May 23, 20214 yr I really want to see the UK just try and send something that stands out and has a bit of an 'edge' for once. Whether it's something like Frock Destroyers or going for a more niche style like metal/punk or even drill/grime (just imagine xx) - even if it ended up doing just as badly as all our bland pop entries they might at least be a bit more interesting to get behind. I haven't hated the UK's recent entries but legit the only one that I have been interested in was Electro Velvet just for it being a bit leftfield even if it didn't pay off. It won't happen tho obvz. Yeah a drill track or else something like Camelphat or Tom Zanetti maybe, the UK is famous for its rap music and dance music scenes at the moment.
May 23, 20214 yr The Shires have posted a poll asking whether they should go for 2022, and they are signed to BMG! I think they could do pretty well
May 23, 20214 yr I miss Bosnia. They had so many incredible entries and I’m always here for as many Balkan songs as possible. I really cannot imagine Eurovision without them tbh!
May 23, 20214 yr The EBU really made sure that Italy was surrounded by semi final televoting flops in the final. I'm sure it's just a big coincidence...

May 23, 20214 yr Funnily enough, back in January I believe it was, I said a band like Nothing But Thieves would be a great choice for the UK (before it became clear that rock was the in sound with the public this year!) I couldn’t envisage a band like that or Wolf Alice/Pale Waves etc doing too horribly, as they have so much stage presence and would appeal to similar demographics as Italy’s winner. Trying to sign up an act like that to represent us would be one challenge while the other would be trying to get the BBC to budge from their stubborn MOR bland radio pop formula. But something like Impossible by Nothing But Thieves would suit their audience well anyway, while not being bland, so there is definite potential to tick all of the boxes with an act like that. We do need to take some (good) musical risks to start stirring emotion in people to get them to pick up their phones for us - it doesn’t get any worse than double nul so what’s the point in continuing to play it safe? Unless the BBC are petrified of accidentally winning because they don’t want to have to pay to host. Edited May 23, 20214 yr by gooddelta
May 23, 20214 yr We need to have a positive result before credible bands like Wolf Alice (they wouldn't) even think bout Eurovision. They'd really have nothing to gain from it and everything to lose at the moment from just not "doing too horribly." Of course if you just mean smaller bands with the sound of NBT & WA etc, then yeah there's gonna be loads who would jump at the chance!
May 24, 20214 yr "credible bands". Jeez this Eurovision stigma is running so deep in the UK that it's preferable to announce you have genital herpes over participating in the contest.
May 24, 20214 yr There's also a risk that even if you get a band like that, probably aiming to do well with the juries, they could then fail to give a really outstanding song and come away like Hooverphonic did, average enough, but nothing that would encourage any similar acts to ever take a chance. It's not just credible we need, and in fact that'd be hard and risky for future prospects - brash and exciting might be less difficult if the BBC can be shocked out of their one-note dull pop song stupor. If it's possible to be inspired by Italy's victory, I think we need to do that, get something that the public across Europe will like, before trying to go for jury bait. essentially my wishlist is Bring Me The Horizon, or indeed, yes, Alestorm. I also saw an idea on Twitter from our former poster Qassandra that sounds good to me on the surface, rotate entry control among the BBC radio stations - from 6music to 1xtra to Asian Network, to increase the chance of entry diversity and finding something interesting and new that the public across Europe might back.
