Thanks for sharing Jester - have enjoyed reading your thoughts and perspectives, and I've also made a few great discoveries too.

“Common People” is one of my favourites also, the definitive single of the Britpop era - in my opinion it belongs in the 'god tier' of songs like “'Heroes'”, I know all of the lyrics by heart and I love every second of it. Was gutted when it stalled at #2 behind Robson and Jerome- I remember listening to that chart and it must have been a holiday or half-term or something because we were at my Nan's house, and I distinctly remember her saying she'd bought the Robson and Jerome single.. grr.

Well deserved no.1 certainly one of the best songs of the 90s!

Common People is a masterpiece

The songwriting and storytelling is superb

A million miles better than Oasis or Blur in the lyrics department

Really cannot compare

After giving it some thought my top 10 Britpop would

1 Pulp -Common people

2 Oasis - Don’t look back in anger

3 Oasis - Live forever

4 Manic Street Preachers - A design for life

5 The Verve -The drugs don’t work

6 Pulp - Disco 2000

7 Lush - Ladykillers

8 Suede - Beautiful ones

9 Blur - Girls and Boys

10 Ocean Colour Scene - The day we caught the train

Common People is the perfect song to top this countdown - it epitomised Britpop as a genre, but the music and message are timelessly powerful.

Can't argue with that #1! Just such a classic.

Thank you so much for this thread. I've enjoyed going over some of my favourites, rediscovering some gems and even making a few new discoveries along the way!

Fantastic top 5  Common People, Bittersweet Symphony, Don't Look Back in Anger & Alright are all classics which I can't really say a lot new about, but I didn't discover To The End until I listened to Parklife and it was an easy highlight, love the strings and dramatic feel of it, wish it had been a bigger hit :'(
Thanks for the countdown Jester! Can’t argue with the #1 and there were loads of classics along the way but also quite a bit to discover that I didn’t know.
