Thank you to everyone who entered the sixth Chart Forum quiz in the current series - Song Title Anagrams!!

Animation_of_the_anagram_'Programmed_animation_=_In_time,_anagrams_do_romp!'.gif

We have 12 participants:

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, Riser, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon, PeteFromLeeds

That’s about a lower turnout than last time I hosted one of these, but it means big leaderboard points for those in the game! :cheer:

Now for the ZANIER SWIM QUEST -> QUIZ ANSWERS TIME!

(‘Q’ and ‘Z’ are the only letters that didn’t appear in any of my anagrams, so I got them in here.)

First a few summary stats:

There were 243 correct guesses for the 30 anagrams – an average of 8.1 on each anagram.

8 people picked up some points from the bonus questions.

4 anagrams were correctly guessed by all 12 people, and 2 of them with the correct artist for each.

As for the least correctly guessed anagram(s), let’s wait and see...

I’ll have all the results posted tonight. First three answers on the way!

1. PLUG HIT IT

-> LIGHT IT UP - Major Lazer (feat. Nyla)

Top 40 debut 2015 | Peak #7 (2016) | Letters 9 | Guessed by 12

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, Riser, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon, PeteFromLeeds

2 points (all 2 point answers are without an artist, unless stated)

rio309

I have no idea if this anagram has some slang meaning, but thought it a reasonably straightforward one to start with, and so it proved as everyone got the anagram right – the song being the slow-burning follow-up hit to Lean On. The OCC only credit Nyla as a featured artist and not Fuse ODG (inexplicably), but as long as you got Major Lazer, I gave you 1 point for getting the lead artist anyway.

2. LET LIES LIFT

-> FEEL IT STILL - Portugal. The Man

Top 40 debut 2017 | Peak #3 (2018) | Letters 11 | Guessed by 9

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon

This was an even slower-burning hit but it peaked higher and gave the band, originally from Alaska, their UK only chart appearance.

3. A LORRY MOVING US

-> YOUR LOVING ARMS - Billie Ray Martin

Top 40 debut 1994 | Peak #6 (1995) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, StoneDragon

Now we go further back in time – not quite a one-hit wonder, but the only time Billie Ray Martin made the Top 20 was when her 1994 hit came back with a remix a few months later. Fred Again.. recently reworked this as Billie (Loving Arms), so I thought it might be in the collective conscience.

4. VOLLEY ON

-> ONLY LOVE - Ben Howard

Top 40 debut 2012 | Peak #9 (2013) | Letters 8 | Guessed by 12

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, Riser, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon, PeteFromLeeds

Our first full house of titles and artists! Ben Howard’s Top 10 moment came when he performed this song and won two awards at the 2013 Brit Awards.

5. USUALLY I OPT NOPE

-> I PUT A SPELL ON YOU - Sonique

Top 40 debut 1998 | Peak #8 (2000) | Letters 15 | Guessed by 6

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, LewisGT, StoneDragon

2 points

Ansel

Singer and DJ Sonique got her big breakthrough in the US with her other minor UK hit of 1998, It Feels So Good, before it went to UK #1 on re-release, then this was one of two Top 10 hits which followed. It is a much-covered song, dating back to 1956, and with Nina Simone’s 1965 version surely the definitive one, but only Sonique’s reached the Top 10 in the timeframe for this quiz!

6. MARTIN BUCKET

-> TURN BACK TIME - Sub Focus

Top 40 debut 2013 | Peak #10 (2014) | Letters 12 | Guessed by 10

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, Jade, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

2.5 points

chrissmith276, dandy*, Ansel, rio309 [Aqua - Turn Back Time]

Now the first song title which belongs to two artists for whom it was a Top 10 hit since 1991… Aqua is a valid answer, but as their song doesn’t fit the theme of the quiz, they only score 0.5 points! The full point instead goes to Sub Focus - their song of this name was their joint highest peaking and final chart hit.

7. DRIVE ELEVEN ROUTES

-> TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES - Flip & Fill (feat. Kelly Llorenna)

Top 40 debut 2001 | Peak #7 (2002) | Letters 17 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Riser, n4yr, LewisGT

Not the most well-known song in the quiz, but the vocals of Kelly Llorenna (see also N-Trance’s Set You Free and Forever) set this apart from the slew of tacky dance covers in this vein which swiftly followed.

