May 22, 20214 yr Loved the Thompson Twins when they were on TOTP a few years ago bbc 4 world - one of them bands that were around for two albums between 1982-85! They went all pop late in the new romantic era as they needed to make some money so put on the aul make up and tried pop!
May 22, 20214 yr Author Did 'With Ur Love' outsell 'Swagger Jagger' in total? Difficult to say I'm afraid- SJ was about 40k ahead at the end of 2011 but both are silver certified but not reached gold yet.
May 22, 20214 yr Author 86. OH YEAH (ON THE RADIO)- Roxy Music (93,000) #5 No 1 in 12 weeks in 1980 Back in the summer of 1980 a strike at the BBC caused TOTP to go off air during that summer which in turn made the “summer slump” in sales worse than usual. Its return in August in a new format helped record sales in general and may have played a part in the sales you have here with the top 4 clearing the 100k mark in that particular week. UFadTILdKqM
May 22, 20214 yr Author 85.MIAMI- Will Smith (94,000) #3 No 1 in 12 weeks in 1998 Ah the late 90s where a sale of almost 100,000 barely secured you a top 3 place. Will Smith of course trundled out a succession of top 10 hits which succeeded or failed on the strength of whatever the sample he used on a song, here he utilises the 1980 Whispers song “And The Beat Goes on” to sing the praises of the city, thank Boyzone and Cher that this went no further. May 22, 20214 yr Author 84. PARANOID ANDROID- Radiohead (94,000) #3 No 1 in 12 weeks in 1997 Penned as a “Bohemian Rhapsody” for the 90s, Radiohead’s return to the charts in 1997 was much anticipated with most commentators predicting this would become the group’s first No 1 after it received pretty much universal praise from the critics. That wasn’t to be (thanks Hanson) but it still flew off the shelves, the title is a reference famously to the Douglas Adams’ book “Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy” and ensured that “OK Computer” would become their first million selling album. May 22, 20214 yr What a great number 1 Paranoid Android would have been. I had to play a little bit of that Roxy Music song to remind me of it. I couldn't remember the tune from the title.
May 23, 20214 yr does anyone know what the top 3 was and what sales they all had when Paranoid Android was at #3?
May 23, 20214 yr does anyone know what the top 3 was and what sales they all had when Paranoid Android was at #3? Hanson and Eternal were the top 2. Don’t know about sales but they’ll have been over 100k.
May 23, 20214 yr according to wiki, Hanson opened with 260K, thats crazy, but of course Mmm Bop was huge but I think if they had waited til Hanson's final week at #1, Radiohead would have been #1
May 23, 20214 yr Author according to wiki, Hanson opened with 260K, thats crazy, but of course Mmm Bop was huge but I think if they had waited til Hanson's final week at #1, Radiohead would have been #1 Yes Hanson sold 86k in their third week
May 23, 20214 yr Author 83. RED BLOODED WOMAN- Kylie Minogue (39,812) #5 No 1 in 13 weeks in 2004 Kylie’s only song on the rundown I’m not sure if many recall that there was an “attempt” in the media to drum up some rivalry between this and Britney’s “Toxic” as they went head to head. In reality there was no competition with Britters romping home to an easy victory but maybe some sales were galvanised for Kylie judging by this sale in the annus horribilis of 2004, indeed its opening sales were only 4k lower than “Slow” which made No 1 five months earlier. 0MR9oJyTTOo
May 23, 20214 yr Author 82. YOUR GAME- Will Young (39,980) #3 No 1 in 13 weeks in 2004 Following on the trend of popstars writing hits for others (Karen Poole of Alesha’s Attic co-penned “Red Blooded Woman”) here’s an early Taio Cruz song that made good for Will Young. Following up “Leave Right Now” which was basically the song that was seen as two fingers up to Cowell and his control over Will’s initial career, it didn’t do badly at all arriving just two weeks after the Kylie track in the charts. May 23, 20214 yr Author 81.ACHY BREAKY HEART- Billy Ray Cyrus (42,000) #3 No 1 in 13 weeks in 1992 Back in the days when Miley Cyrus’ dad was a popstar this was his sole big hit, and what a hit, briefly launching a fad in line dancing and bringing C & W back into the top 10. A cover of the Marcy Brothers 1991 track this went top 4 in the US before crossing the Atlantic to get stuck behind Snap’s megahit “Rhythm Is A Dancer” among others. XbUUg9ZZE3w
May 23, 20214 yr God how I love Roxy Music, classic band! Least they returned to number one in 1981 albeit in awful circumstances.
May 23, 20214 yr Paranoid Android sold significantly more than I would have guessed, wow! Glad to see it make this countdown, it was a huge favourite of mine.
