I'm not sure she will end up going more experimental - I'm going to imagine the directive on her next album contract will be '19 or 21 not 25 or 30'

To be honest I think Adele is one of the very few names signed by majors who can do whatever she wants, due to simply how much profit she brings to the label, even with this “underwhelming” debut.

Absolutely it's subjective. I think it may actually be my favourite album of hers. 19 was okay but nothing spectacular for me. 21 had a strong opening run of tracks but then nothing much until Someone Like You. 25 is also patchy for me. 30 is the first one where I'm enjoying everything on it to some extent or another.

I think something that is worth noting with Adele is that "25" wasn't on Spotify when it was first released, so even in addition to it being 6 years since she last put out an album, even back then there's been a built in standard of not listening to the new Adele album on Spotify on release. I've been tempted to be inclined to say this might also cut significantly into her sales for all the people (myself included) who bought "25" because of this exclusivity, and no, these aren't contradictory statements, a sale is worth so much more than a stream, but I'm waiting to see the sales numbers themselves*.

*Though even then, how it sells over the next 5 weeks probably matters just as much as the initial figure.

Lmao so Adele hasn't broken the daily streaming record, it's hardly a career ending flop when she has all of the Top 12 on Spotify.

Glad Oh My God is now her second highest behind EOM it's far better than My Little Love or Strangers By Nature!

she’s still going to have three songs in the top three this week! what a flop
Do we know how the album is doing on Amazon? I have a feeling she may do more on Amazon + Apple Music than Spotify in streams.

Not sure about Apple Music but I do have a feeling she could do better than most on Amazon. I know there generally aren't album bombs on Amazon due to the charts moving slower but given how quickly Easy On Me went to #1 there, I think Adele will perform well with this album.

Yes as mentioned in the other thread, the whole album was top 30 on Amazon yesterday except the lowest track at #35, and it's rare for singles to even debut that high there. Saying that, = had a very similar if not slightly better opening day, with Visiting Hours the 3rd highest track at #7 helped by being established by then, and Overpass Graffiti at #9. The next 8 tracks did similar to Adele's 5th-12th on day 1, although those fell away quickly and it remains to be seen if Adele's will do the same.

Right now on Amazon:

1 Easy

9 Strangers

11 My little love

12 Oh my God

14 I drink wine

19 Cry your heart out

21 Can I Get it

25 To be loved

26 Parking

28 Hold on

29 Woman like me

36 Love is a Game

it's similar to how Ed did (I think)

I'm surprised the lowest two songs are 'Hold On' and 'Love is a Game', hopefully that will change and it's due to their placement on the album. They're two of the standout tracks for me. I would've thought that 'Hold On' would be an Alexa favourite too, being on the Amazon advert, but when I ask my device to play it, it plays 'Hold on' by Chord Overstreet instead!!!!!!

I love the album as a cohesive collection of material but do miss the immediacy and sing-a-longability of tracks like 'Rolling in the Deep' and 'Set Fire to the Rain'. Maybe I'm misremembering and they weren't immediate at the time, but have become ingrained in my brain over the years.

Tbh I don't think almost anyone's expectation was that 30 was going to sell anywhere near as much as 25, that just isn't feasible in today's market even for Adele who is usually in a league of her own with album sales. It's the same with Ed Sheeran, it has to be taken relative to the current market. Sure it may be a sign that they are no longer at the peak of their imperial phase, especially for Ed who did quite a bit less than general predictions, but that's different to been a complete flop.

I'm still expecting Adele to outsell ABBA and do over 300k which would be the highest sale since Divide's first week in 2017 and honestly I think the absolute ceiling of what you can expect to sell with any album in the streaming era. When we hit January/February and some indie album with a dozen vinyl variations gets to #1 on 8k sales and falls to #92 the next week, Adele & ABBA and even Ed and Coldplay's sales will look a lot better in context.

The album physical market is as dead as a dodo and Spotify users are not exactly known for their love of women singing 6 minute ballads, so Adele has done about as well as can be expected.

For sure I agree, and I think the same was true for when "25" was released in comparison to "21", but my expectations were also just partially tempered because of "25"'s roll out strategy which squeezed out more pure sales that it would otherwise have gotten given the standard roll out. So I think Adele is doing absolutely fine all things considered, I just had lower expectations I guess.

I found this for Ed Friday evening:

#3 & #14 Shivers

#4 & #28 Bad Habits

#8 Visiting Hours

#13 Overpass Graffiti

#15 Tides

#17 First Times

#29 The Joker And The Queen

#33 Leave Your Life

#42 Collide

#45 2step

#50 Stop The Rain

#56 Love In Slow Motion

#61 Sandman

#69 Be Right Now

Adding up positions and dividing by number of tracks, Adele has each song at average ~19 and Ed ~30. So I think she's doing better than him, but he had more tracks. Hopefully she'll keep climbing and maybe even get a big boost from tomorrow's special.

Let’s not forget either that Adele has a whole itv special on Sunday night! That will boost her sales further! She did amazing yesterday

112k pure, no vinyls and no streams, her streams are way bigger than Ed’s and not being funny she sold more than Ed’s first week on the first day when you include her streams etc

I don’t think anyone ever really compared the two?

I really think some perspective is needed here :

The market isn’t what it was when 25 released so anybody expecting a repeat of that .. well, was always going to be disappointed.

Her whole album is top 12 on Spotify .. and her lowest song has been streamed 419,000 times - if a SINGLE by another artist managed those number we’d all be calling it a success.. and these are album tracks. So I’m really unable to understand the people calling any of this a disappointment.

We’ve had one of the biggest bands and 2 of the biggest solo starts of our generation all managing roughly the same ish.. - they’re not underperforming - they’re performing very well for the current climate. Because it has changed. End of.

IMO

Also - she’s had her peak era. So has Ed .. people generally have that peak in their career - they can’t keep performing the same forever

She's definitely had an album boost for Easy on Me globally. It's most streamed day globally since 18 October.

Preach.

Preach.

I agree but I did expect after EOM did 2.9m first day some of her album tracks would be over a million two, perhaps I just listened to people saying ‘Adele doesn’t follow the industry norms in terms of sales’

She is still going to do 300k plus, absolutely fantastic

Yeah tbf I did expect myself that some of her album tracks would cross a million on the first day, I think we're all just used to her been on a different level. -_-
