Do we think if the three track rule didn't exist, drivers License and Brutal would both be top 10 as well?
I'm really enjoying Kiss Me More today :cheer:

Blimey @ The Weeknd.

For the longest time I thought they weren't even going to release 'Save Your Tears' as a single, imagine what a huge mistake that would have been.

I remember initially when I thought 'Save Your Tears' would get drowned out (just like 'In Your Eyes' did) by the colossal never-ending hit that is 'Blinding Lights' - how far its come  So deserved too. What a song.

Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” - Apple Music

Biography

hi there! my name is olivia! I’m 18 years old and writing songs is my favorite thing to do in the world. I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember and I fall more in love with it every day. The first song I ever got published was called “All I Want.” I wrote it for a show I act in and it was a super cool experience that opened up a lot of doors for me. On the last day before Covid lockdown, I met the team at Interscope/Geffen records and a producer named Dan Nigro for the first time. It turned out to be a very momentous day for so many reasons. I spent most of quarantine writing songs in my living room and producing them in a garage, including ‘drivers license’. It was always a really special song to me but I never expected the response it got. It absolutely blew my mind and I still to this day refuse to believe it all actually happened. The day I am writing this is actually the day that I turn in my debut album! I’m sooo excited for you to hear it and I feel so grateful that I get to make music for my job. - Spotify

Biography

Lil Baby

The story goes that Lil Baby (born Dominique Jones in 1994) didn’t even really want to rap. He’d had encouragement—Pee and Coach K, the Atlanta kingmakers/Quality Control heads who helped launch Migos, had been on him since he was a teenager hustling dice in the street—but Baby wasn’t interested. But two years on a possession charge gave him more time to think than he wanted. Then the work came fast: Within a year of starting to rap, he’d released six mixtapes and a full-length album, 2018’s Harder Than Ever. (Young Thug, an early booster, paid him to spend time in the studio instead of the streets.) Compared to his Atlanta peers (Thug, Gunna, Migos, etc.), Baby’s persona was muted: He shrugged off fashion shows, didn’t have tattoos (he didn’t want potential business partners from the buttoned-up, white world thinking he was something he wasn’t), and kept his boasts mild: “I never call myself a G.O.A.T./I leave that love to the people,” he raps on “Emotionally Scarred.” But the lyricism was there, as were the low-key intensity and no-frills ethic that have become his hallmark. By the end of 2020, he’d been nominated for a Grammy, made the chart-topping album My Turn, and was named Artist of the Year at the Apple Music Awards. “I don’t wanna be comin’ from where I come from all the way right here to be a nothin’,” he told Apple Music around the release of My Turn. “I feel like I’m past that stage.” - Apple Music

Lil Durk

Back in the early 2010s, Durk Banks was just another rapper making his way in Chicago drill, a bleak, diamond-hard variant on trap that channeled the city’s culture of violence into unlikely anthems. Drill—and the label frenzy that surrounded it—faded, but Durk evolved, becoming one of the rare rappers able to make the leap from regional fame to the mainstream without diluting his street appeal. Painful, raw, but eerily pretty, Durk’s music can turn death threats into nursery rhymes (“Die Slow”) and coax shades of suffering from Auto-Tune that make even the slickest productions breathe with vulnerability (“Turn Myself In”). He doesn’t sugarcoat it. But you get the sense he isn’t putting on too much of a show, either. Born in Chicago in 1992, Durk started rapping in his teens, building local popularity through mixtapes before landing on Def Jam in 2012. His debut album, Remember My Name, came out in 2015, followed by Lil Durk 2X. Though he forged his reputation on drill, Durk proved unexpectedly versatile, a rapper who could slip between dead-eyed rawness and Auto-Tuned melodicism, and handle a love song (“India,” “My Beyoncé”) without making it sound like it was a mandate from the label. He left Def Jam in 2018, asserting his independence on a spate of mixtapes before joining Geffen Records with 2020’s Just Cause Y’all Waited 2. - Apple Music

