There's no TOTP tonight so you're a week ahead now!

Oh, it's a shame - it's a killer ep which opens with SL2, and has Congress and Moby on. Rave takover!!

This was exactly 30 years ago, I think I like “The Fly” more than I actually would have done had it not ended Bryan Adams' run at #1 - it's a great song though. “Go” is obviously a classic for that Twin Peakes sample mainly, and it's weird seeing Moby with hair haha.

I don't think I've ever heard that U2 song

'Go' is indeed fabulous. In a way it's strange to think how in a decade's time he'd go on to become so absolutely humongous with the Play era #SpoilerAlert

:(

The Fly is messy, atonal, distorted noise and Bono's treated, lascivious vocals, plus THAT gut-curdling solo.

I never liked ‘The Fly’!

Didn’t realise Moby was charting as early as 1991!

The Fly almost sounds like a buzz single, not like a first single proper for the comeback of one of the biggest bands of the late 80s

What is really crazy is that U2 and Michael Jackson released their comebacks albums, Achtung Baby and Dangerous, on the same day

it's almost like if Adele and Ed released on the same day

Certainly a brave choice when they could have gone with One. I know which one I prefer.

When did buzz singles start? What are the more famous ones?

I like the fact that unlike most rave tracks of the time, Moby's Go, because of those chilled out and atmospheric synths that dominate the song, doesn't sound so jarringly different in mood to the non-rave stuff in the top 10.

Buzz singles basically were lead singles that flopped and then were demoted to buzz single :D

cannot recall the first one...

I am just wondering whether much if any of the rave songs would have been played at the time in late 1991 on daytime Radio 1. Gezza has hinted in some of his posts that a lot of them relied much more on nightclub play or being played at raves to chart than radio airplay. Even the high charting ones like the debut hits for The Prodigy and 2Unlimited I wouldn't imagine to have been played much during the daytime on radio - they would sound odd played after calmer tracks

I think they were played but they would have came through the clubs first especially at the beginning of the rave era in the late 80s. Radio 2 nowadays is pretty much what radio 1 was like up to the mid 90s. One minute they play the new Sting or Rod Stewart single the next the dance pop hit by Becky Hill!

9TH NOVEMBER

We waited 16 weeks for a new number one and then in the space of three weeks we have three different chart toppers. U2 are bounced off the top 1-2 (45,000) and in being demoted it becomes just the third track ever (and second this year) to debut at No 1 and spend just 7 days there. The new chart topper is the 15th track to hit the top in two different versions, Tommy Roe in 1969 and now Vic Reeves & The Wonder Stuff take “Dizzy” all the way to the top. Selling 64,000 last week it only increases sales by a fraction but that’s easily enough to see it outpace the opposition but it will face a test this week with Reeves’ album “I Will Cure You” in shops now.

With half term over sales are in a general slump, 2 Unlimited hold at No 3 (44,000) and even Bryan Adams sticks at No 4 (41,000) and Kiri Te Kanawa digs in at No 5 (35,000) but all are receding in sales week on week and indeed the latter must be fancied to fade fast with the Rugby world cup now over.

When it debuted at No 19 last week “If You Were With Me Now” became the lowest debuting Kylie Minogue single since her introductory single “I Should Be So Lucky” in 1988. Coupled with the No 16 peak of her last single “Word Is Out” it all pointed to a career in trouble and ever diminishing chart returns, but her new single zooms 19-7 (23,000) to become a 14th top 10 single from 15 attempts, it’s actually a duet with US singer Keith Washington who has his first hit but clearly it’s Kylie selling this song, she doesn’t appear to be able to sell albums any longer with her fourth LP “Let’s Get To It” peaking at No 15 and slumping 18-27 this week.

When first released in April this year “Rhythm Is A Mystery” peaked at a meagre No 61 on independent label Creed, it’s now been picked up by Deconstruction and makes a much more impressive splash by debuting at No 8 (22,000). The group met at the Hacienda club in 1988 before supporting 808 State en-route to the charts.

Genesis improve 9-6 (26,000) whilst both Monty Python and The Scorpions are heading out of the top flight as they fall 7-9 (21,000) and 6-10 (20,000) respectively.

1- DIZZY- Vic Reeves/ Wonder Stuff (64,000)

2- THE FLY- U2 (45,000)

3- GET READY FOR THIS- 2 Unlimited (44,000)

4- (EVERYTHING I DO)- I DO IT FOR YOU- Bryan Adams (41,000)

5- WORLD IN UNION- Kiri Te Kanawa (35,000)

6- NO SON OF MINE- Genesis (26,000)

7- IF YOU WERE WITH ME NOW- Kylie Minogue & Keith Washington (23,000)

8- RHYTHM IS A MYSTERY- K Klass (22,000)

9- ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE- Monty Python (21,000)

10- WIND OF CHANGE- The Scorpions (20,000)

Dizzy and Rhythm is a Mystery are both quite good, the Kylie and Keith Washington song is nice enough, my favourites in that top 10 though remain Genesis and 2Unlimited.
I actually dont think ive ever seen moby with hair either :)

Kylie's 4th album was such a let down

there's just one song I like, Finer Feelings but the rest is not very good

PWL had already lost it

Rhythm Is A Mystery I used to always get confused with Xpansions - Move Your Body because it says 'move your body' in the chorus!

The Prodigy's Charly must have sounded very unusual to many listening to TOTP at the time. It must have been a big surprise to many at the time that it was such a big hit.

Sunshine on a Rainy Day is a rather cheesy pop song I think, but good all the same.

Charly is such an amazing left field Top 3 single!
