Definitely +2M on spotify and ~200k units in its debut week. Aunts and mothers are ready!

If you really think Adele got her sales through “aunts and mothers” that’s ridiculous. You don’t sell 30+ million physicals and downloads of one album then follow up with 25million off such a niche market.

She performed Glastonbury and everyone was eating it up, her fan base is very varied.

Love it if Adele deliberately chose that week to remind him who the Queen Bee of the UK charts is!

Her singles chart record isn't particularly anything to write home about to be completely honest. Only 8 weeks at No 1 compared to Ed's 55.

Whereas over in the US, she has had considerably more weeks at #1 with singles (7 weeks with 'Rolling In The Deep', 5 with 'Someone Like You', 2 with 'Set Fire To The Rain' and 10 with 'Hello'). A little bizarre considering how monstrously successful the albums were in the UK that RITD was never a #1, SFTTR never even made the top 10 and Bieber shunted 'Hello' off the top here months earlier than he did in the US. I guess the Hot 100's inclusion of airplay has a big part in that difference.

Looking back Rolling In The Deep is a surprising non-#1 but it ran into a massively hyped Bruno Mars song (who was also a HUGE deal at the time).

Set Fire To The Rain however is even more surprising but I don't personally remember it being that massively played over here? Kinda like a Ellie Goulding - Lights situation imo it just resonated more in the US more for some reason. I don't remember if (lack of) promotion etc. had anything to do with it...

I think that "suffered" from the album having sold a shitload already (and this was before streaming), otherwise it would've peaked a bit higher. although it had a veery long chart run regardless [24 weeks top 40]

Yeh knew that SFTTR just missed the top 10 but a song with 24 weeks in the top 40 is a huge hit despite the peak!

I always remember ‘Hometown Glory’ being the song that introduced me to Adele in 2007 when it didn’t chart and thinking it deserved to be massive, hence it’s charting just in the top 40 following ‘Chasing Pavements’ success the following January then getting a proper release post album! Then famously ‘Make You Feel My Love’ a little know Bob Dylan cover charting at 26 as a fourth single from the debut in late 2008 then being the track that transformed her and led the way for the second album in 2011 to be massive when it was performed on XF in 2010 and recharged in the top 3!

Her singles chart record isn't particularly anything to write home about to be completely honest. Only 8 weeks at No 1 compared to Ed's 55.

I think it's fair to say that's pretty much down to circumstance, and also how sparsely she releases music.

Lol at the Ed stans, that's a bullshit comparison if there ever was one, maybe look at album sales instead lol

Ed Sheeran - 26 million

Adele - 31 million

Even when you do it's not like she's leaps and bounds ahead.

Cheesy, atrocious warbler, commercial puppet, Ed bloody Sheeran, is unfortunatrly bigger than Adele in thr UK, just like Westshite were bigger than the Spices in thr UK. Worldwide, no contest, however.

let's see what Wikipedia has to say about that

Edward Christopher Sheeran MBE (/ˈʃɪərən/; born 17 February 1991) is an English singer-songwriter, record producer, musician, and actor. Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling music artists.[7] He has 84.5 million RIAA-certified units in the US,[8] and two of his albums are in the list of the best-selling albums in UK chart history: × at number 20, and ÷ at number 34. In December 2019, the Official Charts Company named him artist of the decade, with the most combined success in the UK album and singles charts in the 2010s.[9]

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins MBE (/əˈdɛl/; born 5 May 1988) is an English singer and songwriter. She is one of the world's best-selling music artists, with sales of over 120 million records.[6] After graduating in arts from the BRIT School in 2006, Adele signed a record deal with XL Recordings. In 2007, she received the Brit Award for Rising Star and won the BBC Sound of 2008 poll. Her debut album, 19, was released in 2008. It is certified 8× platinum in the UK and triple platinum in the US. The album contains her first song, "Hometown Glory", written when she was just 16, which is based on her home suburb of West Norwood in London. An appearance she made on Saturday Night Live in late 2008 boosted her career in the US. At the 2009 Grammy Awards, Adele won the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
As things stand at this moment in time, there is no way on Earth Ed Sheeran is bigger than Adele in the UK. Just because he's been more prolific in her absence doesn't make him bigger than her.
Streaming. Compare physical sales. Streaming isn't real and just inflated people's figures by ridiculous amounts.

That's pretty impressive for Adele considering she's released one less album and only ~14 singles. Ed's released like 3x the amount of singles than Adele including features. It'll be interesting to see how much she closes the gap by with her new album. She'll likely outsell Ed's album by double worldwide. Hopefully her album and singles break streaming records too - I have a feeling she's going to have an absolutely massive spotify debut.

To be fair this album cycle will be the first time the two titans are going to get equal contest on exactly the same terms since their early career, with Adele's last album cycle being before some of the biggest changes (caused by Ed himself) to the chart rules. So might be the best chance we get to see how they stand against each other.

With both Ed and Adele from the UK is it not nicer to look at things from the point of view that arguably the worlds 2 biggest artists are from the UK with both having massive amounts of success.

Yes I’m not really an Adele fan but ‘Hometown Glory’ is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and by far the best song of hers I’ve heard (rather atypical of her sound sadly). Had 3 runs in the top 40 though and 21 weeks in top 75 and that was all before she became massive,

I know she has fans of all genders and ages, it was just a joke.
