In cases like Bobby Helms and Burl Ives I agree (having said that, Jingle Bell Rock was at least pretty well known in the UK despite not charting until a few years ago), although I have heard radio start to pick up Feliz Navidad in the last couple of years, which is interesting as that must be an effect of playlists pushing it to higher prominence and then radio responding due to the supposed increased popularity. Now it is genuinely becoming more popular (I see it's currently top 40 on iTunes for example), so it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What a difference! He actually sounds pretty decent here, he should have just went solo like this with no auto tune, instead of going with D-block where he just sounds horrific with the mad auto tune and garbage lyrics.

 

For me the auto tune is part of their 'so bad they're good' appeal!

I'm not sure, but in terms of widespread airplay I'm certainly starting to hear it on other stations and in shops now, which I can't say I ever did before the last couple of years.

'Feliz Navidad' does well on downloads recently as well for what it's worth. Currently the 6th highest old Christmas song on iTunes (before accounting for the ones with multiple versions so likely a few places lower than that overall but still higher than its relative position on streaming).
I'm not sure, but in terms of widespread airplay I'm certainly starting to hear it on other stations and in shops now, which I can't say I ever did before the last couple of years.

 

It broke in the US before here I think, being bilingual probably means it gets heavy rotation in many areas.

It looks like it's going to be really pretty hard for anyone to establish a new Christmas classic going forwards. Leona, Kelly and Ariana all just nipped in at the end of the download era but it's not going to be an easy task for new Christmas songs to gain major streaming traction, unless maybe they blow up on TikTok like Sia's Snowman.

 

Not that the DSPs help things either if they're not going to give the new songs a decent placing on their Christmas playlists. I did notice Ed and Elton are at least fifth on Spotify's Christmas is Coming playlist, but it will definitely be interesting to see how high this song returns in future years and whether it will get decent playlist support or just disappear.

Yeh true, Ed has the best chance as he’s in his prime at the moment and he’s struggling to gain decent streams albeit he’s going to No1 for at least one week. Xmas classics will build more over time now, maybe the SCR rules mean they will continuously sell well in the following years!
Yes it should go top 40 at least next 2 years - maybe they'll have different versions with guests on a la 'Perfect'.

It is so frustrating these old playlists on Spotify have such an impact. All we need is for these to be updated like they do all their other major playlists but the biggest ones haven’t had a proper update in the last 2-3 years. For all the bad rep Alexa gets, at least Amazon put new tracks in the mix each year so there is some variety each year.

But do people wanna hear those new songs? There is a reason, why that Jess Glynne song isn't charting this year.

 

Christmas is all about tradition that has been built throughout the years. There will be new classics but it'll take at least ten years.