Lorde

Solar Power

1st single from Solar Power

Released: 10th June 2021

Label: Universal Music New Zealand

Biography

Where previous generations of teenagers frequently had to endure middle-aged marketing managers’ ideas of what entertainment should look like, millennial teens were #blessed with one of pop culture’s greatest young laureates: New Zealand’s Ella Yelich-O’Connor, a.k.a. Lorde. After being spotted at a talent show and signing to Universal at age 12, she quickly chewed through a series of writing partners until she met Joel Little, a fellow Auckland native and former pop-punk frontman. Together, they wrote “Royals,” a song that not only defined her perspective—with its unimpressed, teenage dismissal of material obsessions—but also propelled her skeletal electro-pop debut, 2013’s Pure Heroine, to a Grammy nomination. She captured the late-night trains home, clandestine kisses, and heavy symbolism of your first love remembering to buy your favorite juice—little of which, she seemed to know, lasts. But Lorde’s feel for suburban adolescent disconnect catalyzed into precocious power moves—such as curating the soundtrack for the third Hunger Games movie—and an astute lens on the wider world on 2017’s Melodrama. Richer in sound and experience, the album found strength in different kinds of isolation: the temporary plight of the newly heartbroken and the lifelong fate of the writer. - Apple Music

2nd single from It'll All Make Sense In The End

Biography

The heavily tatted, broad-shouldered young man brooding on the cover of James Arthur’s first two albums might look more like a bruiser than a crooner, but that combination of grit and sensitivity defines this British pop phenomenon’s soulful singing style. Before he conquered the UK, Arthur—who was born in Middlesbrough in 1988—sang for a series of rock bands from his mid teens into his early 20s, and in 2011 he began operating under his own name, blending pop, soul and hip-hop influences and releasing songs on YouTube and SoundCloud. Arthur’s life was forever altered the following year when he competed on Season 9 of The X Factor, winning with the Shontelle song “Impossible”. Shortly after, Simon Cowell’s Syco label released the single, which became a record-breaking blockbuster and transformed Arthur—24 at the time—into an instant pop star. Both Arthur’s second single, “You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You”, and his self-titled debut album blasted off to huge success, and it became obvious Arthur was sticking around. His 2013 follow-up, Back from the Edge, became an even bigger success than its predecessor. Arthur continues to expand his sound, evidenced on his third album, 2019’s You, which features visits from American hip-hop artist Ty Dolla $ign and members of Taking Back Sunday and Blink-182. - Apple Music

Save Your Tears - just when we all thought it had peaked at #11, then on its first week or two in the Top 10... pretty sure it's at its peak now though!
I remember initially when I thought 'Save Your Tears' would get drowned out (just like 'In Your Eyes' did) by the colossal never-ending hit that is 'Blinding Lights' - how far its come  So deserved too. What a song.

Wonder if the amazing 'In Your Eyes' wouldhave been a top 5 hit if released a bit further apart from his mega hits.

Me: pleased that hosting today went quite smoothly

Also me: realises I never posted the "missed the top 40" song  coming in a sec for all you massive Lil Baby & Lil Durk fans xo

Youve been great as ever!

More variation and a wider mix of genres on the chart is one positive at the moment. Just take the high new entries and climbers this week. Love them or hate them, the Billie, Måneskin, Calvin & Arrdee tracks are all a completely different sound from each other. Montero, Body & Good 4 U all very different #1 singles.

Wow at Save Your Tears *.* I remember loving it last year and thinking 'this sounds like Circles pls release it and make it a hit!'

Also props to Abel pulling the big name remix move as the #2 peak here wouldn't have happened otherwise, genius!

Wonder if the amazing 'In Your Eyes' wouldhave been a top 5 hit if released a bit further apart from his mega hits.

It really deserved it! One of my fave songs of last year.