8. FRESH ICONIC PANS

-> PRINCESS OF CHINA - Coldplay & Rihanna

Top 40 debut 2011 | Peak #4 (2012) | Letters 15 | Guessed by 8

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

A collaboration between two of the biggest artists of the last 15 years was destined to smash, and sure enough made its chart debut as a cherrypicked album track before the single treatment took it to the upper reaches a few months later.

9. ROUND UP JAM

-> JUMP AROUND - House Of Pain

Top 40 debut 1992 | Peak #8 (1993) | Letters 10 | Guessed by 11

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, Riser, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon

So many great lines in this!

Going well so far - although about to go down hill!!

I had completely forgotten about that Flip & Fill song. I think I managed to find the words Love and Dies but the rest wouldn’t come to mind!!

It was going so well with all of the first four right *.* I only know 'Your Loving Arms' thanks to Fred again... sampling it a couple of months ago so that was good timing :kink:

Glad I picked the right 'Turn Back Time'!

10. OUR DUES

-> U SURE DO - Strike

Top 40 debut 1994 | Peak #4 (1995) | Letters 7 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Jade, Riser, n4yr, StoneDragon

More 90s dance :w00t: This was based around a sample of Donna Allen - Serious. The second shortest anagram in the quiz, thanks to the shortened “U” in the title.

11. HELP NO TEE

-> TELEPHONE - Lady Gaga (feat. Beyoncé)

Top 40 debut 2009 | Peak #1 (2010) | Letters 9 | Guessed by 10

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon

A good old Countdown conundrum, and the obligatory Lady Gaga answer in this quiz.

12. NUT TO PUNCTURE ONION

-> TURN ON, TUNE IN, COP OUT – Freak Power

Top 40 debut 1993 | Peak #3 (1995) | Letters 18 | Guessed by 5

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, n4yr, StoneDragon

Back to the 90s again, and if you took part in Doctor Blind’s Only Connect in week 3, this came from one of the many projects of Norman Cook (more on him later) which made up one set of clues. I think this song was in a Levi’s advert, although I don’t remember that and first heard it on The Chart Show (the Saturday morning videos programme) before its re-release.

I think my very all-over-the-place attempt at explaining part of the connection may have some relevancy but the number of letters for each one being pointed out makes me think I was partly off.

13. MODESTLY BOOMED

-> SOMEBODY TOLD ME - Killers

Top 40 debut 2004 | Peak #3 (2005) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 7

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

And here is the greatest #3 hit ever, according to this year’s Buzzjack rate!

14. PON DE REPLAY, RIO

-> ORDINARY PEOPLE - John Legend

Top 40 debut 2005 | Peak #4 (2012) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 8

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

This song has nothing to do with Rihanna (nor Rio de Janiero, nor rio309) – instead it’s by John Legend, whose three subsequent UK Top 10 hits are infamous for various reasons, but this one soared to become his first after it was sung on The Voice by the only contestant from that show who most people have ever heard of (i.e. Becky Hill).

15. SHEERAN HITS IN FUN THEATRE

-> THE SUNSHINE AFTER THE RAIN - Berri

Top 40 debut 1994 | Peak #4 (1995) | Letters 23 | Guessed by 5

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, n4yr, StoneDragon

My favourite anagram in the main quiz :D I bet some here were thinking “if I went to the theatre and they started playing a load of Ed Sheeran hits, I wouldn’t find it much fun, in fact I’d probably ask for my money back” Anyway, this song’s original release was credited to New Atlantic / U4EA featuring Berri (euphoria, geddit), but the push which landed it in the Top 10 came when it was credited only to Berri.

16. THE MILLENNIA KING

-> KILLING IN THE NAME - Rage Against The Machine

Top 40 debut 1993 | Peak #1 (2009) | Letters 16 | Guessed by 9

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon

The infamy of this one. Back in my pre-chart listening days of 1993, Bruno Brookes played the uncensored version on the chart show, oops… then 16 years later it transcended the Top 10 position its cult popularity would surely have afforded it in that era anyway, by smashing its way to Christmas #1 thanks to a campaign to break the 4-year winning streak of The X Factor :cheer: this led to one of the longest Buzzjack chart show threads in the process!

17. AT MILESTONE

-> ONE LAST TIME - Ariana Grande

Top 40 debut 2015 | Peak #2 (2017) | Letters 11 | Guessed by 8

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

1 point

Riser [salt One Time] – I’ll say that’s close enough for a point!

There had to be an Ariana answer, and this is probably still my favourite song of hers too.

18. NICE TOFT

-> CONFETTI - Little Mix

Top 40 debut 2020 | Peak #9 (2021) | Letters 8 | Guessed by 10

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, rio309, StoneDragon

The group have had an eventful year, to say the least, since this first charted as their album’s title track.

