Glad positions nabbed an EOY position in at least one year... got really unlucky with timing last year (though it's not the biggest multi-week #1 we've seen in recent times I guess)

Positions and Confetti are sounding decent today though I was never big fans of them.

Is a bit lol that Positions made this EOY and not last year's but that's streaming for you.

Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hardheaded, very curious.”

It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts, and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music

It was #92 in the YE charts in 1988

Thanks - #94 here a slight flop by comparison then

Good to see 'positions' shake off the tag of longest running #1 to miss all EOY top 100s. I guess Merry Christmas takes that over...

Glad Positions made it after just missing last year, but its sales are pretty low for a 6 week No 1.

Good Days is gorgeous; shame it didn’t make the Top 10 but it doesn’t feel very commercial.

Biography

Cardi B’s come-up reads like a 2010s Cinderella story. In just a handful of years, the sharp-tongued New Yorker went from viral Instagram phenom to one of hip-hop’s most exciting voices, establishing herself as a bossed-up feminist icon along the way. Born Belcalis Almanzar in the South Bronx in 1992, Cardi got a job as a stripper at 19, quickly building a social media following—in addition to her devotees at the club—for her viral videos and hilarious catchphrases. In 2015, she scored a spot on VH1’s drama-filled reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York, where her brash personality turned her into an immediate fan favourite among her more established costars. That same over-the-top charisma made Cardi a natural fit for rap dominance; witty, unfiltered and totally fearless, her early tracks doubled as mantras for self-made women who put themselves first. But it was “Bodak Yellow” that launched Cardi into superstardom; a trap anthem that rang out from cars and clubs throughout 2017, it begging you to shout along. Her 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy, fused the Latin music of her childhood with hardcore New York hustlers' anthems, and squashed any doubts as to whether Cardi was here to stay. Meanwhile, her scene-stealing guest verses span the pop charts, from Bruno Mars (“Finesse [Remix]”) to Ozuna (“La Modelo”) to Maroon 5 (“Girls Like You”). Not bad for a self-proclaimed regular girl from The Bronx. - Apple Music

Can't tune in to this but I'll be around to throw in a dumb comment here and there x

Good Days is great, shows how big SZA is that she's able to get a hit with a non-commercial song like this

Unpopular opinion I'm sure but I sooo prefer Up over WAP! Crazy that it only peaked at #16. I just saw a headline that Cardi's finally releasing another album this year...

Biography

Shepherd's Bush-based Central Cee made his first steps in music toward the end of the 2010s, debuting with 2017's Auto-Tune-laced "Over You." His early career was characterized by the D-Block Europe-esque melodic trap of the era, with Cee opting for bouncy instrumentals and Auto-Tune-driven melodies on tracks like "TRANSITION" and "JUGG." However, in 2020 the rapper found himself drawn to a different style entirely -- U.K. drill. Kicking off the year with the guitar-laden "Day in the Life," Cee's skating flows proved a natural match for the genre's faster-paced sonics, which he continued to develop with the gritty "Molly" and a bold showing on Kenny Allstar's Mad About Bars. All prior successes were eclipsed in October of that year, though, when Cee released his breakout hit, "Loading." Landing at number 19 on the U.K. charts, the track secured the rapper his first Top 40 hit with its inventive drill production, active flows, and a magnetic performance on the mic. This success followed him into early 2021: January's "Pinging (6 Figures)" offered a more traditional take on drill, while February's "Commitment Issues" secured Cee a number nine spot on the U.K. charts. His debut mixtape, Wild West, arrived that March. Debuting at number two in the U.K., the tape expanded Cee's vivid drill sound with forward-thinking production and a wider range of narratives. - Apple Music

Biography

Some call the end of summer the “slow news season”—school's still out, holidays are in full swing, and headlines tend to get weird—and Doja Cat (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini in 1995) knew just what to do about it. In August of 2018, the Los Angeles singer and rapper dropped “Mooo!”, a sultry R&B jam, thick with double entendres and sung from the perspective of a cow. It went viral, thanks to an unforgettable, improbably catchy chorus that had people wondering: Could she possibly be for real? But Doja, who released her debut EP, Purrr!, in 2014, and her first album, Amala, in 2018, was no novelty act. In the years since, she has proven herself one of pop music’s savviest, most audacious characters. She raps nimbly, switching up her cadence from one syllable to the next, and her pop-culture nods (referencing actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry or sampling blink-182 and Paul Anka) are just as unpredictable as her dizzying flow. Her presentation is both tough and coquettish. As she demonstrated over and over on her 2019 album, Hot Pink, she assumes a fun and fundamentally empowered stance in her singing and rapping about sex. And woe to anyone who might take issue with that: “Sex is meaningful, it is!” she told Apple Music, with her trademark defiant charm. - Apple Music

Biography

Australian indie folk singer/songwriter Vance Joy began his career playing the Melbourne open-mike scene at the end of the 2000s while completing his law degree. Finding success with his intimate Bon Iver-influenced songs, Joy decided to put law on hold and pursue a music career instead. Born James Keogh, the singer took the name Vance Joy from a character in Peter Carey's novel Bliss in order to better separate his personal and professional life. As his reputation grew, he began working with a manager, booking bigger shows around town, and eventually recording his debut EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing. His catchy folk-pop single "Riptide" was an immediate success in Australia, and eventually led him to sign a lengthy multi-album deal with Atlantic Records. In 2013, Joy began touring internationally and recording his first album for Atlantic. His debut, Dream Your Life Away, arrived in September 2014. The following year Joy picked up the Best Male Artist gong at the ARIA Music Awards. Returning to the studio in 2017, he set about recording his sophomore album. Charting the life cycle of relationships from start to finish, the resulting album, Nation of Two, was released in early 2018. - iTunes

Biography

Staten Island native CJ made his commercial breakthrough in 2020 with the drill track "Whoopty," a Top 40 pop hit. Christopher Daniel Soriano started rapping in his teens and was uploading music under his stage name before he turned 20. He gained some attention in 2018 with "Pop," featuring 6ix9ine, and made another advancement in 2019 with the more melodic "Understood." "Whoopty," inspired by Brooklyn drill -- more specifically that scene's Pop Smoke -- followed in 2020. Originally released independently, it was picked up by major-label Warner Bros. and reached the Billboard Hot 100 that November. The track eventually cracked the Top 40 and became a global hit, a Top Ten entry in the U.K. and Belgium. CJ also made a high-profile guest appearance in 2020 on a remix of Busta Rhymes' "Czar," also featuring M.O.P. - Apple Music