May 24, 20214 yr I've heard PC Music thrown around for us, *that* would be a moment if done well! Would probably never happen though
May 24, 20214 yr 'Wellerman' would've been a fun entry had it been an original song. Add "sea shanty" to the list of niche styles the UK should consider (unpopular opinion? idk)
May 24, 20214 yr Or even, forgive me, while the union lasts, rotate control among the four nations - their BBC stations who would then have the ability to pick any artist they like but would likely gravitate towards one from that country. When was the last time we had an entry that wasn't English in nature and style? A couple of Welsh artists, Bonnie Tyler and Lucie Jones - who incidentally have gotten two of our better results, and yes, 19th is a better result, but no Scottish or Northern Irish that I can remember, and I wouldn't call either Tyler or Jones particularly representative of any sort of traditional style the same way that entrants from other countries often show off their localised culture, whether that be Sami joiking, Udmurt grannies or Sranan Tongo from the Netherlands. Even send an entry not in English - hit up Gwenno for a Welsh or Cornish song. That would shock Europe, particularly after the way Amanda Holden just confirmed all their stereotypes about us being boorish monolinguals. 'Wellerman' would've been a fun entry had it been an original song. Add "sea shanty" to the list of niche styles the UK should consider (unpopular opinion? idk) Cornish sea shanty! We could definitely get something like that together, where is that band of fishermen from Port Isaac when you need them?
May 24, 20214 yr "credible bands". Jeez this Eurovision stigma is running so deep in the UK that it's preferable to announce you have genital herpes over participating in the contest. Yep, we don't need "credible bands" from UK, just nice 3 minutes we can relate and vibe to.
May 24, 20214 yr We need to have a positive result before credible bands like Wolf Alice (they wouldn't) even think bout Eurovision. They'd really have nothing to gain from it and everything to lose at the moment from just not "doing too horribly." Of course if you just mean smaller bands with the sound of NBT & WA etc, then yeah there's gonna be loads who would jump at the chance! Wolf Alice funnily enough just jokingly changed their Twitter profile pic to a pic of Måneskin! I reckon a couple of those acts actually would be up for it, especially after seeing the success of the rock songs this year (and the European exposure/ability to sell out gigs continent wide that Måneskin/Blind Channel will now have), but that their record labels would probably veto it, and of course even if they offered the BBC would still probably say no due to having Jason Donovan down as first choice. Shying away from major acts though, I'm sure there are literally thousands of smaller but decent bands and musicians in the UK who could write a great three minute song that would snap up the opportunity to perform on the world's biggest stage given half the chance. I also saw an idea on Twitter from our former poster Qassandra that sounds good to me on the surface, rotate entry control among the BBC radio stations - from 6music to 1xtra to Asian Network, to increase the chance of entry diversity and finding something interesting and new that the public across Europe might back. This would be a fantastic idea. There is quite literally nothing to lose, so it's absolutely time for the BBC to take some chances. I've heard PC Music thrown around for us, *that* would be a moment if done well! Would probably never happen though I reckon that could be amazing or a car crash. I do fear that could translate like Montaigne's Technicolour did, depending on the performer, albeit that was more hyper pop. There are literally so many popular genres in the UK we could send to represent us that it stings so much that we end up with beige happy pop every year. Even send an entry not in English - hit up Gwenno for a Welsh or Cornish song. That would shock Europe, particularly after the way Amanda Holden just confirmed all their stereotypes about us being boorish monolinguals. I would absolutely love something like this, I feel if the contest was handed to Channel 4 this sort of thing is exactly what we'd do every few years but there's no way the BBC would. May 24, 20214 yr As an aside, you just KNOW that if/when Scotland gain independence they'll become an immediate and well-loved Eurovision force - I could see them being super creative! I agree with Iz on the England heavy aspect to our entries, it should definitely rotate - at least so Wales/Scotland/NI get at least one entry every decade with full creative control to the local BBC from those nations on those years. May 24, 20214 yr Im fully here for an independent Scotland sending some enchanted sea witch from Tiree singing in an archaic form of Gaelic. We‘ll see you all at the SSE Hydro the year after ;)
May 24, 20214 yr Or why can’t we send an entry with a Caribbean or Asian vibe, a chance to show our other cultures we don’t normally send
May 24, 20214 yr Or why can’t we send an entry with a Caribbean or Asian vibe, a chance to show our other cultures we don’t normally send Yes or a country vibe. Something different needed next year and not another ballad. Think those are doomed to fail for us.
May 24, 20214 yr Caribbean vibe could work, its like for Ireland i was thinking would a good country number 1, not Irish didilie country but something on the lines of the Common Linnets that the Netherlands had in 2014.
