A Saudi Arabian takeover of Newcastle United is close to being agreed.

Approval from the Premier League could possibly come in the next 24 hours after a consortium proved the Saudi state would not have control of the club.

Instead the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is set to provide 80% of funds for the £300m deal, will be seen as separate to the state and therefore allow the takeover to pass the Premier League owners' and directors' test.

It was believed that a resolution came after Saudi Arabia settled an alleged piracy dispute with Qatar-based broadcaster beIN Sports, which own rights to show Premier League matches in the Middle East.

A complete joke, if anyone thinks the Saudis and the PIF are seperate entities then I wish I was that naïve through life! Let's hope Newcastle get relegated now.

We'll get the 'wishful thinking' fans that big names will join Newcastle United. Wasn't it Venkys with Blackburn Rovers where they tried to get Raul, David Beckham, Ronaldinho?

Hah yeh, do they have £ like the City owners do?

They're already the richest club in the Premier League now. This is different to the Venkys as Newcastle are owned by a State now, similar to PSG and Man City. Easy attempt to sportswash. I think it will take them a while to be competitive at the top, but it really not surprise me if this again pushes either a salary/wage cap in to football or the European Super League rears it's head again. Love to see how Liverpool, Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenal react to this.

If the "fit and proper person" test cannot exclude a consortium led by someone implicated in the murder of a journalist (and countless other human rights abuses), what exactly is the point of it?
How long do y'all reckon it will take Newcastle to win the Premier League after this?

Well it took Man City 4 years, I'd suggest at least double that, they need a complete new team and manager. They might get lucky in that Pep/Klopp are leaving in a couple of years. Anyone that goes there currently is a mercenary, they're not gonna be getting Mbappe or Haaland. Suspect they will get someone like Coutinho/Draxler in January on massive wages. I

With luck, their first task will be to get Newcastle back into the Premier League after relegation this season. Ideally, they will be firmly in the bottom three by the time the transfer window opens in January.

Fingers crossed, although I can't see Bruce lasting too long to be honest. Just not sure how they will be able to cook the books as easily as Chelsea/Man City did to get a big name in.

Yeah I agree that any player that goes to Newcastle now is a mercenary. It was a similar situation with Man City though, in the season they got taken over Robinho was the only star player that they had and he joined at the same time oil money hit the club's bank account. They didn't qualify for any European competitions in the 2008/09 season but they were still able to get Carlos Tevez, Kolo Toure, Patrick Viera and Emmanuel Adebayor the following season. Europa League qualification was good enough to get David Silva, James Milner and Mario Balotelli amongst others in the season after that and the rest is unfortunate history for English football.

With Chelsea when Roman Abramovich took over they had already qualified for the Champions League and had a good squad that would win the odd cup here and there. Which is probably why the success was more instant for them.

Yeah but let's not forget too that Robinho signed for City by mistake as well. They will sign someone big in January, but I can't see it being a star player or someone who all the other big clubs want. Success will come as it's proven that it does with the oil money, but I'm not sure Newcastle can cook the books as easily as City did in the early days.

City after the oil money came in was like a bimbo after having won the lottery, their transfers were utterly laughable for the most part.
Arsenal defender Ben White is currently trending on Twitter for saying that he doesn't watch football. I think it's a concern if a professional footballer doesn't watch their own sport. It would be like a movie actor or actress not watching any movies to pick up useful techniques or information.

I don't really see why it should make any difference, ultimately football is a job and there's nothing to say someone doing that job has to enjoy or even take an interest in it outside of that. He's made a huge season-on-season career progression and clearly learned a lot from doing that as well as putting in the work and dedication required to make it to the top level. There's no reason why he needs to have any interest in watching Everton v Villa and Spurs v Newcastle on Sunday whilst his team isn't playing over pursuing other things.

I'm sure an actor would learn from others and watching other performances whilst researching for a role, but it'd be fine for them to have no interest in going to the cinema or spending evenings watching Netflix in their own time.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto was like that, even more so. Hated football but it was a job and he got paid a lot to do it and that was that.
I suppose it's good for rival teams that he doesn't watch football. I wouldn't want him to know the weaknesses of the likes of CR7, Paul Pogba & Bruno Fernandes prior to a trip to the Emirates Stadium
Who was the Aussie Blackburn player who didn’t like football, used to like breaking players legs?