A poor run for me there getting 0 for a while! Of course Ariana brought me back, good choice of favourite song of hers also *.*

19. PATRIOTIC RIDE

-> I PREDICT A RIOT - Kaiser Chiefs

Top 40 debut 2004 | Peak #9 (2005) | Letters 13 | Guessed by 6

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT

Some might suggest Ruby is the Kaisers' signature tune, but it’s definitely this one for me – it’s the song that got the best reaction when I saw them live in 2007!

20. ROD SHAKER

-> DARK HORSE - Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J)

Top 40 debut 2013 | Peak #4 (2014) | Letters 9 | Guessed by 9

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

rio309 [Dark Shore] – near enough for a point!

One of the standouts from Katy’s last #1 album.

21. MORN TUNE

-> TURN ME ON - David Guetta (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Top 40 debut 2011 | Peak #8 (2012) | Letters 8 | Guessed by 11

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT

2.5 points

chrissmith276, dandy*, rio309, StoneDragon, PeteFromLeeds [Kevin Lyttle - Turn Me On]

Here’s another title which would be a legitimate answer for two different songs, although not the Riton one as that didn’t reach the Top 10. Kevin Lyttle’s song did, but it’s the Guetta / Minaj collab that fits the theme! If you haven’t already worked it out, as a clue this song had a very similar start to chart life to Dark Horse above.

22. THE BRIGHT TUNES

-> U R THE BEST THING – D:Ream

Top 40 debut 1993 | Peak #4 (1994) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 4

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, n4yr

It’s now impossible to mention D:Ream without also saying that one of their members was none other than Professor Brian Cox. That aside, they are best known for their #1, Things Can Only Get Better, which I could have used in this quiz, but opted for this one instead. With 4 correct answers, it's the least guessed anagram so far!

23. HITCHED LOVER BARK

-> HOLD BACK THE RIVER - James Bay

Top 40 debut 2014 | Peak #2 (2015) | Letters 16 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

Like his other Top 10 hit Let It Go, this was huge in and around 2015.

24. BOLDER FOR KNITTING THEM

-> DRINKING FROM THE BOTTLE - Calvin Harris (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Top 40 debut 2012 | Peak #5 (2013) | Letters 21 | Guessed by 6

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT

One of the longer anagrams in this quiz but a fairly low effort by me to produce it. This was one of 9 Top 10 hits from Calvin’s 18 Months era if we count We Found Love, a total which even then was beaten by a 2017 album which housed 10 of them among those fun Sheeran hits.

Annoyed with myself for not getting the theme completely correct, especially as I had noticed the trend and somehow didn't translate it - I should have spent more time on this instead of rushing last minute :(

25. SWING

-> WINGS - Birdy

Top 40 debut 2013 | Peak #8 (2015) | Letters 5 | Guessed by 12

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, Jade, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon, PeteFromLeeds

2.5 points

chrissmith276, dandy*, Riser, rio309 [Little Mix - Wings]

The anagram was simple enough, but whose Wings fit the theme?

Not this time for Little Mix – instead it’s Birdy whose song got a second wind when it was featured on an advert.

26. OX NURSING UDDER

-> SIX UNDERGROUND - Sneaker Pimps

Top 40 debut 1996 | Peak #9 (1997) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, Jade, n4yr, StoneDragon

The things this could have been an anagram of… Fortunately, instead it’s a great song which I actually forgot had made the Top 10 until I was preparing for this quiz!

27. WHY HOG IT ALL, EH?

-> HIGHWAY TO HELL - AC/DC

Top 40 debut 1992 | Peak #4 (2013) | Letters 13 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, Ansel, n4yr, LewisGT, StoneDragon

Unquestionably one of their signature tunes, this only made #56 in 1979, and it took a live version to bring it into the Top 40 thirteen years later. It got another big time placing at #40 when their whole catalogue was released to iTunes in 2012, but only the year after did it improve on the live version’s peak, as it was the subject of another Christmas campaign, giving them a first Top 10 hit a full 35 years since their chart debut.

28. GO ON FAUNS

-> SON OF A GUN - JX

Top 40 debut 1994 | Peak #6 (1995) | Letters 9 | Guessed by 7

3 points

Mangø, JulianT, chrissmith276, dandy*, n4yr, rio309, StoneDragon

A lot of 90s dance in this quiz, so apologies if you hadn’t heard of them all, but many songs of that ilk seemed to lend themselves to the theme!
