17. JASON’S SONG (GAVE IT AWAY)

AVERAGE SCORE: 5.33

INTO YOU: dannjohn (10), jsweetxe & George.keh (8)

BAD DECISIONS: 152Chris (2), Tawdry Hepburn, blacksquare, Cremey & HausofArgento (3)

Unsurprisingly, the first to drop out is one of the bonus tracks and finishing with the wooden spoon is Jason’s Song (Gave It Away). Originally only available as part of the Japanese Special Edition or Target Special Edition of the album, it was added to the streaming versions, alongside Step On Up, last month in honour of the album celebrating half a decade in existence.

The song’s title is a tribute to the track’s co-writer, Jason Robert Brown, a legendary Broadway composer who as well as working on this song has also collaborated with Ariana on the show 13: The Musical and later on a special Covid livestream concert that turned into his 3rd solo album ‘Coming From Inside The House (A Virtual SubCulture Concert’.

Jason’s Song received pretty much universal low scores with the absolute lowest being a 2 from 152Chris. However, it started and ended well with two 8s in from the first 4 votes and concluding with something that three other songs couldn’t even manage to get, by receiving a 10 from dannjohn. I’m not too surprised to see this one up last because it doesn’t really fit in with the sound of the rest of the album at all. It’s very jazzy and is quite a nice song but it just not a Dangerous Woman track.

Pretty predictable last place, it's not a huge favourite or anything but it deserved a bit better than that, it had some pretty nice instrumentation. Where was this negative energy against the bonus tracks in the 'positions' rate :kink:

Hoping that 'I Don't Care' will be the lowest of the main album tracklist (I mean it's not my least favourite but obviously 'Side To Side' isn't going to be this low)

16. I DON'T CARE

AVERAGE SCORE: 5.85

INTO YOU: Tawdry Hepburn, gog_lad84, LewisGT, dannjohn (7), Tafty, JosephStyles (6.5)

BAD DECISIONS: Bré, HausofArgento (4), George.keh, 152chris, Jade, Cremey (5)

Avoiding last place but also a spot in the top 15 is track #11 'I Don't Care'. This position is not too surprising for a song that is often branded as 'filler' on the forum, whether in the survivor event from last year or at either of the two listening parties we've hosted.

Remember when a duration of 2:58 was the SHORTEST song on an Ariana album? Ah, those were the days. So at least this one is over pretty quickly for those who are not too keen. The forum may not be collectively jumping for joy about this song but it's easy to see why it's special for Ariana. The lyrics present quite a personal story of her growth over the years. It's about finally getting to a place where you are no longer phased by what others think. She is now content just doing whatever she wants. Good on her! The song is backed by grandeur strings and brass instruments that fit in well sonically with the rest of the album. But the tempo does not shift at all, so it feels a bit meandering.

The highest scores that 'I Don't Care' received were 7s and the lowest 4s. So nothing too glowing or scathing - giving us a very average overall score of 5.85!

Yeah both of those are pretty inessential

Good x

'I Don't Care' is the 'six thirty' of this album - it's not exactly bad, just extremely bland and hard to see why it wasn't left on the cutting room floor.

Good start to these results, Jason's Song (Gave It Away) was my least favourite in this rate and I Don't Care was next. I don't mind it but it just feels dull in comparison to the rest of the album.
Not a shock at all to see I Don’t Care our early. I was expecting it to finish above Step On Up though.

Speaking of which...

15. STEP ON UP

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.2

INTO YOU: Nina West (9), jsweetxe, George.keh, Slick, JackTheeStallion (8)

BAD DECISIONS: chris152 (2), blacksquare (3)

Arguably it's unsurprising that our next out is the other Target (and 2021 re-release) Bonus Track 'Step On Up'. The track was finally added to streaming and download services last month to celebrate 5 years of this masterpiece album. Upon release it managed to enter the top 100 on iTunes and has since garnered over 1 million streams on Spotify already.

The tracks popularity was aided greatly by a viral mash-up with 'Gimme More' which has over 20 million YouTube views.

With its 'New jack swing' genre which includes heavy use of brass instrumentation, it's easy to imagine 'Step On Up' being included on the original 'Moonlight' album which presumably would have included 'Focus' to which it shares a similar flavour. Personally I feel that with a little tweaking it could have made a great opening track.

Ari has been quoted saying she doesn't like the song because she thinks it's boring. (Shocker.) She hates so many of her own songs, I can't!

We had a huge difference in top and bottom scores with 'Nina West' as it's biggest fan, giving a very generous 9 and another four of you giving a very respectable 8. On the other end of the spectrum 'chris153' and 'blacksquare' don't fancy it as much giving pretty brutal scores of 2 and 3 respectively. Scores were pretty much all over the place with most people rating it a 7.

Still no shocks.

Deserved top 10... if mixed with 'Gimme More' :kink: it is my favourite of the two new additions at least.

This was the exact bottom 3 I was expecting tbh so I agree that we've had no shocks so far!

'jasons song' is literally top 5 Ariana for me... baffling it's the LOWEST! Especially when 'be alright' and 'step on it' are some of the worst songs she's ever recorded.
