A SUNDAY

2.Born This Way RELEASED ON A SUNDAY

3. SheiBe

4. Marry the Night with REAL instrumentation

5. Hair Europe/ You and I USA

Done. 1 and 2 could be switched around, but I think Edge of Glory, with a very pared down video, would have been a bigger change in sound, and it's also one of her best ever songs, then go to BTW for her usual club stomper she's famous for ... all released on a Sunday to get to no.1.

Oh, I'd also have released Brookyln Baby on Artpop. Technically the first single would be Drank with Kendrick, THEN Gypsy, THEN DWUW, then Sexx Dreams or Brooklyn Baby. That would have been even better.

It leaked from Artpop II: The Artpopening. You should youtube it! It's cheesy, but good.

It's Brooklyn Nights, not Brooklyn Baby

Well, I can't be expected to remember everything! I'm sure she wanted to call it Brooklyn Baby anyway.
I think by the time the ARTPOP era was in full-swing it was obvious to everyone that she was trying too hard, plus it's undeniable the public perception of her was at an all-time low but I agree that had been building since the BTW era.
but I agree that had been building since the BTW era.

Besides that she spent 2 years without putting out new music after the end of the BTW era and Katy had released 3 singles and a movie in 2012, so her image didn't cool down to the public, she knew how to amend her eras, differently of Gaga that disappears and then appears out of nowhere, and that wasn't a good move for the charts at that time.

Unfortunately Gaga suffered from the accident and hip surgery, ARTPOP was expected to come out in Q2, at the end of BTW Ball and not in Q4, however, she should have released collabs in 2012, "Bitch" with Kendrick and a song with Calvin Harris or Guetta wouldn't hurt.

I can't help my mind from going there

| 01 // Sexxx Dreams // 9.10

It was a very tight, close-knit race, but 'Sexxx Dreams' edges it by a tiny amount! The song is inspired by Gaga's erotic fantasties and having a sordid fantasy about someone. More specifically, it was revealed that Gaga's gay tour chef had sex dreams about her! In the song Gaga has a conversation with different people, giggles at herself when she realises how sordid she has been and how twisted and fun her dreams actually are. The song was recorded at 4am in the morning, and Gaga alongside DJ White Shadow worked until 4 the next day. The pair worked and reworked the song until they got just the sound they wanted and the end result is a totally bonkers, fun, outlandish song about sordid, naughty dreams being awakened.

Here is what Gaga said about the song: "When I was working on it, started out as this mamba groove and we all just kind of spent a lot of time in the room together really, like, letting the groove, hypnotize us; and I started writing, and everyone will tell you when I wrote it, they just, didn’t really know where I was going with it for like three hours, they just, were just, not understanding. And then, once I hit the chorus, they were like: “Oh, yeah! I get it I get it I get it — it all makes sense...” Anytime we’ve tried to remove or replace different parts of the song, it just, never quite flowed the same way, and the chorus never hit as hard; so it’s a really special tune, it’s really a journey... I’m alternating between speaking and singing. And when I’m speaking, I’m talking to one person, and when I’m singing, I’m talking to the other, and then it reverses for the second verse. So, I’m talking to my boyfriend, who’s in the bed with me, or my girlfriend, whoever, and the other person that I’m talking to, is the person that’s in the sex dream. So, it kind of takes you through this journey through my mind, and then, at the end, it sort of gets you into that headspace of, thinking when I have a sex dream about somebody, then the next day I run into them: it’s going to be really awkward. So, it says, [lyrics from "Sexxx Dreams" “Watch me act a fool, tomorrow when I run into you, tomorrow when I run into you.” So, at the end of the song, kind of like, everything comes together; whether it’s the guy I’m talking to, or the lover, in my mind, the sex dream lover, in the end I’m thinking about how foolish I’m gonna be, whether or not I run into either of them. "

Thank you for doing this... and now moving on to BTW

Such a hectic time for Monsters recently  All these classics being celebrated on the internet so let's do the same on here! <3

I think, realistically, whatever singles were chosen the album would have probably suffered the same fate. The locals were mostly just tired of Lady Gaga. We would all like to pretend we had the correct recipe for success and could have managed the era better, but most artists that reach her level of success and notoriety do go through a rocky period — and then they either climb out of it and diversify their brand (which she did, fantastically) or they don’t and flounder.
