June 15, 20214 yr That week was really unpredictable with so many huge names releasing - Adele, 1D and Rihanna in the same week. Loved that Ellie song too - no way near no.1 but easily one of her best before she blanded out.
June 15, 20214 yr Once again love all three of those and 'Suddenly' is legit one of my favourite 80s songs ever  I've always had a thing for a good power ballad (see also 'Alone' by Heart and 'Listen To Your Heart' by Roxette) and they don't make power ballads like that any more! Yeh been loving them on TOTP between 1986-91, so many of them! That Angry Anderson performance is hilarious though!
June 15, 20214 yr Looking at the top 5 on the week One Direction made it to #3, they were pretty far from Rihanna but only 400 copies away from PSY! Adele was a mid-week release... 1 E Diamonds Rihanna (105K) 2 1 Gangnam Style PSY (87.4K) 3 E Live while we’re young One Direction (87.0K) 4 E Skyfall Adele (84K) 5 E Anything could happen Ellie Goulding (49K) Some big hitters in that top 5!
June 16, 20214 yr Author 12.LOVE PLUS ONE- Haircut 100 (125,000) #3 No 1 in 24 weeks in 1982 With Nick Hayward’s good looks adorning the cover of “Smash Hits” early 1982 saw the group hit the height of their brief fame and was the only time they were capable of shifting this kind of volume on a weekly basis. June 16, 20214 yr Author 11.DOWN- Jay Sean (72,015) #3 No 1 in 26 weeks in 2009 From dance/Bhangra fusion of his initial top 10 singles way back in 2004 Sean had come a long way to sign with hip hop label Cash Money which allowed him to hook up Lil Wayne on this track which topped the US chart in October 2009. It became his biggest UK single beating “Stolen” by a notch. oUbpGmR1-QM
June 16, 20214 yr Author So we've reached what are, arguably, the ten unluckiest singles in UK chart history.
June 16, 20214 yr I've got one in my head from Sept 1991. It ended up as one of the 10 best sellers of the year but only reached number 3. I have no idea if it sold enough to be number 1 in enough weeks to make this chart. Likewise, there's a number 3 hit from 1999 that may feature here. Or may not. Edited June 16, 20214 yr by Colm
June 16, 20214 yr I think the one from 1999 will definitely feature. Not sure about the one from 1991 but I know which song you mean…
June 16, 20214 yr So the rest of these songs I’m guessing would have made #1 if they had been released in the majority of the alternative weeks in the year.
June 16, 20214 yr Oh, I just thought of one from 1994. And 1993 too. Edited June 16, 20214 yr by Colm
June 16, 20214 yr Know loads about 80s music but never had heard ‘Love Plus One’ so just listened to it now for first time. For such a big 80s hit I was expecting it to be a case of “Oh it’s THAT one” when I listened but seems completely unfamiliar. Must never get played much since release.
June 16, 20214 yr Yeah, Haircut 100 don't really get played much on the radio compared to other bands of their time. I remember being obsessed with that Jay Sean song for a while, that and 'Stolen' still sound great today  Edited June 16, 20214 yr by Mangø
June 16, 20214 yr Love Plus One is a good song but my favourite hit from Haircut 100 would be Nobody's Fool. I didn't think we'd get as far as 26 weeks. I wonder if the first placed single will have more than 30 weeks.
June 17, 20214 yr Author 10. 9 To 5- Sheena Easton (123,000) #3 No 1 in 27 weeks in 1980 From a lucky break on a BBC reality programme to the top of the US charts, Easton’s rocket to fame was truly breathtaking in 1980/81. This was her first sizeable hit on both sides of the Atlantic for the Scottish singer and another example of a US No 1 which only made No 3 here for local talent. sdPky0i7sx4
June 17, 20214 yr Author 9.THE HEART NEVER LIES- McFly (39,737) #3 No 1 in 28 weeks in 2007 Released in the same week as “Rule The World” and “Bleeding Love” it was perhaps inevitable that the 13th McFly single was never destined for the top. THNL opened with a sale higher than their previous single “Transylvania” which had become their 7th no 1 single just 6 months earlier. cd1ZuEL9i4M
June 17, 20214 yr I think the one from 1999 will definitely feature. Not sure about the one from 1991 but I know which song you mean… I am not sure of either because their sales might not have been 90% of the number 1 in those weeks. They spent so long in the top 10, they may never have had to sell 90% of the number 1 to end up in the top 10 best sellers of the year.
