Quick update, up to 25 voters now! First eliminations should be tonight!
Votes sent! Apologies for leaving this so late. That was an absolute bloodbath... can't believe the quality of some songs I had to cut out!
Been meaning to do this properly, watched the recaps to remind and refamiliarise myself with some I've not heard in a long time. 36 songs I rated 8/10+ so shouldn't be too difficult to whittle down to 30.

VOTING IS CLOSED!

Thanks to all 31 voters in the end! First eliminations tonight....

First eliminations tonight....

Hopefully We Are The World will be one of them! :teresa:

I hope Shaddup Your Face and I Know Him So Well go out quickly because they stopped two songs I really like from going to #1. Even though I Know Him So Well is admittedly quite good.

This is an interesting website I found reviewing every 80s number 1. This person reviewing then doesn't seem to like much  and I disagree with many of their opinions but reading it made me realise many things I never noticed such as how 60s soul and Motown influenced a lot of the 80s number 1s eg. Wham's 'Freedom' and Spandau Ballet 'True'.

The front page is 1989 but the numbers 1 to 9 on the left side have his reviews of the other years number ones!

NO 159- ZERO POINTS

pY4oFuQ.jpg

Coward Of The County Kenny Rogers- No 1 for 2 weeks in February 1980- No-one brave enough to give this any points?

Nw3Mulk.jpg

Dreams Of Children The Jam- No 1 for 3 weeks in Mar/April 1980- First of 6 Jam entries and perhaps lack of familiarity didn't help

6TBETTk.jpg

Theme From MASH MASH- No 1 for 3 weeks in May/June 1980- Blame Noel Edmunds for this one- cheery

U2BwyHF.jpg

Start The Jam- No 1 for 1 week in September 1980- Another Jam tracks fails to get any points- maybe it's too near the Beatles "Taxman" for comfort?

lC4ytlP.jpg

There's No-One Quite Like Grandma St Winifred's Choir- No 1 for 2 weeks in December/January 1980/81- Our first festive chart topper falls out the rate

jU20WXW.jpg

Woman John Lennon- No 1 for 2 weeks in Feb 1981- We're not here for Lennon's ode to Yoko it seems

iqiFfkm.jpg

Being With You Smokey Robinson- No 1 for 2 weeks in June 1981- Some big names on the zero pointers list include this one!

iqX3p2O.jpg

One Day In Your Life Michael Jackson- No 1 for 2 weeks in June/July 81- and talking of big names- not many bigger than Jacko but 1 of his 3 chart toppers is gone already.

aASUa0q.jpg

Green Door Shakin Stevens- No 1 for 4 weeks in August 1981- Shaky has three left now but no love for this track

r5i5XGm.jpg

Begin The Beguine Julio Iglesias- No 1 for 1 week in December 1981- Enrique is clearly better....

J30026L.jpg

Precious The Jam- No 1 for 3 weeks in February 1982- Only 1 side of this double A Side is getting points- The Jam have now scored zero points with half their entries.

aL3gw4X.jpg

Ebony & Ivory Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder- No 1 for 3 weeks in April/ May 1982- Both have other entries thankfully.

Gncqqcc.jpg

Pass The Dutchie Musical Youth- No 1 for 3 weeks in October 1982- Something of a sensation at the time given their age and the mildly controversial inspiration but you don't care it seems

abnRvd8.jpg

Candy Girl New Edition- No 1 for 1 week in May 1983- 83's only zero pointer for this boyband who gave us Bobby Brown

RskDsM6.jpg

I Should Have Known Better Jim Diamond- No 1 for 1 week in December 1984- and this is 84's sole entry in the zero list- yes he should have...

Another 22 chart toppers from 85-89 tomorrow.

FORGOT TO MENTION: AS PER USUAL- PLEASE DO NOT POST HOW MANY POINTS YOU HAVE AWARDED ANY SONG UNTIL THE REVEAL OF THAT SONG

Poor Smokey, when Smokey sings, unlike the band ABC, Buzzjack didn't hear violins :( It's a nice tune, one of the songs where the verses are much more well known than the chorus.

I agree with this review below that the I-I-I-I-I-I is jarring on Jim Diamonds' 'I Should Have Known Better':

The rest of the song I find OK though.

As for 'Ebony and Ivory', it has a good message behind it but yes both artists behind it definitely had more interesting songs melodically.

Ooft, Pass the Dutchie wasn't too far from my votes, I rather enjoy it :o Not a whole lot else worthwhile there though (I haven't heard a lot of them anyway x)

Ooh thanks for this, I love these reviews of every number 1, Goddammit though at him giving up at 2006 -_-

There's one here that's been going on over a decade, and is wonderful but has slowed down a lot recently and still has 18 years to go :kink:

This is a recent one that seems to be moving much faster and is even published, though still only on 1978 for now.

Interestingly most of the zeros are from 1980-82 which had a lot of no1s with older 70s connections! I don’t miss many of them!

You should read his comments on Band Aid 2 and Jive Bunny 😂

Ouch! Some of those songs don't deserve zero points, namely Woman,Start & Being With You😂

No major losses in that lot, although i'm not sure Pass The Dutchie or Green Door quite deserved zero points.

I'm not surprised the Michael Jackson track has gone, I still find it odd that this was his first UK #1. Not Rock With You or Don't Stop Til You Get Enough... this utterly forgettable record. Of all the Lennon in 1980-81, Woman is the lowlight and prevented the truly fantastic In The Air Tonight from being #1.
