I like seeing "Lose Your Head" in your top 10 of the year.

I've gotten quite into London Grammar this year - I know Lose Your Head well but don't think I've heard the CamelPhat remix! Giving it a listen now, sounding quite nice - I still prefer the original but this version complements it very nicely.

Ty for the comments :wub: The Camelphat Remix is the essential version for me by far but I did enjoy the original a lot to start off with too!

The highest-placing of all Kathaldazia BJSC entries of the year is this one which finished 17th in the contest. As the chart run suggests, I had been enjoying and considering it for a while and it shot up to #1 after I finally caved in to sending it for the last contest of the year.

 

It's a progressive breakbeat-style techno banger with lots of 90s-style rave elements. My favorite bit is the acid lines that ocurr around the halfway mark. The song is of course produced and performed by Estella who is Dutch. She directed the music video herself in which she appears wearing a pink wig. Later in the video, she snatches her own wig.

I feel like people had way too high expectations for this, and the song is a lot better than what people give it credit for. The "PRISONER PRISONER LAPTOP ON MY MIND" is a hook and a half. And who knew Dua could bring it with attitude like she did for this sub-genre and in the music video? #ProudOfDua

Bilingual record of the year "Fever" places at #5 on my 2021 EOY despite being a 2020 release. When will your faves? I feel like #5 is even too low for it. One of Dua's most underrated singles which deserved a global push. I was also properly obsessed with the Feder Remix.

 

The song tied "Hello" by Adele as the longest running number one single in the Wallonia region of Belgium (18 weeks at number one). It also became Dua's first #1 in France and reached the top 10 of charts in Hungary, Romania and Switzerland.

Dua domination continues with the final single from Future Nostalgia, "Love Again". It's another superb example of Dua going for a classic sound and making it work. She gives a gorgeous deep vocal performance on this which is one of the more deeper emotive cuts from the album. The Horse Meat Disco Remix from Club Future Nostalgia is also an essential *.*

 

Sadly, the single release campaign was a bit of a shambles from the get-go with the clown cover art, no TV promotion, Radio 1 snubbing it, not releasing a single edit on Spotify and then Hot Hits not properly getting behind it. As a result, the song got lumbered with a grossly undeserved UK chart peak of #51 :cry:

Looking back at the thread for this in Buzzjack's Dua forum, I was one of few posters who properly loved this from the get-go and I'm really happy with how much attention and success it has since received. Hey Kath- my favourites of the Top 20 so far are definitely Sofia Kourtesis <3 and SWIM. Both solid BJSC discoveries pour moi.

 

Triple Dua in the Top 5 already, you really are the premier Dua fan!

So many tunes here especially your goddess Dua! Was a bit unsure of 'Cold Heart' initially but it's actually a very cleverly put together piece. Who knew two completely random dare I say Elton songs would work so well as a mash up and Dua of course being the best of all on it *.*

 

'Compass' is a tune of life as well

No Missions was one of my big faves of your entries this year and I also enjoyed Open Air, Stand By Me and Getting Late a fair bit.

Lose Your Head (Remix) was rather good too although I preferred Baby It's You and How Does It Feel (Remix).

Dua Lipa did have a great year so not surprised at the top end domination here, Cold Heart particularly was brilliant.

Four Dua Lipa songs in a row! I did quite enjoy Cold Heart, the novelty of Elton John getting a UK #1 in 2021 was something to behold! (of course ignoring the fact he then got two more...)

2 Dua Lipa - We're Good

I infamously was not a fan of this at all to begin with, as shown by it initially limping in at #43 before dropping out. But it grew on me like a rash. It was perfect for summer here. I love how the upbeat vibe contrasts with the less upbeat lyrics. Dua's vocal performance is just *chef's kiss* The Dillon Francis Remix is a must-listen for those who aren't a fan of the midtempo pace.

 

An incredible lead single from the deluxe album that both creatively and sonically pushes boundaries of what people expect from Dua :clap:

I'm sure most people following could have guessed this as my #1 :lol: What a song and what an experience it has been following it's progress on the charts since the release in October 2020. It's no doubt Dua's biggest US hit till date and who could forget my semi-viral meltdowns during Billboard-gate when it was cheated out of the #1 spot

 

Her live performances of this were so on-point (see below AMAs performance for example). The styling in the video. If I had one criticism it would be the choreo during Graham Norton and certain other live renditions but otherwise as flaw-free as you can get, and up there with 'Don't Start Now' and 'Physical' as my Dua holy trinity :heart:

A Dua top 6 :cheeseblock: it's been so fun watching Levitating smash again and again! Love Again and Fever definitely deserved better in the UK so I'm glad they got justice here at least.

Okay 6 Dua Lipa songs in a row :lol: I do quite like Levitating, it took me quite a while to get into it compared to Don't Start Now/Break My Heart but it is very funky and probably my favourite of the ones in the chart this year. Thanks for posting Kath, I've enjoyed following along!

She is probably the best and most consistent popstar over the last five years I think so I really can't argue with it. Levitating, Cold Heart and Love Again are all wonderful, and We're Good really was slept on massively, whoops at me correctly guessing its No.25 UK peak, it deserved way better than that. I guess 12 weeks in the top 40 is quite good considering. I did actually really like it straight away myself!

 

Dua aside there's lots of other great stuff here, I liked the majority of your BJSC entries this year. Always great to hear stuff from South Africa that I'd never come across otherwise of course!
