Oh Julie is a good tune, I probably would have given it a point or two had I voted.

Don McLean - Crying is a nice one that I almost gave votes, but I do prefer the Roy Orbison original

or the duet version between Orbison and kdLang

The only one I like of those is Edge Of Heaven.

I blame Band Aid II for inspiring the idea that a concept can be poorly rehashed countless times as long as it’s for charity… an example of this legacy will be back to haunt the charts next week! :kink:

back in the day Jive Bunny was seen as a sorta Ladbaby/Robson & Jerome

that a silly mashup could take the record for artist with 3 #1s out of their first 3 singles like FGTH

Three crap acts mentioned in one post.

The mystery of Robson and Jerome spending endless weeks at #1 and blocking the likes of Common People and Wonderwall is surely one of the greatest in musical history.

The MOR factor it was almost certainly down to, Robson and Jerome appealed to the over 40s!

Really enjoy ‘Edge Of Heaven’ great wee bop!

Is ‘Crying’ the song from the famous Only Fools and Horses episode?

I much prefer Band Aid IIs version to the original one.

Edge of Heaven is really catchy too.

Not a fan of the other 2 revealed yesterday.

Mistletoe & Wine Cliff Richard (Voter: Last Dreamer)- No 1 for 4 weeks in December 1988

The festive No 1 of 1988 makes its exit- it is however Cliff’s most popular No 1 of the decade so that’s SOMETHING.

Happy Talk Captain Sensible (Voter: Steve201)- No 1 for 1 weeks in July 1982

Creating chart history at the time for climbing 33-1 but these days it impresses only Steve201.

Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) Paul Young (Voter: Gezza)- No 1 for 3 weeks in July/August 1983

Young’s only No 1 is roundly rejected by you all (criminally so).

Happy Talk and Wherever I Lay My Hat are both good songs. I prefer Come Back And Stay and Love Of The Common People as singles from the No Parlez album.
Wherever I Lay My Hat I like, while Paul Young's version is a bit of an MOR ballad, and I generally don't like that genre much, it is quite atmospheric production wise (the synths remind me a bit of Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You), its also another yet early 80s hit with prominent use of bass guitar, bass guitar really was everywhere in the early 80s. It's a cover of a 1962 Marvin Gaye song which I didn't know it was until recently, and its a further demonstration of how influential 60s soul was in the 80s.

I never liked Wherever I Lay My Hat as a kid. Much preferred Love of the Common People.

Happy Talk... Meh.

All I ever think of with Mistletoe and Wine is Cliff swaying his arms around a little too enthusiastically.

Paul's version of Love of the Common People sounds like it inspired Noah and The Whale's L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N too - those two songs always remind me of each other!

Happy Talk isn't great imo by 1982 standards, which is one of my favourite years for the UK charts.

Mistletoe and Wine is OK but I prefer Saviour's Day and its panpipe production.

Was it released in the 70s? Always thought Mash ended around the start of 1980!?

The movie version was the hit in 1980 (released 1970) but the instrumental TV theme version was the popular version - hearing it with words was a novelty in 1980. Painless was a dentist who got depressed when he got dumped so they held a mock suicide funeral party for him in the movie - hence the meaning of the lyrics. Very dark comedy film...!

Aww love ‘Happy Talk’ happy my votes helped it off 0 points, love it!!
Happy talk is a fun version of a movie classic, and Paul Young's version is better than marvin gaye's original which is far too jaunty, at least Paul sounds a bit sorry that he's a wanderer....

I much prefer Come Back and Stay from Paul Young's debut

and Every Time you Go Away from his 80s singles

I remember being his greatest hits From Time to Time and that was a solid GH

Shuddup Ya Face Joe Dolce Music Theatre (Voter: Last Dreamer)- No 1 for 3 weeks in February/ March 1981

Vilified for holding Ultravox’s classic “Vienna” off the top, Last Dreamer has forgiven it anyway.

Is There Something I Should Know Duran Duran (Voter: Jester)- No 1 for 2 weeks in March/April 1983

A bit of a shocker that 80s icons Duran only managed to get single figures with this one but out it goes.
