Thanks very much all for entering. I think this was a pretty tough one, with only around half the songs being from this century and only a couple from the last few years (with the recent ones in fact proving to be some of the toughest).

The track was played 143 times, 8.4 per participant. That’s 2 more than my last NMTB quiz, indicating that this one was harder I think!

As usual many of you did brilliantly! However, I was quite pleased that none of you managed to fathom every part of the quiz. Every part was answered correctly by someone though.

G4 – Bohemian Rhapsody

#9, 2005

Yes I was very mean and started the quiz with a banana skin. Obviously everyone got the title but some of you either thought it was Queen or knew it wasn’t Queen but couldn’t place it. Other incorrect artist guesses included Il Divo (another “popera” boyband so close) and The Muppets. I think I prefer The Muppets’ version to the horribly oversung G4 one!

Those who thought this was Queen also understandably thought it would be the most guessed, but counting every incorrect artist as a 0.5 it fell some way short!

Daft Punk – Digital Love

#14, 2001

This was the follow up to the iconic “One More Time” (well actually the excellent non-hit “Aerodynamic” was between).

Gorillaz – Dirty Harry

#6, 2005

The third single from the “Demon Days” album, I’d say this one doesn’t quite have the magic of its predecessors “Feel Good Inc” and “Dare” but it’s still pretty darn good.

Ke$ha – Die Young

#10, 2005

Yes this was our favourite dollar sign artist. I had never realised before how similar the intro sounded to “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida, which a couple of you unfortunately thought this was!

Muse – Hysteria

#17, 2003

The follow-up to the glorious “Time is Running Out”, I thought this was a pretty tough one to identify with only the flurry of guitar to go on but many of you managed it!

My first thought for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was the Muppets version too so can see why others put it  thankfully remembered G4 in the end!

Happy to have got the first 4 - don't think I'm familiar with that Muse song.

And I was one of those oops. That explains a few things too...

Otis Redding – (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay

#3, 1968

I was surprised to discover this was never a Number 1 given how well remembered it is and how good it still sounds. And I hadn’t realised that there were waves rippling in the intro until now!

Elvis Presley – It’s Now Or Never

#1, 1960

Now would you believe it this was the biggest selling single of its year, the 9th biggest selling single of the whole 1960s and I think Elvis’s only million seller, and yet most of you didn’t get it! But will this be the least guessed or will something else later have scored less?

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

#7, 1991

By fitting coincidence this entered the Top 10 30 years ago this week! It was on for a full house until the very last minute, and indeed most of you thought it would be the best guessed. But will something else have managed a full house?

Blur – Song 2

#2, 1997

One of the few songs that’s recognisable just from the opening drum beat, the follow up to the great “Beetlebum” was as well guessed as “Smells Like Teen Spirit”!

2pac – Until the end of time

#4, 2001

Like the vast majority of 2pac’s hits this did not emerge until well after his death, and was effectively a cover of “Broken Wings” by Mister Mister. Indeed some of you thought it was this track, and even though the 2 intros are different I, perhaps slightly generously, gave a couple of points for that.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama

#31, 1976

Amazingly this classic hit by surely the act with the longest vowelless name ever only ever reached #31, and then as a double A side. Nonetheless it’s far more well remembered than any of Elvis’s hits, as shown by how many of you got this.

Goo Goo Dolls – Iris

#3, 2011

This one was originally released way back in 1998 and had several minor chart runs, one as a double A side with “Stay With You”, but only hit the big time after an X Factor performance in 2011.

Well one of my carefully placed Gorillaz guesses was in the right place at least!

I knew I recognised #7 but would never have placed it as Smells Like Teen Spirit, my mind went to the 00s for some reason.

Oh I just thought it was the dodgy sound quality that meant Bohemian Rhapsody didn’t sound like normal

I don't think even I could manage to make Queen sound that warbly! :P
