99. TO THE MOON AND BACK- Savage Garden (93,000) #3

Ai9A5Sp.jpg

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1998

Not satisfied with its No 55 peak here the year before, and in the wake of the success of “Truly Madly Deeply”, the band decided to re-issue this. It was a good decision as it entered at No 3 with sales not far off 100,000, shame that two of the top 11 best selling singles of the year were in the top 2 that week.

Out of interest, what was Janet's highest weekly sale?

Together Again was a great single, one of the best pop tracks of the 90s and would have made a great #1

103k in the Christmas week.

Janet was at number 6 in Christmas week. I believe that's it was the first time the top 6 all cleared 100,000 sales. Late 1997 is my favourite period for sales feats. There was a week when the entire top 10 in the singles chart ended up in the top 40 sellers of the whole year

98.THAT DON’T IMPRESS ME MUCH- Shania Twain (109,000) #3

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1999

21 songs are on this list which sold over 100,000 copies in a week and failed to dent the top 2, the first up is the song that really propelled Twain into the A-League in UK pop at any rate. Remixed for international release the song spent 21 weeks in the chart of 1999- something approaching phenomenal, it also hit the shelves the same week as Geri Halliwell’s “Look At Me” and Boyzone’s “You Needed Me” both of which sold over 140,000 though in the long run this was by far the bigger seller.

97. CALL THE SHOTS- Girls Aloud (31,457) #3

Losing out by just 300 copies on the No 2 spot Girls Aloud can at least make this list, in a low sales year just 31,000 copies was enough to be the best seller in the land in 12 weeks of the year as the song saw a boost from an X-Factor performance. Considered for inclusion on “The Sound Of Girls Aloud” it was deemed too downbeat and was held back a year, it remains one of their finest moments.

96. GIMME MORE- Britney Spears (32,134) #3

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2007

This one was co-penned by Keri Hilson it came after a two year break from the music business which saw her become a mother, have a breakdown of sorts, separate from husband Federline, and face a barrage of bad press, this was her first release to see if her popularity really was dented by it all. A "memorable" performance at the MTV awards didn’t start things off too well but that opening line “It's Britney bitch” is obviously a classic. Anyway a return to the top 3 was secured after a three year absence though its release on a Tuesday may have affected that position, on the midweeks it moved top 75-top 20- top 10- top 5 on successive days.

Perfect demonstration of how sales were at such a high in the late 90s and such a nadir in the mid 00s.

Shania deserved #1 that week tbh, especially above Boyzone with yet another dreary MOR 70s cover.

Out Of Your Mind by Victoria Beckham. It should have been a two week no.1, but the press conspired with Spiller to stop her :(

LOL I swear you're obsessed with Posh's failed music career!

Anyway, Gezza has already stated that only songs which didn't make the Top 2 are going to be featured in this thread.

The days when 100k wouldn't guarantee #1 or #2, and that was just week 1 for Shania, never mind the long run in the Top 10 after that (which was very unlike 1999), so a very unlucky #3 all told.

I think that sale for Gimme More was from week 2 when it dropped to #6 - one of the new entries then above it must be still to come.
